阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

A debate is spreading in Britain, from the far southern England to the northeast Scotland. The hunt is on to find a motto that sums up the nation in five words.

However, there is a small problem. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not, in fact, one nation. Britain is a union, and finding a national motto that combines that union is an almost impossible task.

What bright person dreamed up this hunt for a motto? British Prime Minister Gordon Brown started the debate: he suggested is as part of a public discussion to determine “the ideals and principles that combine us together as a nation”.

Newspapers couldn’t wait to get the game started. So they asked website readers to submit their own opinions.

Some of the best included “No motto please, we’re British” and “Mathematically, we could still qualify”, a reference to the England football team’s recent surprising performances in the European championship qualifiers.

The first of these won a Times Online poll. Y ou may wonder what it really means. The

suggestion is that British people don’t like to make a fuss. They would rather not go to the trouble of having a motto.

However, it also suggests that Britain is a place with an established historical and cultural heritage: “We don’t need a motto to sum us up, we know who we are, we have done quite well without one for over 2,000 years, thanks.”

The second shows British people’s ability to make fun of themselves. The England team’s failure to qualify angered a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make a joke about it.

The press treated the motto ideas so unkindly that it was abandoned. Y et the debate it set off, while mainly lighthearted, also has a serious side. Britain is worried it is losing its cultural identity. A large number of people arrived in Britain after World War II. The immigrants have a different sense of identity.

The question is: how can we redefine Britain to include these people, and make them feel included? This will have to involve serious changing the way communities work and the government operates. People will really have to feel like they can make a difference. Muttering(念叨) a motto every now and again is not going to make that happen.

61. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. how the UK hunts for a national motto

B. how the British people react to finding the national motto

C. how media promote the finding of the national motto

D. how a debate about finding a national motto failed

62. By saying “No motto please, we’re British”, the website readers mean that _______.

A. there should be some ideals and principles to tie them together

B. they would rather not go to the trouble of having a motto

C. the England football team didn’t give a surprising performance without the motto

D. the British motto is losing its cultural identity

63. We can infer that the people who said “Mathematically, we could still qualify” are ______.

A. serious

B. bitter

C. pleased

D. humorous

64. The writer seems to think that _______.

A. the motto will help the immigrants to develop their sense of belonging

B. the way communities work will make a difference to the motto

C. muttering a motto can’t guarantee that people feel included

D. a motto can sum the UK up and help people know who they are

B

Asking your parents for more money is very like arranging an overdraft( 透支). Y ou start with phone calls, follow up with letters, and, if those don't work, you're going to need a face-to-face visit.

Both banks and parents think in terms of interest rates. For banks this means getting back more than they lend. For parents it means getting back at the end of a course someone more interesting than the teenager who started it. So parents are likely to be most generous when you

show enthusiasm for your course and career prospects.

Both banks and parents will want to know details of your lifestyle to be sure you are spending their money wisely. train tickets, book tokens and even Tesco voucher(发票)can be useful, for they are not acceptable at most club nights.

Parents particularly like giving money for items essential for your course, and if they can be persuaded that you are thinking about costs. They will be impressed if you tell them the price of secondhand textbooks - less impressed if you've found the best value Happy Hour.

If you phone home to ask for money, make sure it isn't the first call you make. Y ou should have already called a couple of times to let them know you have arrived safely and have gone to at least one lecture. It doesn't count if all these calls are made on the same day.

It is hard to know which are more difficult to handle: parents who believe you are only after their money, or parents who think you really care. With the first, you have to ask lots of questions about their new greenhouse and other people's grandchildren to prove you really care about them, as well as their cash. With the second, you have to turn the conversation away from their new greenhouse and on to business.

Letters are an excellent way of persuading parents to part with money because they get to keep something in return. Give lots of chatty news and the unusual detail of things you can't do due to lack of funds. Do this well enough and you won't even need to enclose a pre-paid reply envelope.

Finally, you may need to arrange a visit. If they come to see you (you can't afford the fare home, remember) serve them a carefully presented meal of cheap beans on toast and the cheapest bottle of wine you can find. This shows you are making an effort on no resources. Make sure they leave hungry.

During lunch, casually mention that your flatmate's grades have really improved since his parents gave him an iPhone. Y ou could also mention that you spotted recently for a well-paid job as a pole-dancer, which would fit perfectly around your coursework.

65. Through the passage the author intends to _______.

A. teach some skills to the students about how to deal with their parents

B. give suggestions to the students about how to make communication with their parents

C. offer guidance to the students on how to treat their parents outside their home

D. give advice to the students on how to ask their parents for money

66. It can be inferred that your parents will be generous about giving you money ________.

A. if you hide train tickets, book tokens and Tesco vouchers

B. if you spent money at most night clubs

C. when you show enthusiasm for your course and career prospects

D. if you’ve found the best value Happy Hour

67. If your parents believe that you are only after their money, you should _______.

A. ask many questions about their new greenhouse and other people's grandchildren

B. turn the conversation away from their new greenhouse and on to business

C. prove you really care about their cash as well as their happy arriving

D. persuade them to part with money by giving them something to keep

68. According to the writer, during your parents’ visit, you should serve them with cheap beans and the cheapest bottle of wine to ________.

A. make them a deep impression on common school life

B. make sure they leave feeling hungry

C. make them listen to your talking about school news

D. make them notice your improvements ad efforts

C

A quick look at the lengths of children's index and ring fingers can be used to predict how well students will perform in education tests, new research claims.

Kids with longer ring fingers compared to index fingers are likely to have higher math scores than literacy or oral scores on the college entrance exam, while children with the reverse finger-length are likely to have higher reading and writing, or oral, scores versus math scores.

Scientists have known that different levels of the hormones testosterone (雄性激素) and estrogen (雌性激素) account for the different finger lengths, which are a reflection of areas of the brain that are more highly developed than others, said psychologist Mark Brosnan of the University of Bath, who led the study.

Exposure to testosterone is said to promote development of areas of the brain often associated with mathematical skills, he said. That hormone makes the ring finger longer. Estrogen exposure does the same for areas of the brain associated with oral ability and tends to lengthen the index finger relative to the ring finger.

To test the link to children's scores on the College Board's Scholastic Assessment Test, Brosnan and his colleagues made photocopies of children's palms and measured the length of their index and ring fingers. They used the finger-length rates as a standard for the levels of testosterone and estrogen exposure.

The researchers then looked at boys' and girls' test performances separately and compared them to finger-length rate measurements. They found a clear link between high testosterone exposure, indicated by the longer index finger compared to the ring finger, and higher scores on the math SA T.

Similarly, they found higher literacy SA T scores for the girls among those who had lower testosterone exposure, as indicated by a shorter ring finger compared with the index finger. 691. It’s likely that if a Chinese child with a longer index finger than his ring finger, he will probably get good marks in ______.

A. math

B. physics

C. chemistry

D. Chinese

B. Testosterone.

C. V itamin.

D. V egetables.

72. Which of the following statements is NOT correct in the passage?

A. A child with a longer index finger than his ring finger will fail in the math exam.

B. Girls with shorter ring fingers get higher literacy SA T scores.

C. Kids with longer ring fingers are likely to have higher math scores.

D. The length of the finger has something to do with hormones.

THE FOOD crisis is spreading fast. Politicians worldwide are facing the anger of voters, and the potential for social unrest. But there seems to be no quick fix to the problem.

Over the weekend, Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, sent further waves. "One thing is certain, the world has consumed more grain than it has produced" in the past three years.

Statistics from the US Department of Agriculture show that since 2000, the only year that humans produced enough to eat was in 2004. In 2007, for example, the world produced 2,075 million tons of grain, but consumed 2,098. The short supply, a result of climate change and the development of bio-fuels, has led to the price hike of grains and social unrest in 30 countries worldwide. "Supply and demand have become unbalanced, and... can't be fixed quic kly."said Ali Ghurkan, a UN Food and Agriculture Organization analyst.

Currently, the gap between supply and demand is being closed by eating into food stocks accumulated in better times. The world's food stocks have fallen by half since 1999, from a reserve big enough to feed the entire world for 116 days then to a predicted low of only 54 days by 2007, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

The miracle that has fed people from 1950 to the 1990s was the Green Revolution: higher-yielding crops that enabled humans to produce almost three times as much world food production during the four decades while increasing the area of farmland by no more than 10 percent. Meanwhile, the global population more than doubled in that time. But since the beginning of the 1990s, crop yields have essentially stopped rising.

A new world policy on food was proposed by World Bank President Robert Zoellick to tackle the crisis. "This new deal should focus not only on hunger and malnutrition, access to food and its supply, but also on the interconnections with energy, yields, climate change and investment," said Zoellick. "We can't be satisfied with studies and paper and talk. This is about recognizing a growing emergency, acting and seizing opportunity, too."

73. The underlined word “ tackle” in the passage probably means ______

A. concern

B. solve

C. face

D. accept

74. The best title of the passage would be_______.

A. New policy on food crisis

B. World food reserve

C. US food crisis

D. World food crisis

75. According to the passage, the factors related to the food crisis include_________.

a. the decreased reserve

b. energy

c. social unrest

d. climate change

e. crop production

f. the increasing population

g. investment

h. waste of food

A. a,b,d,e,f,g

B.a,b,d,c,f,h

C.a,b,d,h,f,e

76. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the crisis?

A. Optimistic.

B. Pessimistic.

C. Not clear.

D. Neutral.

A new study has found that it may be possible to train people to be more intelligent, increasing the brainpower they had at birth.

Until now, it has been widely assumed that the kind of mental ability that allows us to solve new problems without having any relevant previous experience — what psychologists call fluid intelligence — is innate and cannot be taught (though people can raise their grades on tests of it by practicing).

But in the new study, researchers describe a method for improving this skill, along with experiments to prove it works.

The key, researchers found, was carefully structured training in working memory —the kind that allows memorization of a telephone number just long enough to dial it. This type of memory is closely related to fluid intelligence, so the researchers reasoned that improving it might lead to improvements in fluid intelligence.

First they measured the fluid intelligence of four groups of volunteers using standard tests. Then they trained each in a complicated memory task-- the child’s card game, in whi ch they had to recall a card they saw and heard. During the course, they needed to ignore irrelevant items, monitor ongoing performance, manage two tasks at the same time and connect related items to one another in space and time.

The four groups experienced a half-hour of training daily for 8, 12, 17 and 19 days, respectively. To make sure they were not just improving their test-taking skills, the researchers compared them with control groups that took the tests without the training.

The results, published Monday in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, were striking. Improvement in the trained groups was a lot greater. Moreover, the longer they trained, the higher their scores were. All performers, from the weakest to the strongest, showed significant improvement.

“Our results show you can increase your intelligence with proper training.” said Dr Jaeggi, a co-author of the paper. No one knows how long the gains will last after training stops, he added, and the experiment’s design did not allo w the researchers to determine whether more training would continue to produce further gains.

77. The researchers thought the key to improving the intelligence was______.

A. memorizing telephone numbers

B. improving working memory

C. training in concentration

D. recalling a card

78. The following aspects of the training help increase intelligence Except_______.

A. ignoring irrelevant items

B. monitoring ongoing performance

C. managing two tasks at the same time

D. using previous experience

79. When the experiment was conducted , the researchers ______.

A. trained the four groups for the same period of time

B. only made comparisons between the four groups

C. compared the four groups with control groups

D. trained the four groups together

80. By writing the article, the writer intends to_____.

A. inform the readers of a new study

B. call on people to be trained to increase intelligence

C. prove one’s born brainpower can be improved

D. tell people the improved intelligence will last forever
