II. Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are 10 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the

Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people. MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Started two years ago, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.

Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’ worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.

For teenagers, it is a reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information.

“MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don’t have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in tough with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,” said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Parents on the other hand are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace.

“Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace,”said Kent Cates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars(研讨会). The national Center for Missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace-related complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburgh.

“Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web. And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It’s like a free checklist for trouble-makers and it endangers children,” Buchanan said.

1. From the passage, we can learn that MySpace ___________.

A. brings about the generation gap

B. is very careful about people’s privacy

C. encourages you to list your personal information

D. lists the telephone numbers of your friends

2. Why are some parents against MySpace?

A. Because they think MySpace has a bad influence on their children.

B. Because they don’t want to pay so much money for MySpace.

C. Because it takes up too much of their children’s spare time.

D. Because troublemakers can easily approach their children through the site.

3. What can we infer from “Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace.”?

A. MySpace has become a top issue troubling parents.

B. MySpace often holds parents meetings.

C. MySpace is quite popular with parents.

D. Parents have lots of questions about the website.

4. The writer’s attitude towards MySpace is ___________.

A. pessimistic

B. positive

C. optimistic

D. objective

5. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Internet Safety.

B. MySpace.

C. Generation Gap.

D. The Digital Era.

Passage Two

In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the earth’s postwar era, there was quite a wide-spread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons may be pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction (失误).

Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong.

Questioning and routine double-checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

1. What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To look back to the early days of computers.

B. To explain what technical problems may occur with computers.

C. To discourage unnecessary investment in computers.

D. To warn against a mentally lazy attitude towards computers.

2. According to the passage, the initial concern about computers was that they might ________.

A. change our personal lives

B. take control of the world

C. create unforeseen problems

D. affect our businesses

3. The passage recommends those dealing with computers to ________.

A. be reasonably doubtful about them

B. check all their answers

C. substitute them for basic thinking

D. use them for business purposes only

4. The passage suggests that the present-day problem with regard to computers is ________.

A. challenging

B. psychological

C. dramatic

D. fundamental

5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author would disapprove of ________.

A. investment in computers

B. the use o f one’s internal computer

C. double-check on computers

D. complete dependence on computers for decision-making

Passage Three

We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把…按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it

can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

C. offer advice on the proper use of the library

D. emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teaching

Passage 4 AABAD

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon become engrossed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A

bookshop is very much like a music shop. You can wander round such places to your heart’s content. It is a good shop: no assista nt will approach you with the evitable greeting. “Can I help you?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.

Once a medical student had to read a text-book which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn’t obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a certain bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop beckoning to him. Expecting to be told off, he went towards him. Passage 6 DBBDA

One of our biggest social cripples (缺陷) is the fear of not measuring up. Perhaps you feel you won’t impress others becau se they are more confident, successful, intelligent or attractive than you are. Such thinking is wrong-headed. The secret of doing well with others is accepting yourself.

When I was a college student, I kept a journal filled with private memories. Some were painful memories from childhood when I felt hurt, confused, lonely and insecure. I described fragments (片断) of dreams and intensely personal feelings of anger and hatred, as well as things I

enjoyed such as magic stories and coin shops.

Then a terrible thing happened. After dinner one night I realized that I had left my journal in coatroom outside the campus dining hall. Terrified that somebody might read it and find out the truth about me, I raced back, only to discover that it was gone.

Weeks passed, and eventually I gave up hope of finding it again. A month later, I was hanging up my jacket in the same place when I saw my brown, tattered (破烂的) journal, just where I’d left it. Nervously I flipped through the pages and found that a stranger had written this entry: “God bless you. I am a lot like you, only I don’t keep a diary, and I’m grateful to know there are others like me. I hope things t urn out well for you.”

Tears came to my eyes. It had never crossed my mind that anyone could know my inner feelings and still care about me.

No matter what you’re like —whether you’re rich or poor, insecure or outgoing, brilliant or average, attractive or plain —some people like you and others couldn’t care less. Nobody gets accepted by everyone. But far more people will be attracted to you if you accept yourself.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced plans to return people to the moon by 2018. “And this time,” according to a NASA press release, “we’re going to stay.”

NASA wants to make a new spaceship for the missions using parts from the Apollo program,

which first took people to the moon in 1969, and the space shuttle. NASA says the new Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) will be “affordable, reliable, and sage.”

The CEV will be able to hold four astronauts. The plan is to have the CEV dock (对接) in space with the lunar lander — the vehicle astronauts will use to land on the moon — which will be launched separately into space. The CEV will then travel to the moon and all four astronauts will walk on the moon.

The first moon missions are expected to last up to seven days. Exploration and construction of a moon base will be the astronauts’ top priorities(最优先考虑的事). NASA hopes to have a minimum of two moon missions a year starting in 2018. This will allow for quick moon base construction, constant scientific study, and training for future missions to Mars.

B. speed up the moon base construction and other activities

C. guarantee the quality of the researchers’ scientific study

D. set up new training laboratories for future missions to Mars

Passage 8

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to m ake his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught—to walk, run,

climb, whistle, ride a bicycle—compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essent ial, they will go out into the world and learn it.

1. What does the author think is the best way for children to learn things?

A. By copying what other people do.

B. By asking a great many questions.

C. By listening to explanations from skilled people.

D. By making mistakes and correcting them.

2. What does the author think teachers do which they should not do?

A. They give children correct answers.

B. They point out children’s mistakes to them.

C. They allow children to mark their own work.

D. They encourage children to copy from one another.

3. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bike are________.

A. not really important skills

B. basically the same as learning other skills

C. basically different from learning other skills

D. more important than other skills

4. Exams, grades and marks should be thrown away because children’s progress should only be

estimated by _______.

A. educated persons

B. parents

C. teachers

D. the children themselves

5. The author fears that children will grow up into adults who are ______.

A. too independent of others

B. unable to think for themselves

C. too dependent on others

D. unable to use basic skills

Passage 9

Teaching involves more than leadership. Some of the teacher’s time and effort is direc ted toward instruction, some toward evaluation. But it is the teacher as a group leader who creates an efficient organizational structure and good working environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. A group that is totally disorganized, unclear about its goals, or constantly fighting among its members will not be a good learning group. The leadership pattern includes helping to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place.

On the first day of class, the teacher faces a room filled with individuals. Perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity, no set of rules for conduct in the group, no feeling of belonging. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships that encourages cooperation.

Standards and rules must be established that maintain order, ensure justice, and protect individual rights, but do not contradict school policy. What happens when one student hurts another’s individual rights? Without clear guidelines mutually agreeable to students, teachers, and administration, the classroom can become chaotic(混乱的). Students may break rules they did not know existed. If standards are set without input from the class, students may spend a great deal of creative energy in ruining the class environment, finding ways to break rules.

No matter how skillful the teacher is in uniting students and establishing a positive atmosphere, the task is never complete. Regular maintenance is necessary. Conflicts arise. The needs of individual members change. A new kind of learning task requires a new organizational structure. Sometimes outside pressure such as holidays, upcoming tests or athletic contests, or family troubles cause stress in the classroom. One task for the teacher is to restore a positive environment by helping students cope with conflict, change, and stress.

1. This article is written mainly for the purpose of ______.

A. providing information for teaching

B. studying the teacher’s behavior in the classroom

C. comparing the teacher’s behavior with students’

D. teaching and organizing a class

2. The teacher, to some extent, is a leader because _______.

A. he should develop harmony among students

B. he deals with students in the same way as a leader deals with people

C. he is responsible for a well-organized class and a good learning environment

D. he has to maintain order and give instruction and evaluation

3. The teacher should do more than teach. It is his responsibility to ______.

A. create an organizational structure and a positive learning structure

B. establish standards and rules students should follow

C. help students deal with conflict, change, and stress

D. all of the above

4. The following statements are true of the standards and rules to be established EXCEPT ______.

A. the standards and rules should maintain order

Passage 10

Every country has its heroes. They may be soldiers or sports people, doctors or film stars. We admire them for their courage, their strength, their devotion to duty or their talent. Their example inspires us to live better, to work harder.

Terry Fox was a young student who loved life and who loved sports. When he was just 18 years old a terrible tragedy occurred: his right leg had to be cut off because of cancer. Such an experience would have destroyed a weaker person —but Terry Fox was a fighter. He refused to give up. Instead, while he was recovering from the operation, an idea slowly formed in his mind. He decided he would run across Canada —in order to raise money for cancer research.

Slowly and carefully, he began to train. Every step was extremely painful, but he insisted, increasing the distance covered day by day. Sixteen months later, in the spring of 1980, he was ready for the long journey across Canada —his Marathon of Hope. It was a time of inspiration and heartbreaking emotion. Through television, every home saw his distinctive style of running —a kind of half-hop and half-run. Thousands of people lined the route to encourage him and to wish him well. They also gave money to fight cancer. Then, on September the 1st 1980, after 143 days and more than 5000 kilometers completed, everything came tragically to an end. Terry had to stop.
