I went with some friends from my office for a dinner in a very popular local restaurant. It was

regular business time and the restaurant was crowded. We 75 found a table in a corner for three after waiting for an hour.

As soon as we sat down, we heard a loud noise when a young writer hit

the floor with all the plates he was carrying. There was 76 _ and no

one was saying or doing anything.

In a flash, I remembered my experience many years ago. Once, I fell

down on the ground in the airport because I had rushed to the airport on my

own on an empty. I was picked up and looked after by two 77 . This was my chance to pay it forward.

I ran t o the young man’s side. I turned him on his back and shouted for someone to bring a hot drink. Soon people started asking if I was a doctor. I said I was not, but I was skillful at blacking out (晕厥).

The kid soon opened his eyes and started saying that he didn’t know what had happened. I comforted him by saying it was OK and I had a 78 experience. He had not eaten. I held the warm drink to his mouth till he finished it and sat with him till he felt OK. By then the 79 had arrived.

I asked her to let the kid lie down for a little while until he was steady on his foot, and to give him something to eat. I offered to pay.

The lady was kind enough to refuse the payment and agreed to make sure the kid ate before he went home. By the time all this was over it was too late for my friends. We hadn’t ordered anything yet. so we decided to go home.

I slowly walked home, not hungry any more, and my heart was thankful for the opportunity to pay forward 80 I had received many years ago.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work on a group project with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work a (81)?

The Programme for International Students Assessment, or PISA,

carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups.

They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are

also likely to be better at working with other people.

Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test

scores are h (82), also did well in working together to solve problems. This finding was true for many countries.

But this was not true for every country. Chinese students, who also did well on test, s (83) just average collaborative(合作的)skills.

“Other r (84) might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades,”

said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association.“Students have a lot of exam pressure and they view school as a place for competition.”

“However, collaborative skills are very important for p (85) students for today’s society.”he added.“Luckily, more Chinese educators are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve this skill.”

Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls tend(趋向于)to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more active attitudes towards relationships, which means they are much e (86) to communicate with.

PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to e (87) students to collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class debates, students tend to have better attitude toward collaborating.

D. Answer the questions(根据以下内容回答问题)(12分)

A professor began his speech by holding up a glass with some water in it.

Then, he held it up for all to see, and asked the students.“How much do you think

this glass weight?”

“50g!”“100g!”“125g!”the students answered.

“I really can’t know unless I weigh it,”the professor said,“but my next question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?”

“Nothing.”the students said.

“Okay, What would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?”the professor asked.

“Your arm would begin to ache,”one of the students said.

“You are right. Now, what would happen if I held it for a day?”

“Your arm could go numb(麻木的). Your might have serious muscles stress, or paralysis(瘫痪)”. You would have to go to the hospital for sure!”another student said. All the students laughed.

“Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?”the professor asked.

“No,”the student said.

“Then why do we have different results?”

The students puzzled.

“It does not matter on the weigh itself. It depends on how long you hold it.”the professor said.

“It is exactly the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again.”

The problems in life are like this. If you just think about them for a few minutes, they might not seem so bad. Think about them for a longer time and they begin to ache. Hold them even longer and they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to d o anything. It’s important to think about challenges in your life, but it’s even more important to‘put them down’at the end of the day before you go to sleep. That way, maybe you will _____________ the next day.

C. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false (判断下列句子是否符合你听到的内容, 符合的用“T”表示,不符合的用“F”表示) (7分)'

Mr. and Mrs. Smith have three children. They are like many American and British parents. They take their children from one activity to another. After school, Mr. Smith takes the two boys from football .to basketball while Mrs. Smith has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don't get home until 7 p.m. They have a quick supper, and it's time for homework. So life for Mr. and Mrs. Smith's children is very busy every day.

Nowadays most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music and Maths classes. Parents seem to push their children a lot more. They see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.

Linda, a mother of three children in London tells us that in some families, competition starts from a very young 'age. Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It's crazy. People shouldn't push their kids so hard. Parents are trying to plan their kids' lives for them. In fact, parents should learn to give their kids more time to themselves. On the one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves.
