三.阅读理解(20*3)

Passage 1

A relationship is defined as a state of connectedness between people. Although in today‘s society with its crazy rhythm (节奏) of everyday life, when people tend to live in thickly populated cities, spending most of their time in the office and hardly knowing their neighbour’s name, we still find ourselves in some kinds of relationships-with friends, family, or colleagues.

Family relationships are the first relationships people enter. Parents and relatives influence our emotional development by creating a model that we are sometimes bound to follow all our lives, often subconsciously (潜意识地)。 In day-care, at school, then in the office we spend a lot of time among fellow students and co-workers. We learn to keep business relationships, to work in a team environment, then form smaller groups of like-minded people and finally select some of them as our friends.

What is a true friendship? How does it start? Are we destined (注定) to become friends with certain people or can we actually plan whom to be friends with?

“Everybody‘s friend is nobody’s.” said Arthur Schopenhauer. Unlike a companionship based on belonging to the same team or group, friendship is a very personal and selective type of relationship. It calls for trust, sincerity, and emotional bonds.

Sociologists believe that most people are looking for similarities in views, social status, and interests when choosing friends. No wonder that our friends are often people of the same age, sex,and education. Another important factor is joint activity and solidarity. This is the reason why many of us befriend our colleagues and other people who work in the same field.

Most people would agree that a friend is someone who always listens and understands. Understanding in this context implies a lot of meanings-compassion, sympathy, and emotional closeness. It‘s a process in which your friend reads your emotional state, shares your feelings, identifies himself or herself with you.

Passage2

Researchers found that compared with teens who spent much of their free time in front of TV sets, those who were physically active often had higher self-respect, better grades. and were less likely to have risky behavior like taking drugs, smoking, or drinking. The findings, based on a national survey of nearly 12,000 middle and high school students, were published in a journal.

“Across the board, children who were engaged in any kind of activity were better off than kids who watched a lot of TV,” said study co-author professor Penny Gordon - Larsen of University of North Carolina.

Other studies have linked certain content of television programs, such as violence and sex, to children‘s behavior. But beyond this issue, Gordon - Larsen said that kids who spend hours watching TV “miss opportunities” to develop skills, learn teamwork and have other experiences that their more active peers benefit form. That doesn‘t mean, however, that kids have to be on the football team. The study found that some activities like skating and skateboarding — which adults sometimes frown upon—were also related to better self-respect and less risk-taking. That skaters were better behaved than TV -watchers might come as a surprise to some adults who consider these teens to be bad, according to Gordon - Larsen. Skateboarding is forbidden in many public areas, and some communities oppose building skating parks. But if kids who like to skate have nowhere to do it,“it‘s a shame,”said Gordon-Larsen.

Not only should parents encourage their kids to engage in the physical activities they enjoy, she said, but schools and communities should also do more to create opportunities for children to be active.

Passage 3

If there is one thing I‘m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives - the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It‘s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic (基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do - as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It‘s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu; making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read - sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media (媒体)。 They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn‘t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures:on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

41. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Best Way to Get News

B. The Changes of Media

C. Make Your Own Newspaper

D. The Future of Newspaper

42. In the writer‘s opinion, in the future, ________.

A. more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news

B. newspapers will not be printed in publishing houses any longer

C. newspapers will cover more scientific research

D. more and more people will watch TV

43. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?

A. Sports and international news.

B. A menu of important news.

C. The most important news.

D. What you are interested in.

44. From the passage, we can infer ________.

A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media

B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media

C. television will take the place of newspaper

D. the writer believe some media will die out

45. The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means ________.

A. depend on

B. compete with

C. fight with

D. kill off

Passage 4

British Red Cross volunteer Philip Roberts showed how important basic first aid skills can be by saving a road crash victim‘s life.

Philip was driving down the M6 motorway early one morning when he came across a serious road accident.

A truck had crashed into a car, driving it off the motorway and into a roadside bank.

As the first person on the scene, Philip made sure it was safe to approach the vehicle and found an unconscious woman inside, slumped (陷入) forward and with her airway blocked. As another driver approached, he shouted for them to call the emergency services. Then Philip acted fast.

He recalls:“Climbing into the car, I immediately lifted the woman‘s head and opened her airway,so she would be able to breathe. I then kept my hands on her head to keep her neck steady, as the crash could have caused spinal (脊柱的) injury.”

“When the emergency services arrived, they asked me to stay inside the car and maintain(维持) the woman‘s airway while they cut off the roof of the car.” By the time the woman was freed from the vehicle, half an hour later, she was starting to regain consciousness.

Philip said,“The simple first aid techniques I used can be learned in five minutes, yet they probably saved the driver‘s life. Surely that’s a worthwhile way to spend five minutes!”

“It shows that you don‘t necessarily need a big first aid kit full of medical equipment-your hands are the best first aid tools you have.”

Thousands of people are killed on UK roads every year and over half of road accident deaths occur before the emergency services arrive. It can take less than four minutes for a blocked airway to cause death, while it takes around eight minutes for emergency services to arrive.

凯西国际英语高一英语测试卷Name: Score: A Passenger pigeons(旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks(群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reach its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons – a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant birds in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati. Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants. By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered(驱散)the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden in September 1, 1914. 24. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons _______. A. were the biggest bird in the world B. lived mainly in the south of America C. did great harm to the natural environment D. Were the largest population in the US 25.The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ _______.
