It was a dark, wet November morning. It seemed like it would take a million years to get to summer again. I thought bears have got it right---- what a perfect idea to sleep through the worst part of the year and wake up when spring comes!

―Want some words of affirmation(肯定)?‖ a coworker, seeing my mood, kindly suggested. ―You don’t think they would cheer you up?‖

―Today? No.‖ I shook my head.

―I used to think so too,‖he said, ―until I realized the effect my words had on a certain person. Well, it was someone I knew pretty well. I have to say I treated him rather badly.‖―You? But you are always so positive! How did you treat him badly?‖

―I told him I did not like anything about him, really. I told him I did not even like his name. In fact, it wasn’t only what I said. I also did pretty bad things to him. When he was hungry, I did not give him the chance to eat proper food. When he felt like doing something fun, I said to him that he was being childish and having fun was not productive And worst of all, when he was sick and needed care, I did not care. I told him to get up and get to work. And when he did, I never told him he did good work. You could say I was ashamed of him,‖ he said. ―I wanted to get rid of him because he just wasn’t good enough for me---but couldn’t.‖

―But that was heartless!‖

He nodded. ―Then one day it all changed. I stood there in front of the bathroom mirror one morning. I saw the dark circles under his eyes, I saw the excess (过量的) weight. I saw the hair that needed cutting. And I saw the eyes that once had looked at the world eagerly. Now they were so sad and tired. And there and then I realized he deserved better. So I told the man I had disliked for so many years that he was a good person after all.‖

My jaw (下巴) dropped. I looked at him---full of positive energy, in good shape, always ready to encourage others.

Edmonton's Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage for five days where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Since its beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating (纪念)the true

feeling of what folk music is all about and that’s the traditional togetherness (友爱)that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through song.

This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. ―People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation,‖ Riedel said. ―It’s really eas y to relax, and it’s great seeing family and friends have fun together.‖ These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.

With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue (举办地)for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.

The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it’s easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug.4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug.8.

The African elephant, which is the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

64. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Disappearance of African elephants.

B. The effect of African elephants’ search for food.

C. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.

D. The eating habit of African elephants.

65. What does the underlined phrase ―setting the terms‖ most probably mean?

A. Fixing the time.

B. Deciding the conditions.

C. Improving the quality.

D. Worsening the state.

66. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?

A. They result from the destruction of rain forests.

B. They provide food mainly for African elephants.

C. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.

D. They are home to many endangered animals.

67. The passage is developed mainly by ______.

A. giving examples

B. pointing out similarities and differences

C. describing the changes in space order

D. showing the effect and then explaining the causes

As we all know, different countries have different cultures. The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. 71

The origin of the eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are fostered by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. 72

Then in Tang Dynasty of China, the Chinese culture gradually went overseas to Japan, mixed into the Japanese society and shaped the Japanese culture nowadays. Though a bit different from

the Chinese one, it belongs to the same system.

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. 73 Like the Chinese culture, the European one also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t distinguish from the European one a lot.

74 Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race difference counts as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference (干扰) from the other.

The differences are everywhere. 75 But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.

A. Let us work together to keep a variety of culture.

B. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture.

C. One important thing is to learn about other cultures.

D. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.

E. They are obvious and affect people’s wa ys of thinking and their views of the world.

F. At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences.

G. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.

W: Tim always gets good grades on his projects. If you are truly dissatisfied, why don’t you speak to the teacher to find out why you only got a ―B‖?

M: I’m really not in the mood to speak to that teacher.

W: Maybe your grade can be changed. If that can’t be done, you can find out what was weak about it and try to improve on those points in you next project.

M: I suppose that’s the best thing to do.

(Text 9)

W: Mr. Brown, when did you get home last night?

M: At about nine o’clock.

W: What did you do right after you entered your apartment?

M: Well, I made a cup of coffee and then watched the international news on TV.

W: When did you have supper?

M: At about a quarter to ten, I guess.

W: Did you stay at home the whole evening?

M: Yes. I had a good sleep at home.

W: But your friend said that he called you several times between ten and eleven, but you didn’t answer.

M: Well,I think I was taking a shower at that time and didn’t he ar the calls.

W: No, you weren’t. You were not even at home last night. You robbed a jewelry store on Peace Street.

M: I’m sorry, madam. I’ll tell you the truth, but you must promise that I won’t be sent to prison. You know, my mother is sick and I have to look after her everyday.

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
