Robots make me nervous, especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. That’s what philosopher NickBostrom from the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University believes. He says thatmachines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of peoplemight be just collateral(附带的) damage. A machine would not take pity on you.

I’m glad my machines at home are ―dumb‖. All my vacuum cleaner wants to take over is thecarpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over theworld!

When I wake up on summer mornings, I know I am going to my favorite place to volunteerand make a difference in someone’s life just by being with him or her —a summer school forautistic (患孤独症的) children.

By helping the kids read or do math, I am not only teaching important skills but also helpingthem feel like any other kid. There are many wrong ideas about autism. The kids I work with canthink and feel. They need help only in certain areas. Of course, each kid is special. For example,some kids like to draw, and others like to sing.

Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you topredict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. Whenalcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant (抑制药), damaging

eyesight, judgment and co-ordination (协调), slowing down reaction time and greatly increasingthe risk of accidents. Even below the drink driving limit, driving will be affected.

Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on thebrain. Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinksmixed with fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is notpossible to speed it up with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee.

The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is:

● 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood; or

● 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath; or

● 67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine (尿液)

Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are beingsuspected of drink driving will be tested.

Any driver found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty maybe fined a maximum of HK$25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for10 driving-offence points; or temporarily banned from driving.

The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens (样本) for breath, blood orurine tests without good excuse.

Drink driving is a criminal offence. Be a responsible driver, think before you drink. For thesafety of yourself and other road users, never drive after consuming alcohol.

Butterflies are some of the most fascinating and beautiful insects in the world. Adultbutterflies will live about two to four weeks. They use their senses of sight, touch, hearing, smelland taste to survive in the world, find food and mates, lay eggs in a proper place, migrate andavoid hungry enemies.

Butterflies have large compound eyes (复眼), which allow them to see in all

directionswithout turning their heads. Like most insects, butterflies are very near-sighted, so they are more attracted to many flowers. Butterflies do not ―see‖ colors such as red, green and yellow, but theycan sense sunlight, which shows the direction in which the sun is shining, as well as ultravioletlight (紫外线), which is present on many flowers and guides butterflies to find honey sources.

Butterflies have a very well-developed sense of smell, but it is not in their nose, since theydon’t have one. Sense receptors (感受器) are in their antennae (触角), feet and many other parts ofthe body. They can help butterflies find their favorite flower honey, food and mates.

Butterflies’ feet have sense organs that can taste the sugar in flower honey, letting thebutterflies know if something is good to eat or not. Some females also carefully choose host plantsby tasting to find proper places to lay their eggs. Adult butterflies feed their babies using a longtube. Butterflies force blood into the tube to straighten it out, allowing them to feed. Butterflies getall their food from this tube.

Butterflies don’t have ears.Instead they ―hear‖ sounds through their wings by sensingchanges in sound vibrations.

Butterflies may possess senses we haven’t known about till today, because their bodystructure is very different and difficult to understand, when observed through our own humansenses.

M: Uh, well, madam, as you know, we were just closing. And perhaps, madam, if you come

One day last summer I was traveling on the London Underground, on the Piccadilly Line. We stopped at Green Park and a few people got on. Among them were an elderly lady and an elderly gentleman, maybe her husband. Actually, he didn’t quite get on the train because the automatic doors closed on him as he was getting on. I know from experience that this isn’t really a problem — you just push your arms out and the doors move back. However, this couple appeared to be unfamiliar with the underground and this man did the worst thing possible — he stepped back but somehow leaned forward. This meant that the doors closed on his neck so his head was inside the train and the rest of his body was outside. He had a most peculiar expression on his face and he was waving his arms up and down. His wife, who had found a seat, didn’t seem to be the least disturbed. I realized that there was a real danger that he might be dragged along the platform and seriously injured, so I leapt from my seat and, along with two other men, pulled at the doors, which soon sprang back. Nobody else did anything, apart from one person who said, ―Pull the communication button‖ but remained seated. The man took his seat next to his wife. They were both completely calm and didn’t say a word.
