superman

Today ,I’d like to introduce a superman to you .In the films ,he can fly high in the shy , lift up a big building easily. In real life,he's even like a superman. It's him, Christopher Reeve,a mythic man in the world.

First of all, I have to say, to our sadness, the great man had passed away because of illness in 2004.

Born in September 25th, 1952, in New York City,Christopher Reeve had accomplished great achivements in his lifetime.

(1) God's Been Good to Him A Overnight Success

He luckily and expectedly won the chance to act the heroic role “Superman”,and became a overnight success .At that time, the film became really a great hit, and he was famous with almost everyone in the US immediately.

He made Superman believable by playing him as a hero with brains and a heart. Reeve said, "What makes Superman a hero is not that he has power, but that he has the wisdom and the maturity to use the power wisely. From an acting point of view, that's how I approached the part."He is bound to be a super star.

But rather than limit himself to the heroic roles for which he seemed so well suited, Reeve frequently sought the challenge of parts that cast him against type--playing characters that were gay, As he said, "I has always preferred the stage, considering it an actor's greatest test".

In addition to being an actor, Reeve is also an active celebrity political activist and an accomplished pianist. no matter what he was doing at the time, Reeve invariably made every effort to do his best.

(2)The Joke Of Fate? Ten Years' Wheelchair Life

In May of 1995, while Reeve was horse riding ,his horse suddenly balked at a rail jump(在一个栏杆跳跃中退缩), pitching (甩出)his rider forward. Reeve's hands were tangled (纠缠)in the horse's bridle (缰绳)and he landed head first. As a result, Reeve was instantly paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the neck down and unable to breathe.

(3)The God Of Belief Bravely Get The Movie King (影帝)After Paralyzed (瘫痪的)

Even under his wife's good care, his condition puts him at constant risk for related illnesses-- pneumonia(肺炎), infections(感染病), blood clots (血凝块), wounds that do not heal, autonomic dysreflexia( 自主神经异常反射)--all of which Reeve would experience in the coming years.

But he was indeed a real-life superman.Less than one year after his injury, Reeve began to accept invitations for speaking engagements(约定). Traveling with a team of aides and nurses he has crisscrossed the country, speaking at universities, benefits, and at many functions relating to disability issues. However,Reeve in fact faced risk of embarrassment if he cannot speak because his tracheostomy(气管造口术)tube may be slightly out of position somehow.

Moreover,at the film “D isturbia”(后窗惊魂),he won the best actor for his wonderful performance, though he could not move at all except his

head .And he also directed the great film" In the Gloaming(黄昏)" on his own.

More importantly, he found the Paralysis Resource Center ( 瘫痪资源中心), a non-profit research organization, and used his fame to raise millions of dollars for research into spinal cord injuries(脊椎损伤)as well as stem cell research(干细胞研究), in the hopes of eventually curing paralysis and other illnesses such as diabetes and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease(糖尿病、早老年痴呆症和巴金森氏症).

In these activities as well as the rest of his life, Reeve sets obstacles for himself and then works to overcome them. He believes that progress in one's life comes from setting your own challenges and then doing the best you possibly can to succeed.

(4)The King of Terrors Called Him Then He Closed His Eyes Forever In 2004 ,he died on October 10 of heart failure(心脏功能衰竭), without realizing his dream of walking again.

With God's help, Reeve is Superman because:

1. He survived the horse riding accident and challenged himself physically during countless months of painful physical therapy(治疗).

2. He remained committed to his role as a loving husband and doting (溺爱的)father .

3. He kept hope alive in the face of injury and paralysis that can destroy all hope-in the face of having to depend on his wife and many others to

feed, wash, change, move and carry him .

Some think they should have a definite goal and detailed plan, so as to brace themselves for any challenges, whereas some others think they don't have to think much about the future, because future is full of uncertainties. 2. (tick away; make the best of; have a shot at) After a very careful check-up, the scientist was told he had got a fatal disease. We all sensed we were coming to the end of our stay here, that we would never get a chance like this again, and we became determined not to waste it. Most important of course were the final exams in April and May in the following year. No one wanted the humiliation of finishing last in class, so the peer group pressure to work hard was strong. Libraries which were once empty after five o'clock in the afternoon were standing room only until the early hours of the morning, and guys wore the bags under their eyes and their pale, sleepy faces with pride, like medals proving their diligence. 2. Tomorrow? It's all a lie; there isn't a tomorrow. There's only a promissory note that we are often not in a position to cash. It doesn't even exist. When you wake up in the morning it'll be today again and all the same rules will apply. Tomorrow is just another version of now, an empty field that will remain so unless we start planting some seeds. Your time, which is ticking away as we speak (at about 60 seconds a minute chronologically; a bit faster if you don't invest your time wisely), will be gone and you'll have nothing to show for it but regret and a rear-view mirror full of "could haves", "should haves" and "would haves". 1.

The people responsible are, presumably, the adults who have been running thing. If they can’ t do better than that, what have they got to teach our generation? That kind of lesson we can do without. There conclusions strike me as reasonable, at least from their point of view. The relevant question for the arriving generation is not whether our society is imperfect (we can take that for granted), but how to deal with it. For all its harshness and irrationality, it is the only world we’ ve got. Choosing a strategy to cope with it, then, is the first decision young adults have to make, and usually the most important decision of their lifetime. So far as I have been able to discover, there are only four basic alternatives:

“Hiroshima! Everybody off!” That must be what the man in the Japanese stationmaster's uniform shouted, as the fastest train in the world slipped to a stop in Hiroshima Station. I did not understand what he was saying. First of all, because he was shouting in Japanese. And secondly, because I had a lump in my throat and a lot of sad thoughts on my mind that had little to do with anything a Nippon railways official might say. The very act of stepping on this soil, in breathing this air of Hiroshima, was for me a far greater adventure than any trip or any reportorial assignment I'd previously taken. Was I not at the scene of the crime? The Japanese crowd did not appear to have the same preoccupations that I had. From the sidewalk outside the station, things seemed much the same as in other Japanese cities. Little girls and elderly ladies in kimonos rubbed shoulders with teenagers and women in western dress. Serious looking men spoke to one another as if they were oblivious of the crowds about them, and bobbed up and down re-heatedly in little bows, as they exchanged the ritual formula of gratitude and respect: "Tomo aligato gozayimas." Others were using little red telephones that hung on the facades of grocery stores and tobacco shops. "Hi! Hi!" said the cab driver, whose door popped open at the very sight of a traveler. "Hi", or something that sounds very much like it, means "yes". "Can you take me to City Hall?" He grinned at me in the rear-view mirror and repeated "Hi!" "Hi! ’ We set off at top speed throug h the narrow streets of Hiroshima. The tall buildings of the martyred city flashed by as we lurched from side to side in response to the driver's sharp twists of the wheel. Just as I was beginning to find the ride long, the taxi screeched to a halt, and the driver got out and went over to a policeman to ask the way. As in Tokyo, taxi drivers in Hiroshima often know little of their city, but to avoid loss of face before foreigners, will not admit their ignorance, and will accept any destination without concern for how long it may take them to find it. At last this intermezzo came to an end, and I found myself in front of the gigantic City Hall. The usher bowed deeply and heaved a long, almost musical sigh, when I showed him the invitation which the mayor had sent me in response to my request for an interview. "That is not here, sir," he said in English. "The mayor expects you tonight for dinner with other foreigners or, the restaurant boat. See? This is where it is.” He sketched a little map for me on the back of my invitation. Thanks to his map, I was able to find a taxi driver who could take me straight to the canal

Lesson Eleven On Getting off to Sleep谈睡眠 人真是充满矛盾啊! What a bundle of contradictions is a man! Surety, humour is the saving grace of us, for without it we should die of vexation. With me, nothing illustrates the contrariness of things better than the matter of sleep. If, for example, my intention is to write an essay, and 1 have before me ink and pens and several sheets of virgin paper, you may depend upon it that before I have gone very far I feel an overpowering desire for sleep, no matter what time of the day it is. I stare at the reproachfully blank paper until sights and sounds become dim and confused, and it is only by an effort of will that I can continue at all. Even then, I proceed half-heartedly, in a kind of dream. But let me be between the sheets at a late hour, and I can do any-thing but sleep. Between chime and chime of the clock I can write essays by the score. Fascinating subjects and noble ideas come pell-mell, each with its appropriate imagery and expression. Nothing stands between me and half-a-dozen imperishable masterpieces but pens, ink, and paper. If it be true that our thoughts and mental images are perfectly tangible things, like our books and pictures, to the inhabitants of the next world, then I am making for myself a better reputation there than I am in this place. Give me a restless hour or two in bed and I can solve, to my own satisfaction, all the doubts of humanity. When I am in the humour I can compose grand symphonies, and paint magnificent pictures.
