Book Review of The Secret Garden
Book Review of "The Secret Garden"
When I am dead, my Dearest
Sing no sad songs for me
Plant thou no roses at my head
Nor shay cypress tree
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet
And if thou wilt, remember
And if thou wilt, forget
Lately, I have read a book called "The Secret Garden",which was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is now one of Burnett's most popular novels, and is considered to be a classic of children's literature. After reading, I deeply feel my heart astounded.
As a consequence of a terrible plague, a 10-year-old little girl, Mary, became an orphan, and had to be sent to the Yorkshire to live with her uncle. In the moor stood her uncle’s house, an old place full of mystery, in which a secret garden had been locked for 10 years, and a sick boy had been kept in the room for years. Unexpectedly, the arrival of Mary almost changed everything. She found the buried key to the secret garden accidentally, as well as its gate hidden by shady leaves. Then she also found the hidden little boy, her cousin Colin. Mary, Colin, together with Dickon began to awaken the sleeping garden.
Reading this novel, I deeply realize, merely optimism can just make us a spirit, and merely a
spirit, we will have health. Sickness which often grows out of our heart is the most torturous disease. Setbacks and sullenness do attack us from time to time, then it feels like that our life is brimful of doom and gloom. Well, what if we act like Mary? What if we hold belief and hope for life? It is exactly we that can make a change upon our misfortune, and the change will be coming our way. For instance, seeing a cup half-filled with milk, a pessimist may yet say: "too bad, only half a cup of milk!" The optimist may say with a smile: "too good, still half a cup of milk!”. Meanwhile, in comparison with Mary, Mr. Craven’s negative behavior assuredly impressed me. Mr. Craven buried the key to the secret garden after the death of her wife, attempting to take this block to the
thoughts of his beloved wife. It did set him into a sorrowful and painful prisoner. There is no way that happiness could ever come since it is partitioned. As for Mr. Craven, burying the key and trying not to face the past can only make him depressed, and to the darkness of death forever. Happiness is the root of life, if happiness is all gone in the world, our empty soul is merely able to weep dolorously like the nightingale. However, Mary, Colin, and Dickon finally found happiness and they also found the true colors of Mr. Craven, a man full of love, kindness as well as happiness.
The garden was born in happiness, abandoned in the tragedy, and lastly it was open in happiness. What a dramatic shift to shout! After
reading "The Secret Garden", I come to know, let us be happy! We can't change the world, but at least we can change ourselves. May happiness be with us throughout our lifetime!
I shall not see the shadows
I shall not feel the pain
I shall not hear the nightingale
Weep on, as if in pain
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set
Haply I may remember
And haply may forget
