Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially (经济)independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process(过程) which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.

The findings are based on a representative sample(代表性样本) of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions(过渡) to grown-up status(地位,状态) to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.

“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married. Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do. This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage.

A great French writer has said that we should help everyone as much as we can because we often need help ourselves. The small even can help the great. About this, he told the following story.

An ant was drinking at a small river and fell in. she tried her best to reach the side, but she couldn’t move at all. The poor ant got too tired but was still doing her best when a big bird saw her. With a pity, the bird threw a piece of wood. With it the ant reached the bank again. While she was resting and drying herself in grass she heard a man coming up. He was walking without shoes on his feet and carrying a gun in his hand. As soon as he saw the bird, he wished to kill her, and he would certainly do so, but the ant bit(咬) him in one of his feet and at that moment the bird flew away at once. It was an animal much weaker and smaller than the bird herself that had saved her life.

66. According to the French writer, we often need help from others, so we

PART IV WRITING (共55分)

SECTION A 摘录信息(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

A new survey is believed to be the largest, most ambitious and most detailed study ever conducted to measure how US adults use media by means of the major screens. The top finding of the study is that today, even with people becoming increasingly mature about modern technology, the TV screen still dominates(控制) their lives and continues to take up the greatest amount of viewing time. The data suggests that computer usage has replaced radio as the second most popular media activity.

For the study, observers followed 350 participants and recorded their exposure to different screens: traditional TV screens, computers, mobile phones and other screens. They were followed from the time they woke up in the morning till they went to bed at night. Young people under 18 were not included in the study.

The study discovered that the average amount of screen time for subjects in all age groups was amazingly similar, at more than 8.5 hours of media exposure a day. Surprisingly, people between the ages of 45 and 54, spent on average an extra hour in front of the screens every day.

Among other interesting findings, it showed that young people were not the only ones who distributed (分配) their attention between screens. People in their mid 20s and 30s were found to spend the most time watching DVD or VCR videos, and those in their 40s and early 50s spent the most time surfing the Web and sending e-mails. People who were over 55 years of age mainly preferred live television.

The data showed that the younger audiences, those between 18 and 24 years of age, mostly college students and people who have just started working, watched the smallest amount of live TV of any age group, spent the most time sending text messages, and watched the most online video.

Section B (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

I have written a lot about habits. After all these years, I’ve come to know there’s one thing that seems more important than anything else. It’s simply this: enjoy the habit.

That might seem obvious to some of you. But you’d be surprised how many people try to force themselves to do things they hate. They try to do so because they think it’ll make them a be tter person or give them a better life. But what kind of life is it if you force yourself to do things you hate all the time?

If you try to make a habit of doing something you don’t like, you’re almost sure to fail. I know, because I’ve tried it many times. If I find myself saying, “I hate this, but I can do it!” then it’s an uphill battle, and one I almost always lose. Because of after a week or two of doing this, you’ll lose enthusiasm. You’ll run out of your energy required to form a new habit, and then miss the habit one day. Soon the habit will be over.

What about doing something you love? Well, you look forward to it. You are excited about it. When you actually enjoy the habit, you’re happy. Your overall experience is positive. That’s a habit that is much more likely to stick to.

I’ve done dozens of experiments in creating habits in my own life. I’ve also helped hundreds of others form habits. And it’s a pattern—when the person doesn’t enjoy the new habit, it fails, and when the person enjoys the new habit, it has

a high degree of success.

书面表达

Dear editor,

I am writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about the relationship between economic development and environment protection.

Some students believe we should never sacrifice environment for economy. They think the present environmental problems are largely caused by rapid economic development. For example, farmable land is decreasing because of the industrial development and the development of cities.

However, other students think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems now and economic development comes first. They believe that environmental problems are only the by-products of economic development, which are unavoidable. They can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.

I think the second view is completely wrong. The purpose of economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. We should aim at sustainable development and a balance between the two.

Yours,

Li Hua
