From Emily Dickinson’s Poet to View Death

Emily Dickinson is a female poet, who is one of the foremost authors in American literature. She lived in a traditional family. Her father believed she doesn’t need to receive education. He never allowed her to have social activities and forced her to quit school. Dickinson’s father despised fashionable books. He said books “can erupt his daughters’ pure heart”. On the contrary, she loved books and this aroused conflict between them. She studied by herself and became unwilling to exchange with others. What’s worse, her mother was also a cold person;she never cared about her daughter’s heart and anything in her home. Dickinson ever said she didn’t own mother at all. Just because she lived in this kind of family, she became strange and indifferent to everything happened in society, even life or death. The unhappy family life of Dickinson is one of reasons to explain her strange characteristics.

Her failure of dream and love is another reason. She published less than ten poems with the anonymous name in her whole life and corrected by the editor. This is a

serious denial to her ability even her life. After that she never published any poems to public. Her biggest hurt in her heart is love. Her love is sorrowful; maybe for her there is not actual love at all. The love is just in her heart. According to several biographies she once loved an editor deeply. However, this editor had married and Dickinson had to give up. These two kinds of failure prompt her desperate outlook of life.

Now let’s talk about what is death in Dickinson’s eyes. She does not believe any religion and regards them as opium. So her view of death is not influenced by the Christianity. Someone says death itself is denial to life and the comprehension to death of poets is a kind of reverse consideration to life. Dickinson’s ideas are fit for this comment. We can know her ideas from her poem “Because I could Not Stop for Death”. In this poem, Dickinson broke the boundary between death and birth with her sensibility and experience to life. She wrote like that:

Because I could not stop for Death----

He kindly stopped for me---

The word “kindly” shows Dickinson doesn’t frighten death and she uses the relax voice to describe it and

transfers to us that death isn’t horrible and it is just a kind person. Her special feeling on death has something with the death of her two important friends. When her first teacher died she had written that death makes me frightened because it strikes me so violent. She hopes that she can fulfill her dream in death. Therefore, death for her has changed its original meaning and had new indication----her friend and hope. In other word, she believes the existence of the eternity. “The Sweeping up the Heart” is sad for everybody whoever is the person dying or his relatives but they can meet in the eternity. These are death, eternity and life for Emily Dickinson.

Death is a mysterious theme for human beings. We must face it bravely just like Emily Dickinson did. Life is short and we should use our limit time to do everything which we want to do and to love somebody whom we want to love, then, when one day we die we would not regret no matter weather there is eternity or not.
