第四部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS?error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, an expert in human-computer inter-action, it is a combination of the two.

We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype(网络电话软件), he told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn?t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of …garbage in garbage out?”.

Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the

problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it?s going to the wrong place. ”

Barry Brown once worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people?s cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS”. It lis ts several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.

Barry Brown says, “To make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together. ”

56. In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to.

A. build up his own reputation

B. laugh at his stupid friend

C. prove the GPS system is only garbage

D. describe an example of human error

57. What is the disadvantage of small screens in GPS equipment according to the text?

A. They just provide the next turn.

B. They are harmful to eyes.

C. They make drivers tired easily.

D. They often break down suddenly.

58. With which of the following statements would Barry Brown most likely agree?

A. GPS units are to blame for most GPS service failures.

B. We should introduce higher standards for the driving license.

C. Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems.

D. Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to improve GPS systems.

59. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Driving with GPS can be difficult.

B. Driving confusions can be caused by small screens.

C. Driving without GPS should be much more convenient.

Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.

A VOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard

double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost $169.15 at https://www.360docs.net/doc/3716260402.html,. A week later, the same room cost $118.15.

If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you're looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as https://www.360docs.net/doc/3716260402.html,, which allows you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.

STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday .

Don't be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge's Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was $95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was $75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just $62.95.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, available for $420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.

GET ON A BIKE London's 'Boris bikes' have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport of car parking costs.

Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around $1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or $5 per day).

60. The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may __________.

A. help travelers pass time

B. attract lots of travelers to the UK

C. allow travelers to make flexible plans

D. cause travelers to pay more for accommodation

61. The passage shows that the O'Neill Flat __________.

A. lies on the ground floor

B. is located in central London

C. provides cooking facilities for tourists

62. The main purpose of the passage is __________.

A. to tell visitors how to book in advance

B. to supply visitors with hotel information

C. to show visitors the importance of self-help

D. to offer visitors some money-saving tips

C

You may not have heard of Ashoka, but for the past 27 years, this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty (贫穷)and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes, Ashoka provides money for the world's most promising "change makers" seeking to solve (解决) urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a change maker .

Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it. The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact It is many young people's ambition to set up programs or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city ,helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there .

When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka?s streets, Attracting tats and disease , they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste . So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把……制成堆粪)this waste . They knew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical fertilizers (化肥) which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years . At first , they were refused ,but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made , the project took off. In 2009 sales were $14,000.

Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious ,practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development.

D. the poor people in Dhaka

64. It can be concluded from the passage that anyone can become a change maker if he ____.

A. considers Drayton's concept

B. gets permission from Ashoka

C. tries to improve social conditions

D. is a young, happy and healthy adult

65. The authors attitude towards Ashoka's program can be described as _____.

A. changing

B. Positive

C. cautious

D. forgiving

In 1974, after filling out fifty applications, gone through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get-a teaching job at what considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen-teaching English.

School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this area rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when hunting season began. I was told they were also frequently absent in late. October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines” just meant to have a good time.

But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class-seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me , the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boy in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girl filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn?t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.

I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying , but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day.

I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door.

He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine.

When he spoke, he said simply, without accusation, “You had nothing to say to

them.”

“You had nothing to say to them ,” he repeated. “No wonder they?re bored. Why get the meat of the literature and stop talking about symbolism. Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior?” We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful, yet, warm, teacher.

As the year progressed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings, he helped me identify my weaknesses and my strengths. In short, he made me the reality of Emerson?s words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.”

Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now.

D. She didn?t like teaching English literature

68. What is the writer?s biggest worry after her taskmaster?s observation of her class?

A. She might lose her teaching job

第五部分:任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Many people believe that classical music has nothing to do with young people today. However, this issue frequently causes heated debate.

Some people say that classical music is associated only with old people .For example, if you look at the audience at a classical concert, the majority is over the age of fifty.

Others say it is more popular than we first imagine. Many young people listen to classical music without realizing. It is often used in films and advertisements. For example, a famous piece of classical music was used as the theme music for the 1990 World Cup. Not many people could have given its name, but millions enjoyed it .

Also, some people point out that young people produce new music based on classical ideas: for example, it is said that rap music was invented by a classical musician in 1912, but it is now used by young people in pop music.

However, young people point to the fact that classical music has been outstripped(超越) by technology. To play a classical instrument, such as a violin, you need to study hard and practice for hours. Nowadays, you don't need to get aching arms from practicing. A teenager can write and make music using a computer program in the comfort of their own bedroom.

A final point to in mind is that the term "classical music" is used to refer to a great variety of music, from jazz to pieces for large orchestras(管弦乐队).This makes it even more difficult to say whether classical music is relevant to young people.

So, it may be only a minority of young people who play classical instruments, but when it comes to enjoying classical music, it depends on the piece of music. It

第六部分:读写任务写作(满分25分)

To many people even the word “work” sounds unpleasant, not necessarily because they are lazy. The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office, may work hard at the weekend ,painting the house or digging the garden.

What is the reason ,then ?In most cases,it is because these people simply do not enjoy the job they are doing .It does not give them any real satisfaction .It may be quite easy ,like making up wooden boxes ,but it is very boring. Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one , such as attaching a door handle to a car .But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say :I have made something !

Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this is the way society is organized. No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect. Society cannot function a single day without the “dull and boring” jobs.

Nowadays, many people dislike their jobs they?re doing because they?re ordinary and boring. However, such common jobs play an important role in our modern society. Undoubtedly, they deserves to be respected. (30 words)

There is no doubt that keeping the streets clean is a hard job. Street cleaners have to work outdoors every day from early morning till late night in spite of any bad weather and low pay. To be honest, if there were no cleaners to serve us, things would become worse and worse. Piles and piles of rubbish would be seen in the streets. Worse still, polluted water would flow and even drown the roads and streets, which develops the spread of diseases, seriously influencing people?s life and health. So we can?t imagine how terrible our life would be without cleaners.

As far as I?m concerned, cleaners play an important role in our modern society, and it?s their effort and devotion that makes the whole world in harmony\harmonious, although they are doing a small, ordinary but boring job.

No doubt, they should not be looked down upon but respected.

A China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks.Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly. To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today? A.Because they are traditional and safe. B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C.Because they are colorful and available. D.Because they are fast and environment friendly. 22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________. A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport C.to experience local culture D.to improve his riding skills 23.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B.It was difficult. C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful. 24. Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience? A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C.The author was praised by the other bikers. D.The author took great pleasure in biking. B A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying, “Good job !”

Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist. Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the United States, she has introduced many helpful journalistic writing skills to me. Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to listen to a journalist's speech, which helped me better understand current events (时事). Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are required to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. It requires a lot of deep thinking and I really learn quite a lot from it. I love Ms. Runkle very much. She not only helps me to get good scores, but also acts as a good friend and always gives me advice on life. 1. After class, the author _____. A. seldom sees Ms. Runkle B. talks with Ms. Runkle quite a lot C. enjoys introducing Ms. Runkle to her friends D. often invites Ms. Runkle to different activities 2. A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
