以!阿丽思漫游奇境记?中的儿歌为例

摘#要#翻译目的引导翻译行为,决定翻译策略的选择。儿歌的翻译目的应该与整个翻译行为的目的相适应,忠实原作还是忠实读者要根据翻译目的而定。!阿丽思漫游奇境记?汉语译本有着广泛的读者群,其中儿歌的翻译体现出了不同的翻译策略和目的。美与忠实的矛盾在儿歌翻译中尽显无遗,究竟要采用何种策略,倾向哪一个阵营,仍然要由翻译目的而定。

##一、引言
Reiss&Ver m eer提出了 目的准则,即一种翻译行为由其目的决定,即 目的决定手段[1]101。目的准则可以用来解释译者在处理直译和意译、形式和内容之间的矛盾时,为何采取某种策略。在文学翻译中,译者也要遵循目的准则,按照翻译的目的进行操作。然而,对于文学翻译的目的,莫衷一是,有的认为译文应当再现原文的文学结构,有的认为应当让读者了解原文的体裁、艺术价值和语言美感,从而丰富目标语,而且使译文读者明白原作为什么值得翻译[1]117。在文学翻译中,译者须以作者的创作意愿为指导原则,按照艺术作品特有的特点调整词汇、句法、修辞和结构,使译文产生与原文独有的表达特点类似的美学效果[1]。下面文章从目的论角度出发,选取!阿丽思漫游奇境记?[2]中几个儿歌的译本为研究对象,探讨目的论对译者翻译策略选择的影响。
二、儿歌的特点
译者翻译儿歌就要了解儿童诗歌的特点[3]63,进而明了儿歌翻译的目的:1)儿童诗歌用语简单易懂,总是以最易懂的方式排列组合出来;2)为了便于吟诵,常采用生活中语言的自然节奏,否则拗口难听;3)主题多为描述儿童的生活,探讨儿童的内心世界、情感与愿望;4)由于儿童重在形象思维,弱在逻辑思维,一般少用抽象词,多用表达色彩、声音与形状的词,多用短句,标注出关联词用以引导儿童读者来联系上下文;5)主题一般升华到普遍性原理,具有正面导向作用与启蒙教育目的。因此,译者在确定翻译对象为儿童时,就要考虑到这几个因素,让孩子们在了解外国文化时,更多地享受阅读的快乐,发挥译文的教育作用。
三、几首儿歌的译本分析
!阿丽思漫游奇境记?是著名作家刘易斯写给教父的女儿的作品,后来广为流传,成为儿童文学的一部分。若把它译成汉语,译给中国的儿童,首先要看原作者的意图和译本是否符合目标语的情境。以文中的一首诗歌为例:

这首诗歌是阿丽思在几经变化以后,发现自己不知道究竟发生了什么事,试着背!小鳄鱼?来看自己是谁的时候说的怪词。这首诗是根据英国诗人艾萨克瓦茨(IssacW atts,1674-1748)的说教诗!反对懒惰和胡闹?写的,在当时英国的读者看来是很熟悉的,然而,时至今日,人们对原诗的了解已经很少,在翻译的时候,译者可以考虑到目的语读者的文化素质和水平而翻译。作为儿童文学的一部分,译者要本着为儿童服务的准则,争取译出简单明了、而又颇有情趣的作品,在无法传递某些信息的时候,适当地改译或增加一些内容,这是儿歌翻译中必须要注意的问题。看下面几则译文:

译文(1)是赵元任的译作,(2)来自电子文本,(3)是陈复庵的译文。三者基本上都是描写小鳄鱼的神态和动作,但表达方式略有不同。译文(1)简洁明快,读来琅琅上口,其中也不乏情趣。例如 晒尾巴、 洒点清水、 一口温和气等,可爱的鳄鱼形象呼之欲出。这种写法符合儿童阅读的心理,简单有趣,能够吸引小孩的注意力,给他们带来一点欢乐。同时赵译押 a韵,节奏明快,读起来更上口,更易于中国的小朋友记忆。译文(2)直译的成分更多一些,句子稍长,难以记忆,虽然原诗的意义基本传递出来了,但译文读来缺少了一些情趣。译文(3)在照顾原文的同时,又修饰了译文的词句,读起来更顺口,更欢快,有儿歌的味道。三个文本虽各有千秋,但基本都照顾了原作者的意图,也考虑到了目标语读者的审美情趣和文化水平。
另外,比较有争议的诗歌是!小蝙蝠?的译文,原文如下:

这首诗是仿照英国诗人简泰勒(Jane Tylor, 1792-1853)的一首著名的诗!星星?( The Star)而作的打油诗。今天的小朋友对!星星?这首歌也不陌生了,因此读来也要有熟悉的感觉,并且意趣盎然。看以下两则译文:

赵译音译Tw inkle为汀格儿,而陈译则保留了原词的意义,这两种译法各有特色。赵译时间久远,那时的孩子们恐怕还不知道!小星星?这首歌,因此音译更容易让儿童接受。而陈译是1981年的译本,改革开放的时候正值引进学习西方的初始阶段,直译虽然会使儿童感到好奇,小蝙蝠怎么会一闪一闪的呢?但是,通过加注说明,也基本传递了原文的意义。陈译如今应该更受欢迎,因为今天的儿童对这首歌已经很熟悉了,再读这首译诗也会想起!小星星?这首歌,或许会有一些启发。第二句的译文,at表明了蝙蝠飞的方向,赵译用了文言味十足的 好好儿说来你何所欲!,不知道小孩读到这里能否明白,而陈译直接翻译成了 不知你往哪里扑!则比较简洁明快,直接生动地描述了蝙蝠的动作。下面两句的译文赵译用了 那么、 茶盘儿、 飘呀飘这种儿童喜欢的语言,更亲切生动地表现出了原文的情趣。不仿综合两种版本的优点,合成为更为儿童喜闻乐见的译文:
一闪,一闪,小蝙蝠!
不知你往哪里扑!
飞在天上那么高,
像个茶盘儿飘呀飘。
一闪,一闪
徐德容[4]33在!儿童文学翻译刍议?中从儿童文学的语体特征、儿童情趣和跨文化交际三个方面,分析了儿童文学的特点及译者应该注意的问题。他指出,儿童对具体形象性很依赖,韵律和节奏给儿童以审美愉悦,能够激发他们的情绪,因此,译者遣词造句要琅琅上口,有较强的节奏感和音乐性。从上文的分析我们可以看出,译者基本注意到了这一点,在使用词语时力求明白如话,意义充实而情趣盎然。
另外,在海龟唱!美味的汤?的一节中,我们发现各种译文的差距不小,赵译把beautiful soup译成了 体面汤,而其它两个译本都是 美味的汤,因此在用词方面各不相同。尤其在抒情的几行,赵译用了 半夜起来喝面汤,体面汤!半夜起来喝面汤,体面汤!涕洟糜餍汤!涕洟糜餍汤!而其它两个译本都是 晚餐用的汤,美味的汤,晚餐用的汤,美味的汤,美%%味的汤%%汤!美%%味的汤%%汤!显然,赵译改译了歌曲的内容,把假海龟的憨态用 面汤、 体面汤、 俩子儿汤表现出来了,而另外两个直译的译本,虽然忠实地传达出了原文的内容,却没有赵译有趣,更能吸引儿童读者。并且,这首歌曲是仿照当时的歌曲而作,时隔境迁,这种情趣已经很难传递到今天,更别说外国了,因此,只能靠加注的方式告知读者,但这种方式丝毫不能增加人们对歌曲的感觉,译者应该适当处理原文,把目的转到假海龟的身上,让人们对假海龟的憨态举止更感兴趣,让儿童读者对故事中的人物印象更加深刻,见赵译如下:

盛在锅里不会凉!
说什么山珍海味,哪儿有这么样儿香。
半夜起来喝面汤,体面汤!

目前,!阿丽思漫游奇境记?有好多译本,然而,优秀的译本并不多,就连赵译也受到了质疑和批评。在!名著与名译?一文中,叶至善[5]评价赵译说: 据说原作到处妙趣横生,这位赵老先生只怕体现不出来,译的时候费尽心思。 这样一本名著名译,原式原样印出来供专门家研究,看来很有必要;让孩子们自己读恐怕难,很难。如果是为了学习英语的需要和研究需要,忠实的译文是有帮助的,可以让学习者和研究者尽快接近原文和原作者,理解原文的意义和写作风格等。但是,如果为了孩子们翻译儿歌,那么最有发言权的就是孩子们,如果他们喜欢则说明译文可读,如果孩子们看不懂或不喜欢,就说明译者的策略选择错误或水平有限难以实现译文可读性。
在处理儿歌翻译的过程中,译者往往受制于原文的内容和框架,虽然努力做到了字面 忠实,却没有考虑儿童读者的特点,尤其没有考虑到儿童的阅读和欣赏水平。原文是想给孩子们带来乐趣,而译文却造成了很多阅读困难,不容易激发儿童的兴趣,从而原文的目的无法在译文中实现。与原文相比,各个译本都略有失彩的地方。儿歌翻译的读者是儿童群体,译者要充分考虑到本国文化的特点和本国儿童的心理,坚持创作的精神,摆脱原文形式和内容的束缚,才能做出读者喜闻乐见的译本来,更加丰富人们的精神世界。
四、小结
文章从目的论的角度出发,考察了儿歌翻译的目的和策略。通过比较!阿丽思漫游奇境记?中几个典型的儿歌译本,发现译者在翻译儿歌的过程中,有的侧重原文意义的忠实传递,牺牲了诗歌的韵律和儿童读物的趣味性,有的译本虽然保留了韵律,考虑到了读者的需要,但不够忠实。在评价这些译本的得失时,我们要充分考虑译者的翻译目的。如果为了研究原文需要,忠实的翻译要更合乎翻译目的;如果为了愉悦儿童读者,有趣的翻译更合乎翻译目的。翻译目的,不仅是原作的目的,更重要的是译者的目的,是翻译行为的目的,因此,在评价译文时,也要看清翻译行为背后的目的和译者本身的需要,不能一刀切。
