阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。English is an important global language, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn – but they weren’t always successful.

In 1930, Professor CK Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it

in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in ‘real’ English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. For example, if you wanted a watermelon, you asked for ‘a large g reen fruit with the form of an egg, which has a sweet red inside and a good taste’! RE Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language called Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. ‘Father’ became ‘faadher, ‘new’ became ‘nue’ and ‘years’ became ‘yeerz’. Unfortunately for some students of English, Anglic never became popular.

Even easier is the language which ships’ captains use: it’s called ‘Seaspeak’. Seaspeak uses a few simple phrases for every possible situation. In Seaspeak, for example you don’t say, ‘I’m sorry what did you say?’ or ‘I didn’t understand, can you repeat that?’ ... it’s just, ‘Say again.’ No more grammar!

In the age of international communication through the Internet who knows? ... a new form of English might appear. A large number of the world’s e-mails are in English and include examples of ‘NetLingo’ like OIC (Oh, I see) and TTYL (Talk to you later). In another fifty years, English as we know it might not exist ... we will probably all speak fluent Internetish!

61. The best title for the passage would be ______.

A.Seaspeak

B. Basic English

C. Easy English

D. Internetish 【答案】C

【解析】标题归纳题。根据Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn文章开头就指出主题怎样把英语变得更加简单,下文叙述了人们的不同做法,故选C。

62. It will take a person about ______ weeks to learn Basic English if he spends two hours learning it every day.

A. six

B. four

C. three

D. two

【答案】D

【解析】细节理解题。根据Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours.花30个小时,一天两个小时所以总共花两周的时间,故选D。

63. According to Professor Zachrisson, what was the biggest problem for learners of English?

A. Grammar.

B. Vocabulary.

C. Spelling.

D. Speaking.

【答案】C

【解析】细节理解题。根据RE Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, Zachrisson教授说最大的问题是拼写,故选C。

64. Which of the following is likely to be Anglic?

A. A graet batl.

B. IOU

C. Long time no see.

D. Two five, no lights.

【答案】A

【解析】细节理解题。根据Anglic was similar to English,可推出选项A的单词拼写上看出近似于英语但又不是英语,故选A。

65. What might happen to English in another fifty years?

A. It might become a global language.

B. It might be replaced by Internetish.

C. It might take the place of all other languages.

D. It might become more and more difficult.

语篇解读:本语篇节选自词典,考查学生通过查词典来理解词句的能力。

答案及剖析:1.B 猜测词义题。He ran in every five minutes to pump me about the case与原文中的She was pumping me for details of the new project.相仿,所以该pump 意为“to keep asking someone for information, especially in a way that is not direct”。

2.C 推理判断题。“The TV program kept pumping out commercials”一句与“The government keeps pumping out the same old propaganda.”相仿,故该pump out意为“to produce words or loud music in a way that is repeated, forceful and continuous”,那是人们所不喜欢的、讨厌的东西。

3.A 事实细节题。从原文可知,“pump-priming”意为“the activity of helping a business,programme,economy,etc.to develop by giving it money”,所以答案为A。

4.D 推理判断题。“His speech was OK but it had no real punch”与“I felt the performance/speech/presentation lacked punch.”有关,可知punch应当是“interesting and powerful”的意思。

Mark often talked constantly. I had to remind him again and again that talking without permission was not acceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response every time I had to correct h im for misbehaving.“Thank you for correcting me, Sister!” I didn’t know what to make of it at first, but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day. One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often, and then I made a new teacher’s mistake.I looked at him and said,“If you say one more word, I am going to tape(用胶带封上) your mouth shut!” It wasn’t ten seconds later when Chuck, another student, blurted out, “Mark is talking again.” I hadn’t asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it. I remember the scene as if it had occurred this morning. I walked to my desk, very deliberately opened my drawer and took out a roll of masking tape.Without saying a word, I proceeded to Mark’s desk, tore off two pieces of tape and made a big X with them over his mouth.I then returned to the front of the room.As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winked at me.When I walked back to Ma rk’s desk and removed the tape, his first words were, “Thank you for correcting me, Sister.” One Friday, I asked the students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then I told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down.It took the remainder of the class period to finish the assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed me the paper. That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and I listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday I gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling.“Really?” I heard the whispers.“I never knew that meant anything to anyone!”“I didn’t know others liked me so much!”Then Mark said, “Thank you for teaching me, Sister.” No one ever mentioned those pieces of paper in class again.I never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents. Several years later, after I returned from vacation, my parents met me at the airport.Mother gave Dad a side-ways glance and simply said,“Dad?” My father cleared his throat as he usually did before saying something important.“The Eklunds called last night,” he bega n.“Really?”I said.“I haven’t heard from them in years.I wonder how Mark is.”Dad responded quietly.“Mark was killed in the Vietn am War,” he said.“The funeral(葬礼) is tomorrow, and his parents would like it if you could attend.” I had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. Mark looked so handsome, so mature. After the funeral, Mark’s mother and father found me.“We want to show you something,”his father said.“They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it.” Opening a billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces

In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in‖ A Tale of Two Cities.‖These days, it might be A Tale of One City. Parisians are these days likely to smile in sympathy at a visitor‘s broken French and respond in polite English. As jobs grew lack at home over recent years, perhaps 250000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs. Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down. ―For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,‖ said Trevor Wheeler, a banker.
