Living near the beach may come with an extra perk(利益): better health. A new study analyzed information from more than 48 million people in England and found that the nearer they lived to the coast, the more likely people were to report good health within the past year.

Living near the coast may be associated with better health because the seaside environment reduces stress, the researchers said. They pointed to another British study that found that people who took trips to the coast experienced more feelings of calmness and relaxation than those who visited urban parks or the countryside.

The difference from living near the coast was relatively small. But a small effect, when applied to an entire population can have a substantial impact on public health ,said study researcher Ben Wheeler of Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Exeter, England.

However, it’s too soon to advise people to hit the beach to improve health, Wheeler said. The study only found an association, not a cause-effect link, and it’s possible that other factors could explain the results. For instance, it could be that people who are wealthier, and therefore healthier, are more able to move to desired locations such as the coast, Wheeler said, a phenomenon known as the migrant effect. But the study did find that the association between coastal living and better health was strongest for those living in the poorest areas, which perhaps indicates that wealth cannot explain the results, Wheeler said.

Because the study looked at only England—an island country in which everyone lives within 72 miles of the coast—it’s not clear whether the findings w ould apply to other populations. Far from England, a health expert not involved in the study said that while the British research certainly doesn’t prove that people’s health and the place they live are linked, it’s possible that proximity to the seas does something for our bodies.

If future studies confirm the results, the next step would be to find out it is what coastal environments that can benefit health. Wheeler said it may then be possible to bring those benefits to people living in other areas, through virtual environments, for instance.

24. We can conclude from the passage that ______.

A. people are encouraged to move to the coast

B. people pay increasingly attention to health

C. people living near the sea may be healthier

D. people are worried about residential environment

25. According to the researchers, living near the sea ______.

A. doesn’t nearly affect the British population

B. can cure some difficult diseases in a way

C. means freeing from sadness or troubles

D. can help get over one’s stress

26. What Ben Wheeler said means ______.

A. exact reasons are proposed for further research

B. concrete evidence favors life near the sea

C. wealthier people are likely to be healthier

D. the British public health is decreasing

27. What does t he underlined word ―proximity‖ in the passage mean?

A. being distant

B. being close

C. being similar

D. being opposite

C

Earlier this year, my oldest daughter got braces(矫正器) on her teeth, and let’s just say she did not go quietly into that dentist’s chair. Fear and hate pretty much describe the days leading up to her first appointment.

So when she finally walked out with shiny teeth, a sore(疼痛的) mouth and a broken spirit, I told her I was proud of her and took her to Ben & Jerry’s for an ice cream reward. Two weeks later, we returned to the scene of the crime. The dentist spent about 45 seconds checking her teeth before sending her on her merry way. Before I could start the car, she was placing her ice cream order. She was shocked wh en I told her that she wasn’t going to get a reward every time we g et her teeth checked.

Clearly, she’s not alone. According to some parenting experts, kids are easily addicted to a benefit-producing system of parental rewards and bribes—it’s not all ice creams, candies and cool toys. Some parents are offering their children prizes to just let them sit down and behave in a restaurant—or sleep in their own beds—or score a goal in the next soccer game.

While the experts agree that occasional awards are okay, the danger lies in the system’s overuse. Kids quickly gain a sense of entitlement(应得的权利), where they come to expect a big reward for every good thing that they do, no matter how small. To keep things in check, experts say parents should reduce the number of rewards they offer, make sure rewards match the behavior and explain the real benefits of behaving for the sake of behaving.

Have you used bribery or a reward system with your kids? Was it successful? Do your kids expect more because of that system?

28. The intended readers of the passage are________.

A. children

B. parents

C. doctors

D. teachers

29. What does the author mean by saying ―the scene of the crime‖?

A. He/she doubted whether the dentist was skilled.

B. He/she felt very sorry for his/her daughter’s illness.

C. His/her daughter had a bad feeling for the dentist’s.

D. His/her daughter suffered a lot from her illness.

30. Similar to the author’s daughter, children_________.

A. are often troubled by bad teeth.

B. receive certain rewards when becoming ill.

C. are afraid to visit a dentist.

D. expect more reward from their parents.

31. Misguided by the parental reward system, children easily think__________.

A. they should benefit from their every desired behavior.

B. they can be successful as long as they work hare.

C. their parents must be far more rich than other s’

D. their parents will feel happy when they behave well.

Time Travel

If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds. The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term ―time machine‖, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.

But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called ―wormholes‖, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship –going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task. Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the ―grandfather paradox‖. It

asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?

And would you really like to visit the future? In H.G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black blob with tentacles(触角). If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.

32. The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show___________.

A. People’s interest in time travel

B. the special feature of the book.

C. the long history of time travel.

D. the contribution of H.G. Wells.

33. Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories___________.

A. have similarities in many ways.

B. push the invention of the first spaceship.

C. have proved wrong by some time travelers.

D. suggest the possibility to invent the time machine.

34. In Paragraph 4, ―grandfather paradox‖ probably refers to the idea that___________.

A. the traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather.

B. the traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather.

C. the grandfather’s death makes the traveler’s birth impossible.

D. The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness.

35. According to the passage, what is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?

A. Unclear.

B. Skeptical.

C. Supportive.

D. Unconcerned.

Dear Peter,

I’m glad to know what you have been studying Chinese in an university in Beijing for about one month. Just as you have found, Chinese differ from English greatly. The pronunciation and the spelling of the Chinese words are very complicated, and so is the sentence structures. That is because many people, especially foreigners, have great difficulty in learning Chinese.

However, practice makes perfect. If you can read and write Chinese as many as you can, you have a good command of it. In addition, you should look for more opportunities to communicate with the native people to get familiar to different accents as well as our cultures, which will help you a lot.

Don’t give up. I’m sure you can learn Chinese well. I can offer you some help if it necessary. Best wishes!

Yours

W: How long will I wait?

M: It may be twenty or thirty minutes during weekdays. But today is the weekend, where are so many patients waiting outside. Maybe you need to wait for about 45 minutes.

Text 2

W: Could you come to meeting Friday morning?

M: I’m not sure. Let me check my schedule and get back to you in a few minutes.

W: Sure. If I’m not in, please leave a message on my answering machine.

Text 3

M: Have you booked the tickets for the film tonight?

W: Yes. And there is a car park at the back of the theater if you’re driving. I’m in the café across the road waiting for you.

Text 4

M: Did you get anything from the duty-free shop?

W: Well. I looked for the CDs I’d promised I’d get for Tony. Unfortunately, they’d sold all of them, so I had enough money for a handbag for myself. But I forgot about the chocolates for Mary.

Text 5

W: Hey, is this really you?

M: Yes. I really love it.

W: At Christmas when I was ten. I got a new camera from my parents. And I took this picture with

it.

Text 6

W: How long do you think we should stay in Australia?

M: Two or three weeks. We could spend a week in the bush, a week at the Great Barrier Reef as well as a few days on the beach for tired office workers.

W: That doesn’t sound too bad. I’d certainly like to go living. That is the reason why I would like to go to Australia.

M: Also we could hire a car and travel around the inland parts of Australia for several days.

W: We’d have to plan our drive before we leave. Let’s get a good guidebook from the bookstore when we go shopping in town tomorrow.

Text 7

W: Hi, Tom. You look unhappy. What happened?

M: I’m worried about the presentation which I have to give next Friday evening. I don’t know to prepare for it.

W: Oh, maybe you can ask for some advice from our tutor or senior students who have given a presentation before.

M: But how can I get in touch with a senior student?

W: You can look for some useful information on our school network, https://www.360docs.net/doc/435739970.html,.

M: Really? Can I get all the answers on the web?

W: Of course. You can ask questions on the web and then wait for someone to answer. Or you can also keep in touch with our tutor by e-mail or telephone.

Text 8

W: What were you doing when the car crash happened?

M: I was cycling home from school with my friend.

W: Were you going fast?

M: I don’t think so. That’s a medium speed for my bicycle. I usually cycle like this and nothing has every happened.

W: What color were the traffic lights?

M: They had turned green for us.

W: So how do you remember the accident?

M: The businessman was walking across when his phone rang. He stopped to answer it, I guess. It was still ringing when we were already sitting on the ground.

W: Did you see the car crash?

M: Yes. The driver didn’t stop the car until it was too late. The businessman was knocked over. I fell off my bike and my legs were hurt here, but I was worried about the businessman. He was unconscious when the ambulance came.

Text 9

M: Ms. Fischer. I see you are now working at the university in teaching program development. W: Yes.

M: It was here that you are developing language lessons for the computer. So why are you interested in our company?

W: Well, the project that I’m working on is going to end in a few months, but I have become very interested in the field and would like to continue it.

M: But right now you are developing software. If you worked for us, you would be selling software.

W: Yes, I understand that. I’ve been working recently on testing the programs on students, and I’ve learned great deal from that process. That means then that I can explain the product in a convincing manner.

M: Yes, that certainly would be an advantage. Do you have a lot of international travel experience? For this job, we would be sending you abroad.

W: Well, I’ve travelled to Asia twice. I went to Japan once and Korea the other time. I have always wanted to go to South America.

M: Chile might be your choice then.

W: That sounds fascinating.

Text 10

W: So you were back in Venezuela on a visit then?

M: Yes, that’s right. I was walking to the beach along a jungle path when I heard this noise like a series of explosions. I suspected that someone was attempting to shoot me so I hid behind a fallen tree trunk, but then I realized that the shots seemed to be coming straight from the tree tops.

W: You must have been terrified.

M: Of course. I found that the forest there was made up of a tree called Jabillo. And the noise was not gunfire. It was the explosions made by the woody fruits on the Jabillo trees bursting open. There were thousands of shells covering an area of about 50 meters around me. Then I noticed some wooden shells falling down from the trees around me from time to time. But when I picked up some of the shells I was even more astonished. They looked like dolphins---they had the same shape.

W: So what did you do?

M: I went back to Spain and talked to a friend there who ran a magazine. I would like him to do a report on Jabillo, but instead he wanted to give away the shells with his magazine. He said he would need 500,000 shells in six months.

W: But you couldn’t possibly collect so many in such a short time, could you?

M: I figured that I would need to collect about 17,000 a week to meet the deadline. After the first week back in Venezuela I’d only my managed to collect about 6,000. in the end, I decided to pay local families to gather the shells and somehow we managed to get the 500,000 ready to be shipped to Spain by the due date.
