His wife ,Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift--$7,000, a legacy(遗产)form their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident . “It really made a difference when we were going under financially.” says Dave.

But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families we re touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases , it was a few thousand dollars ; in others, it was more than $100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money , more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm .

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on(喜欢)comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase .

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy---a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents ---should enrich the whole community(社区)and last for generations to come .

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”

“Two full inches in the first three days!”

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of

products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters . The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug , FDA(Food Drug Administration)can require proof(证明)under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market . But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.

Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceeding (法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.

46. It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are ______.

A. objective

B. costly

C. unreliable

D. illegal

47. Which of the following is true according to the text?

A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous product.

B. New products are more likely to be questionable.

C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.

D. The promoters usually just care about profits.

48. The Relaxacisor is mentioned as_______.

A. a product which was designed to produce electricity

B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case

C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product

D. an example of a quality beauty product

49. The author intends to __________

A. make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises

B. show the weakness of the law on product safety

C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful

D. introduce tbe organization of FDA

We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections(感染)we think of as human infections started in other animals. ”says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.

It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to u s. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen’s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowled ge of them,” says Isaksen.

“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,”says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug (病毒)may be kind at first. But some strains(变异体)may become harmful. Monkey-pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.

50. We learn from Paragraph I that the pet sold at the shop may___________

A. come from Columbia

B. enjoy being with children

C. prevent us from being infected

D. suffer from monkey-pox

51. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?

A. They attack human beings.

B. We need to study native animals.

C. They can’t live out of the rain forest.

D. We do not know much about them yet.

52. What does the phrase “the wake-up call” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?

A. a new disease

B. a clear warning

C. a dangerous animal

D. a morning animal

53. The text suggests that in the future we_________________.

A.may have to fight against more new diseases B should not be allowed to have pets

C. may easily get infected by diseases from dogs

D. should stop buying pets from Africa

D

It’s not easy being a teenager-nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while making him realize that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you.

Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’t insist he tell you what’s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve(解决)things by himself. Show respect for your teenager’s privacy(隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.

54. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ___________.

A.how to get along with a teenager

B. how to respect a teenager

C.how to understand a teenager

D. how to help a teenager grow up

55. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. become excited

B. show respect

C. refuse to talk

D. seek help

56. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text?

A.Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.

B. Give him advice only when necessary.

B.Let him have his own telephone.

D. Not talk about personal things with him.

Four people in England, back in 1953, stared at photo 51. it wasn’t much —a picture showing a black X. But three of these people won the Nobel Prize for figuring out what the photo really showed—the shape of DNA. The discovery brought fame and fortune to scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Willkins. The fourth, the one who actually made the picture, was left out.

Her name was Rosalind Franklin. “She should have been up there,” says historian Mary Bowden. “ If her photo hadn’t been there, the others couldn’t have come up with the structure. ” One reason Franklin was missing was that she had died of cancer four years before the Nobel decision. But now scholar doubt that Franklin was not only robbed of her life by disease but robbed of credit by her competitions.

At Cambridge University in the 1950s, Watson and Crick tried to make models by cutting up shapes of DNA’s parts and then putting them together. In the meantime, at King’s College in London, Franklin and Wilkins shone X-rays at the molecule(分子). The rays produced patterns reflecting the shape.

But Wilkins and Franklin’s relationship was a lot rockier than the celebrated teamwork of Watson and Crick. Wilkins thought Franklin was hired to be his assistant. But the college actually employed her to take over the DNA project.

What she did was produce X-ray pictures that told Watson and Crick that one of their early models was inside out. And she was not shy about saying so. That angered Watson, who attacked her in return, “Mere inspection suggested that she would no t easily bend. Clearly she had to go or be put in her place. ”

As Franklin’s competitors, Wilkins, Watson and Crick had much to gain by cutting her out of the little group of researchers, says historian Pnina Abir-Am. In 1962 at the Nobel Prize awarding ceremony, Wilkins thanked 13 colleagues by name before he mentioned Franklin. Watson wrote his book laughing at her. Crick wrote in 1974 that “Franklins was only two steps away from the solution.”

No, Franklin was the solution. “She contributed more than a ny other player to solving the structure of DNA. She must be considered a co-discoverer,” Abir-Am says. This was backed up by Aaron Klug, who worked with Franklin and later won a Nobel Prize himself. Once described as the “Dark Lady of DNA”, Franklin is fi nally coming into the light.

57. What is the text mainly about?

A. The disagreements among DNA researchers.

B. The unfair treatment of Franklin.

C. The process of discovering DNA. D The race between two teams of scientists.

58. Watson was angry with Franklin because she ______.

A. took the lead in the competition

B. kept her results from him

C. proved some of his findings wrong

D. shared her data with other scientists

59. Why is Franklin described as “Dark Lady of DNA”?

A. She developed pictures in dark labs.

B. She discovered the black X—the shape of DNA.

C. Her name was forgotten after her death.

D. Her contribution was unknown to the public.

60. What is the writer’s attitude toward Wilkins, Watson and Crick?

A. Disapproving

B. Respectful.

C. Admiring

D. Doubtful

Dear Li Hua,

How are you?

Every student in our school as well as in your school will be faced with the question when he passes the College-Entrance Examinations. Should be choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to choose majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. it will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future. However, those who think differently believe that good universities have better teachers and better conditions. The graduates from leading universities are of ten more likely to find a good job. In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because not matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best. Doing whatever we are fond of will benefit us. It will lead to our great achievements.
