Sunstroke is a condition that can quickly go from dangerous to deadly, especially if proper care isn’t giv en immediately.

Sunstroke, sometimes called heatstroke, is a result of the body temperature rising above safe limits. This causes the body’s necessary functions to stop working.

It’s usually pretty easy to avoid sunstroke, as long as proper action is tak en. In that case, you need to act as quickly as possible to return that person’s body to a safe temperature. Here are a few tips to help treat sunstroke.

Call for help

Call to get an ambulance as quickly as possible. This should be the first thing you do, especially if the sun stroked person has fainted(昏迷). Also, call for help from anyone nearby if you’re in a public place. If there’s no one around, call someone nearby if they can get there sooner than an ambulance. Ask everyone to bring you as much water as possible, if there isn’t much nearby.

Get the person to a cooler area

If there’s a building nearby, aim for that. Anywhere with plenty of air conditioning and water is perfect. If a building isn’t available, bring the person to a well shaded area.

Get the water flowing

If the person is still conscious, get him or her to drink water. If there’s a bathtub available, fill it with cool water and put the person in it.

If your water supply is limited, you have to save it. Dampen a towel or shirt and put it on the person’s body. Focus on the face, neck, and chest.

Fan the person

Getting moving air over the person cools him or her down. Use anything, a towel or sheet, a shirt, your hands, or a piece of board. This is where having many people

around really helps, as they can combine to fan the entire body.

Hello, this is your captain speaking.

Okay, I lied. I don’t sit in the cockpit(驾驶舱). I sit where you sit. And I fly a lot. So I would like to suggest ways we may meet when we are on the plane.

Here are a few gentle suggestions:

First, when you finally sit down, think before you push your seat back into the person behind you. Breaking kneecaps(膝盖骨)is for violent movies.

Feet. As in bare feet. Don’t do it. Maybe at home you like to take off your socks and plant your toes wherever you like, but not on a plane, okay? I recently sat next to a wo man who stuck her bare feet on the cabin wall! Please. Unless you’re Spider-Man and about to walk upside down, keep the shoes on, all right?

Kids. Let’s talk about kids. Kids love airplanes. Many can’t believe they have a seat in front of them; they can kick all flight long, while Mom and Dad watch the movie. Please. Tell them to stop.

And if you’ve got a crying baby at least pretend you’re trying to keep him quiet. Don’t hide behind a US Weekly.

Also, once your kids stop crying, the plane should not hear from them again until they are old enough to be—and actually are—the pilots. I recently had a little boy behind me who all flight long kept singing, at the top of his lungs, “Go-Go-Go. . . the cat in the hat! ”. I don’t know this song, but I do know his mom did nothing to stop him.

So there you go. With a little cooperation, we can all have a better year as passengers. Thank you for your attention. And now, as the captain says, sit back and relax.

8. Who is the author most probably?

A. A captain.

B. A pilot.

C. An airline employee.

D. An airline passenger.

9. The author thinks the woman who put her bare feet on the cabin wall______.

A. disgusting

B. dirty

C. cold

D. boring

10. According to the text, the author seems to______.

A. dislike badly-behaved kids

B. oppose kids’ traveling by air

C. hope parents try to control their babies

D. think some parents shouldn’t read newspapers

11. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Say No to Violence

B. Mind Your Own Business

C. Making the Flight a Bit Friendlier

D. Safety Tips about Traveling by Air

Who decided that blue jeans and T-shirts are “cool” for kids to wear today? Who designs the clothes you see for sale in stores? All of these questions concern the world of fashion.

Fashion refers to the styles of dress that are currently popular. Fashion goes beyond just clothes, though. It’s important for some people to wear only the latest fashions and styles. For others, though, keeping up with trends isn’t that important. The one thing that stays the same with fashion is this: it always changes!

In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies made bell-bottomed blue jeans popular. In the 1980s, Michael Jackson made parachute pants (降落伞裤) all the fashion. Now try to find these items in t oday’s clothing stores!

Why do fashions change? The answer is probably as simple as the fact that people change. Over time, the new replaces the old. People are influenced greatly by popular culture, including athletes, musicians, movie stars, as well as popular films, television shows, books and music. We are also influenced by the fashion industry’s advertising.

The stars of popular culture are always searching for a new angle to maintain (保持) their popularity. Often these new angles come in the form of new clothing or hairstyles. When people see these new styles, they often want to imitate their favorite stars. To do so, they seek out the latest fashions to make themselves look like the people they want to imitate. In this way, fashions evolve and change over time.

For years, clothes have been used to separate people into groups. Even today, brand-name clothing that is more expensive than other types of clothing can be used by some people to distinguish themselves from others.

Unfortunately, this can often have the effect of distancing certain groups from others. Don’t forget that it’s always OK to develop your own sense of style that is unique and separate from what the fashion world determines! Stay true to yourself and let your personality — not your clothes — speak for who you are!

12. The examples of bell-bottomed blue jeans and parachute pants in Paragraph 3 suggest that _____.

A. fashion always changes

B. stars are always influential

C. people have different dressing styles

D. hippies and Michael Jackson are good designers

13. Fashions change mainly because _____.

A. advertisements change rapidly

B. popular culture influences people

C. movie stars are changing over time

D. new films and shows replace the old

14. In the last paragraph, the author mainly wants to stress _____.

A. the advantages of staying unique

B. the bad effects of following fashion

C. the good influences of popular styles

D. the importance of having one’s own personality

15. We can learn from the text that _____.

A. fashion is all about clothes

B. the author has gone out of fashion

C. clothes may separate and distance people

D. people like imi tating others’ dressing style

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Everybody likes to get a freebie(赠品). On my way to work today I was offered a bottle of new mineral water. Lucky me eh? 16 —where you can get a freebie depends on a number of factors.

For businesses, giving out something for nothing is an important marketing technique. They want to see our reaction and hear our feedback(反馈) and finally make us buy more. 17 .They want to target the so-called trendsetters, in the hope that they will speak positively about the product and encourage people to buy more.

Living in a capital city certainly improves your chances of getting a freebie.

18 . So if you live in London, Paris or Beijing, you’ll probably see a new promotional campaign starting there first. The hope is that the fashionable people there will try and like the new item and support it on social media. Eventually everyone around the country will know about it.
