Bicycle Safety

Operation Always ride your bike in a safe, controlled manner on campus(校园). Obey rules and regulations. Watch out for walkers and other bicyclists, and always use your lights in dark conditions.

Theft Prevention Always securely lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack—even if you are only away for a minute. Register your bike with the University Department of Public Safety. It's fast, easy, and free. Registration permanently records your serial number, which is useful in the possible recovery of the bike stolen.

Equipment

Brakes Make sure that they are in good working order and adjusted properly.

Helmet Make sure your helmet meets current safety standards and fits properly.

Lights Always have a front headlight—visible at least 500 feet in front of the bike.

A taillight is a good idea.

offer appropriate aid, call the Department of Public Safety and remain at the scene until the officer lets you go.

Bicycle Parking Only park in areas reserved for bikes. Trees, handrails, hallways, and sign posts are not for bicycle parking, and parking in such spots can result in a fine.

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as the primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It's faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are

taking_stock_in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I'm familiar with it.”

“I'm not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said,“Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

1. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A.The importance of handwriting and typing

B.To type or to handwrite? C.Writing by computer will replace writing by hand D.Practical and aesthetic value of Chinese characters

2. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because______.

A.they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays

B.they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently

C.they find it not easy to remember how to write a character

D.computers have become a trend and fashion in China

3. Which of the following statements is NOT true of the advantages of handwriting?

A.Handwriting contains the writer's emotion.

B.The writer's thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.

C.Handwriting can impress people well and build one's self-confidence.

D.Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.

4. The underlined expression “taking stock in”(Paragraph 4) probably means “____”.

A.getting bored with B.getting dependent on

C.becoming crazy about D.getting curious about

5. We can draw the conclusion from the passage that________.

A.more and more students will give up writing on a computer

B.writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day

C.more and more students will pay attention to handwriting

D.the typing article better expresses one's emotion and quality

III. 读写任务阅读下面的短文, 然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Jackie is perhaps the most easily annoyed koala(考拉)at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in southern Australia. All the koalas there are unhappy and complaining. You would be too if you were used to night activities and someone kept waking you up all day while you were trying to sleep it off. That’s right--sleep it off. The average koala is always half asleep because it feeds on the leaves of a special kind that makes it sleepy.

The reason Jackie and her fellow koalas are repeatedly awoken from their deep sleep is so they can be hugged and photographed by tourists, who make the trips to Featherdale and an increasing number of other national parks for just that special experience. Whatever department in the Aussie government in charge of such things is now moving to make the practice illegal, which is understandable. How would you react, my friend, if you were trying to sleep off a dozen times and some round, furry creature smelling of grass kept waking you?

*考拉即树袋熊

【写作内容】 1. 以约30个词概括这段短文的内容;

2. 然后以约120个词就“该不该禁止游客和动物拍照”进行议论, 内容包括:

(1) 人们在参观动物园时为什么喜欢和动物拍照;

(2) 假如你处在那些动物的处境, 你会有什么反应;

(3) 你认为是否应该禁止游客和动物拍照。

III. 读写任务

【参考范文1】

The passage narrates that koalas who are repeatedly awoken from their deep sleep are unhappy and complaining for tourists taking photos. The author appeals to us to be more kind to animals.

The reasons why tourists like taking photos of the animals in the zoo perhaps vary from people to people. Some think it a happy reminder of their visit to the zoo or the animals, while others may consider it just sort of fun to have. But anyway they may not share the deep feelings of the animals.

If I were in the same position as the animal in the zoo, my reaction would be very severe strongly against being photographed. Not having peaceful surroundings to sleep, don’t you suffer restless and fidgets. No doubt we do and so do the animals.

I think it necessary to ban tourists’ taking pictures with animals, making a comfortable environment for them to live and regarding them as our friends, so as to found harmonious relations with animals.

【参考范文2】

The author mainly states that the sleeping koalas feel annoyed and unhappy because the tourists frequently awake them through hugging and photographing them, and he asks how the readers feel about it.

As far as I am concerned, it’s acceptable for tourists to take photos with the animals, of course the cute and friendly ones, but within boundaries. First and foremost, people are fond of photographing with animals, especially the kids, which ranks first among the reasons why they prefer to enjoy themselves in zoos. Besides, it is obvious that the zoos are willing to attract the tourists through that, and even earn extra money. What’s more, the zoos should be the communities provided for animals and tourists to be delighted together, instead of shelters only for animals to hide or to be watched at distance. However, the animals are of different kinds, one loving being photographed with people while another hating it, so before you take photos, you must make sure you have chosen the right animals as well as the right time.

Supposing we were the animals, due to the boring life in the cages day after day, I would rather enjoy being photographed with someone who gets close to me or hug me. There is no doubt that it would enrich my life, providing me the opportunity to know better about the human and more importantly, to make more friends of new faces. That’s exactly what I am always dreaming about!

【高考满分作文】Should tourists take photos with animals?

Koalas in wildlife parks can’t fall asleep because tourists keep di sturbing them. The

movement is thinking to make the tourists’ behavior illegal to protect the animals.

When people are visiting wildlife parks, they like to take photographs with animals. Reasons for this are varied. Some people may think taking photos with animals are funny in contrast with taking photos with other persons. Others may think that it will be an interesting experience to take photos with animals during their visit.

If I were an animal in the wildlife park,I would feel annoyed when people keep photographing with me. My life would be greatly influenced and I wouldn’t feel happy at all! I think I should have some private space and time to relax myself.

However,I don’t agree if it is announced illegal to take photos with animals. Tourists p ay for tickets to visit the wildlife park and it will be a pity for them if they can’t have a photo with an animal. Perhaps wildlife parks can set some special time, during which tourists can take photos with animals. It can both satisfy tourists and protect the animals.

During every visit I found my way into a big reading room to touch a great and ancient globe sitting in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show. On Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section. I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the s helf that she’d written a lot of books, but I didn’t know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs: “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. “It’s so dreadful to be poor” sighed Med, looking down at her old dress. “I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all” added little Amy, with an injured sniff. “We have got Father and Mother and each other.” said Beth contentedly from her corner. I h ad decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women.I wouldn’t put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo, the heroine. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn’t Black: then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit(志趣相投的人). 21. What can be learned about the author’s father?

They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness". If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure. 1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________. A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to deal with sudden changes in life 2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________. A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs B. great fear over the mental disorder
