Dogs are a very popular pet in the United States. Most dogs just live with their families, but some dogs have very special jobs to do.

A very special group of dogs are known as “Therapy(治疗)Dogs.”These dogs are family pets with special training. The training allows them to go into public buildings and comfort people in need. The dogs are trained to be calm and quiet. Loud noises and unfamiliar places don’t frighten them. Therapy dogs can improve people’s health as well. Studies show that when people spend time with pet animals, their blood pressure and heart rates go down. They are calmer, and their mood improves.

Other therapy dogs work in schools and libraries. In one town in California, the local library has trained eight dogs to be children's reading friends. Their taste buds(味蕾) are used to the foods with strong flavors sold by today’s fast food shops such as McDonald’s, which make ordinary foods seem unattractive, especially to children who aren’t concerned about the nutritional value(营养价值) of what they eat. But serving fresh and healthy food is one of the best ways to make children know what they need to eat to keep healthy. Here’s some advice.

Research shows that to make our palate(味觉) get used to a new food, we need to taste it 8-10 times. Place small amounts of green beans, carrots on your child’s plate, add a little butter or sauce that your children help you prepare, and be patient. By tasting a food several times children generally get used to eating it, so don’t give it up if your children turn up their nose at a vegetable dish the first time you serve it.

Don’t force your children to eat what you have served. Invite them to have a taste, but don’t make it a big deal. The more you try to make your children do something, the more unwilling they may become. And be cautious about pleasing your children, promising dessert if they just eat three bites like taking medicine.

Mix your vegetable dishes by putting them in soups, covering them in a tasty sauce or cutting them into salads with a delicious dressing.
