Monologue

I arrived in the United States on February 5, 1996, and I remember my first day here very clearly. My friend was waiting for me when I got to New York. The weather was cold and it was snowing. My friend helped me find a hotel and he left because he had to go back to work.

After my friend left, I went to a restaurant to get something to eat. Because I couldn’t speak English, I couldn’t tell the waiter what I wanted. I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I wanted to see something on my first day. I knew I couldn’t but I wanted to try.

When I returned to the hotel, I couldn’t sleep. I thought about New York. It was a very big and interesting city with many tall and big buildings, and noisy with cars and busy people. I also decided right then that I had to learn to speak English.
