A

Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: it seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.

Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned over and then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke form the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practiced sewing machine.

Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.

To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious, but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dre ams are sometimes called ―secret messages to ourselves‖.

71. According to the passage, Elias Howe was ______.

A.the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleep

B.much more hard-working than other inventors

C.the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked

D.the only person at the time who know the value of dreams

72. The problem Howe was trying to solve was ______.

A.what kind of thread to use

B.how to design a needle which would not break

C.where to put the needle

D.how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle

73. Thomas Edison is spoken of because ______.

A.he also tried to invent a sewing machine

B.he got some of his ideas from dreams

C.he was one of Howe‘s best friends

D.he made a lot of great inventions

74. Dreams are sometimes ca lled ―secret messages to ourselves‖ because ______.

A.strange images are used to communicate ideas

B.images which have no meaning are used

C.we can never understand the real meaning

D.only specially trained people can understand them

Eye injuries from paintball games have increased among children, even as the protective equipment for the sport has improved, according to a study in the magazine Pediatrics published yesterday.

The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated the number of emergency room visits for eye injuries caused by paintballs at 545 in 2001 and more than 1,200 in 2003. More than 40 percent of those injuries were believed to involve children, the study said.

Paintballs are marble-sized capsules filled with water-soluble paint. They are fired at a speed of up to 300 feet a second, the study said. Being so small, they can fit inside the bones meant to protect the eye.

The study‖s author, Dr. David A. Listman of St. Barnabes Hospital in the Bronx, said paintball shopping centers had generally begun to sell full face masks, which have become more effective at protecting the eyes than earlier gear. But most injuries now occur in backyard play, which is more likely to involve teenagers or children. ―The injuries being seen are mostly in people who did not wear the proper, or for that matter, any safety equipment,‖ Dr. Listman said.

Those injuries can involve permanent damage to sight, he said.

Dr. Listman said he believed that paintball guns should be limited to certain places. In the absence of such action, parents should limit children‘s access to the guns and insist on proper

protection. Paintball guns ―should be treated with the same respect as any other firearm,‖ he said. ―These are the only guns that are made to shoot at your friends.‖

--From New York Times (February 6, 2004)

British potato farmers were taking to the streets to call for the expression ―couch potato‖ to be

struck from the dictionary on the grounds that it harms the vegetable‘s image.

The British Potato Council wants the Oxford English Dictionary to replace the expression with the term ―couch slouch‖, with protests planned outside parliament in London and the offices of Oxford University Press.

Kathryn Race, head of marketing at the Council, which represents some 4000 growers and processors, said the group had complained in writing to the OED but had yet to receive a response.

―We are trying to get rid of the image that potatoes are bad for you,‖ she said on Monday.

―The potato has had its knocks in the past. Of course it is not the Oxford English Dictionary‘s fault but we want to use another term than ?couch potato‘, because potatoes are naturally healthy.‖The OED says ―couch potato‖ originated as American slang, meaning ― a pe rson who spends leisure time passively or idly sitting around, especially watching television or video tapes.‖The Potato Council says its campaign has the backing of dieticians who say the vegetable is low in fat and high in vitamin C.

Supporting the campaign, celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson said the vegetable was one of Britain‘s favorite foods.

―Not only are they healthy, they are versatile, convenient and taste great, too. Life without potato is like a sandwich without a filling,‖ he said.

John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, said the dictionary first included the term ―couch potato‖ in 1993 and said ― dictionaries just reflect the words that society uses.‖Simpson said words were never taken out of the fulllength dictionary, which includes some 650 000 words contained in 20 volumes.

But little-used words can be removed from the smaller dictionaries to make way for newer ones.

―If society stops using words, then they are taken out of the smaller dictionaries,‖ he added.

―The first known recorded use of the expression ?couch potato‘ was in a 1979 Los Angeles Times article,‖ Simpson said.

Nigel Evans, a member of parliament for the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, has made a motion in support of the campaign, highlighting the nutritional value of the British potato.

E

Ecotourism

The latest buzzword in the tourism industry is ―ecotourism‖—responsible, environmentally sound vacationing. Ecotourism, or ―green tourism,‖ means taking care of natural resources, protecting endangered species, and preserving and contributing to local communities.

Armed with this ―checklist‖, I booked a vacation in an ―ecoresort‖(resort:a place for vacation). The brochure looked appealing---a hotel right on the beach, with a large swimming pool and golf course, in acres of unspoiled rain forest.

Unfortunately, the only way to get to this resort was a 12-hour flight followed by a long taxi ride. I was relieved to see the hotel at the end of the road. It was a low-rise building, made out of local stone. But as I later found out, in order to build the resort, the wealthy owner had bought up 30,000 square kilometers of unspoiled rain-forest.

Sunbathing by the glorious swimming pool, enjoying the sound of sprinklers on the golf course, I suddenly realized that this was an area where water is scarce.

So far, not so eco-friendly. I decided to try some of the trips to nearby conservation projects, to give the resort another chance to convince me.

Although it was the breeding season for turtles, we didn‘t see any. Apparently the large groups of tourists who arrive at the beach to see the turtles laying their eggs have driven the turtles away. A

boat ride to a marine park was also disappointing. The noise of the boats means that the alligators (短吻鳄) are afraid to lie in the sun. The tourists, expecting to see some action, throw stones at the alligators in the water, in the hope of getting them to move.

The trip to the ―authentic‖ local village was pleasant. The resort has turned the local homes into picturesque cottages. However, they are so charming that tourists are buying them, and the locals now live in small towns of badly built houses in the poorest areas of town.

All in all, my vacation didn‘t meet any of the standards for ecotourism. But there are many projects around the wo rld where you can have a genuinely ―green ‖ experience. My next trip is to a mountain village, as a paying guest in a local family‘s home.

I will miss the swimming pool and the golf, though.

87. What does the word brochure in the second paragraph mean?

A. an interesting film

B. a travel agent

C. an advertisement

D. a mountain

88. Why were there no turtles on the beach?

A. Because tourists have caused the turtles to stay away.

B. Because tourists throw stones at them.

C. Because the noise of the boats has made them afraid.

D. Because the tourists take away their eggs

89. According to your understanding, what will the writer think about ―ecotourism‖ after this trip?

A. He thinks it as a brilliant idea.

B. He likes the swimming pool and the golf course.

C. He is disappointed and will have some doubts about it.

D. He will still strongly support ―ecotourism‖.

90.The word ―buzzword‖ (Paragraph1) means all of the following EXCEPT_________.

A. a word that cause a lot of trouble

B. a word well-known

C. a word often used

D. a word people think very important

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people.

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska
