Passage 2 植物灯

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.

Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology(UT)in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.

While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food(using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce electrons —the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can

power a 50-watt LED light for two hours—enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.

The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

Passage 3 自洁服装

Some days, don't you think,“Wouldn't it be nice if the laundry(洗衣)would just do itself?” Self-cleaning clothes may sound crazy. But Australian researchers have found a way to make something like this possible!

A team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, found a way to put special nanostructures(纳米结构)into clothing, which can then clean the clothes. When sunlight hits the nanostructures, they break down the dirt and stains(污渍)that don't belong on your clothes.

The nanostructures don't break down the actual clothing because cotton and the other clothing materials are too strong to be broken down. According to CNN, the researchers cover the clothing in a solution made of silver and copper(铜)nanostuctures. All it takes is 40 minutes of sunlight and your clothes will look as good as new.

So if you spill on yourself during lunch, you can step outside for a walk, and it will be clean by the time you go inside. It not only makes your life easier, but it can also be good for the environment.

According to the US Department of Energy, the average load of laundry uses about 25 gallons(about 94 liters)of water. Water is a very important resource, so using less of it to wash clothes is better for the environment. But one of the scientists at RMIT University knows more needs to be done.

“There's more work to do before we can start throwing out our washing machines,”said Dr Rajesh Ramanathan,“but this is a strong foundation(基础).”

So what's the next step? Ramanathan wants to either start selling the solution by itself or convincing (说服)clothing makers to treat the clothing with the solution while clothes are being made.

1.How do the clothing with the nanostructures get cleaned?

A. Cotton clothes wash easily.

B. This kind of clothing washes it by itself.

C. The dirt and stains are broken down in the sunlight.

D. Silver and copper help to get off the dirt in the dark.

2. What do Paragraphs 4-5 mainly talk about?

Passage 9 母亲的书桌

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it. Mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the action of

writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she just did it. But as a young girl, I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易感动的)”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”.As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive(原谅)me.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

But the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. It was my letter.

Passage 23 二胎政策的好处

China is a great country with the largest population in the world. In order to solve the population problem, our government carried out one-child policy (政策)before. When it is carried out for some time, many people not only see its advantages but also disadvantages.

From 2016, two-child policy is put into effect. In my opinion, two-child policy is good. First of all, two-child policy is the gift for some only child. For some families, maybe the parents are only child and they also can have only child. Besides the loneliness of their child, when their child grows up and they grow older, their child marries an only child girl, the burden (负担)on their child and his wife is too heavy. Their child and his wife have to take care of two couples. Usually, a young couple looking after an old couple is a little difficult. But if their parents have two children, they can share the burden of taking care of their parents. It would be much better. Secondly, two-child policy can guarantee(保证)the number of Chinese population.

All in all, one-child policy has been out of date. And two-child policy is needed and necessary. It can solve the problems of nowadays(现在)and the future.

Passage 24 如何应对校园暴力?

Every school seems to have a “bully”(欺凌). In fact, bullying goes on in schools all over the world. Bullying is a common situation at school. We need to get to know more about bullying.

Who gets picked on(被选择)? Bullies pick on people they think don't fit in—someone who “looks different” or isn't as “smart” or as “rich”. For example, shy kids often get picked on because of their characters. Physically hitting someone is the most obvious(明显的)form of bullying, but insulting(侮辱), gossiping(说闲话)and making fun of others are also usual forms of bullying.

What can you do to stop bullying? If you are the bully, think about how your actions hurt others. You can't build yourself up by putting others down. When you're feeling stressed or angry, find acceptable ways to deal with your frustrations.

If you are the victim(受害者), tell a trusted adult and get some help. Many times adults can find ways to solve the problem. Here is some wise advice:

●Ignore(忽略the bully and walk away.

●Hold your temper(脾气). Maybe the bully wants you to explode(发怒).

●Don't fight physically. It may lead to more vi olence(暴力).

●Practice confidence even if you have to pretend it.

B. Don't talk to parents about it directly.

C. Make more good friends at school.

D. Fight physically if he or she can't hold temper.

Passage 25 在网络平台“晒食物”的坏处

We can't remember clearly since when we started to take our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks, we take out our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or Wechat, waiting to be “liked”. Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to see whether we get “liked” or not. We just cannot leave our mobiles for only a meal.

Does that sound familiar to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?

A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. As a result, it showed that the more photos they took, ________. So, why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?

Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control himself and check his mobile many times. “Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!” It seems that your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.

So, next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? Let the food be delicious as it is and share your life with people around you. Trust me, it will be a wonderful time.

1. From the passage, what happens a lot at the dinner table nowadays?

B. People learn from each other how to cook dishes.

A. the less cheerful they became

B. the less delicious the food seemed to them

C. the more interested they were in the food

D. the more “liked” they got on Weibo or Wechat

3.The fourth paragraph talks about________.

A. the reasons for checking your mobiles

B. the ways of posting the photos onto the Internet

C. the tips(提示)of making others like your photos on the Weibo

D. some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals

4. Which of the following is the writer's opinion?

A. We take our mobiles and click when a dish comes.

B. We check our mobiles from time to time during the meal.

C. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant.

D. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food.

Passage 26 触摸的意义

If you want to see a thing well, touching can help you to “see” it better.

Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass ball is. When you learn all these about the ball, you really see it well.

With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the differences between two different coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.

All children soon learn what “Don't touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things that we might buy. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or hard floor. All feel different under your feet.

Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do tou ch!” There you can feel everything on show.

There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body and the air on your skin.

If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!
