Today we all live in an increasingly culturally diverse world. Each year thousands, if not millions, of people leave their homes to work abroad and almost every company no matter where you live, will employ people from other countries or cultures.

Sadly, not everyone has the skills in interacting with people from other cultures. In a company, bad interaction between cultures leads to loss of productivity and can have a very bad impact on company morale.

Let's have a look at different types of cross-cultural training that exists to make sure

that we can all get along in the work place:

Diversity training is not a new idea. Diversity trainers use their expertise in:

conflict resolution,

preparing organizations for increases in racial, ethnic, cultural, and gender diversity, preparing employees for international work,

safeguarding against harassment and unfair employment lawsuits,

taking advantage of employee diversity to increase productivity,

conducting cultural audits,

managing sexual attraction in the workplace,

developing competencies needed to exploit the international marketplace.

Diversity training has existed for quite a while in some form or another, although

different labels were used to refer to it. Perhaps the most globally shared label is cross-cultural training.

Race relations training and multicultural education are common labels used in the United States. As the labels suggest, diversity training aims to combat racism, sexism, exclusion, and ethnocentrism.

Diversity training aims to give individuals and companies a competitive edge in an increasingly global community. Diversity courses provide people with the skills they need to get the most out of interactions with people of a different race, gender, or nationality.

Multicultural training focuses on educating people to understand and appreciate cultural differences. Diversity training focuses on building community rather than pointing out how people are different.

Appreciation of differences is important, but it is not considered the highest priority competency. The abilities to make others comfortable and included are most important, no matter how much you know about their culture.

Cross-cultural training focuses on educating people to manage themselves in other countries or as a minority in another cultural group. Diversity training provides knowledge and skills to manage cultural differences that exist in one's own country and in others.

Diversity also includes gender, sexual preference, religion, and other types of diversity that are not central in cross-cultural training.

Race relations training focuses on educating people to understand and appreciate racial differences, and helping different races get along. Race refers to skin color differences in the United States while Europeans tend to include nationality in their definition. American race relations trainers often assume that White American privilege is a central problem in addressing racism.

Diversity training includes race relations while addresses the general problem of dealing with people who are different. Institutional barriers are considered without placing blame on individuals.

THE ART OF PERSUASION 'Let me send you our brochure'is probably the most commonly used phrase in business. But all too often,it can spell the end of a customer enquiry because many brochures appear to be produced not to clarify and to excite but to confuse. So what goes wrong and how can it be put right?Too often, businesses fail to ask themselves critical questions like,'Who will the brochure be sent to?''What do we want to achieve with it?'The truth is that a brochure has usually been produced for no other reason than that the competition has one. However, with a little research,it often transpires that what the client wants is a mixture:part mail shot, part glossy corporate brochure and part product catalogue-a combination rarely found. Having said that, the budget is likely to be finite. There may not be enough money to meet all three marketing needs,so the first task is to plan the brochure, taking into account the most significant of these. The other requirements will have to be met in a different way. After all, introducing the company's product range to new customers by mail is a different task from selling a new season's collection to existing customers.

S. begin to realise that investors demand financial reporting to be truly presented: creative accounting is no longer acceptable. In response to the criticism about how it booked the gain on the sale of one of its businesses. IBM announced on Feb. 19th that it would expand the informaton it provides investors on such things as its intellectual-property income and the impact on earnings of the company's overfunded pension plan. And a day later, General Electric Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Jeffrey R. Immelt also pay heed to investors' calls for better disclosure by promising to provide more detail on how the company's individual units —including its finance departrment. GE Capital —churn out their earnings. B Expect this lifting of the veil to spread rapidly throughout corporate America, In the wake of Enron's collapse and questionable accounting at telecommunications companies such as Global Crossing Ltd., investors are demanding better. more frequent, and more expansive information about companies' financial health. This rising pressure will force executives in boardrooms across the country to wrestle with exactly how much new information to reveal, much less the question of how to flag changes for investors without causing their stocks to tank. "GE and IBM are bellwethers," says Patrick S. McGurn, vice-president at proxy advisory service Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. "You will see a huge wave of imitation." C Of course, that's good for shareholders —and for the long-term health of the market, But the tsunami of new disclosures, unfortunately, isn't necessarily what the recovering economy needs right now. The trick will be to strike the right balance. Companies that reveal too little, too late will get punished in the market. But dumping too much on shareholders may only muddy the picture further. "If you give too much information, people can get overwhelmed by the minutia, and the important stuff gets buried." says Charles M. Elson, director of the Centre for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware. D In fact, IBM and G E join a growing list of companies that have already been compelled to improve their disclosure, At Tyco International Ltd., which has been buffeted by concerns about its complex accounting and financial health, senior execs have begun holding weekly phone conferences with analysts and investors to address questions about its accounting and operations.

It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarification - it is always better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong它可能意味着为了进一步的信息和说明去询问说话的人——问总比不顾情况的继续并且把事情办错的好。 The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject long before the other speaker has finished。 这里的before the other speaker has finished就是others are still speaking, focus on your response 就是start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject。 Too often we accuse others of not listening, pretending that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we haven't listened carefully enough。 Equally importantly you should put yourself in the other person's place, both intellectually and emotionally。 这里的put yourself in other person’s plac e就是seeing things from the speaker’s perspective。
