第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
A Samoan airline says that it is the world’s f irst carrier to charge passengers by their weight. Samoa Air, which opened in 2012, asks passengers to give their personal weight during booking, which is then charged according to the length of a flight. The customers will also be weighed just before they board the plane.
"It is believed that all people throughout the world are the same size," Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton said. "Airplanes always run on weight, not seats."
"There is no doubt in my mind that this is the concept of the future. This is the fairest way of your travelling with your family or yourself."
Though the airline introduced the plan last November, it caught people's attention last week when the carrier began international flights to neighboring American Samoa.
Almost at the same time, a Norwegian economist, Bharat Bhatta, published a report suggesting that airlines should charge obese(过度肥胖的)passengers more.
The Pacific Islands contain some of the world’s most common countries for obesity, many ranking in the top 10, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Samoa is ranked number four, with 59.6 percent of the population considered obese, said the most recent WHO report.
According to Samoa Air's latest schedule, the airline charges up to $0.57 per kg for flights in Samoa and $1.03 per kg for its only international flight to American Samoa, around 250 miles.
Children under 12 are charged 75 percent of the adult rate, with fares also based on weight. Any overweight baggage is calculated at the same rate as the passenger's personal weight.
The plan could actually prove cheaper in some cases, such as for families travelling with small children, and Langton said customer reaction has mainly been "amazingly positive".
The idea of charging passengers by weight has been hotly discussed before, and in the US
some airlines require those who do not fit into a seat comfortably to buy a second seat.
21. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Airlines should charge passengers by flight length.
B. All people throughout the world are the same size.
C. It is unfair to weigh passengers at the airport.
D. Airplanes always run on weight, not seats.
22. In Bharat Bhatta’s eyes, Samoa Air's plan might be _______.
A. funny
B. acceptable
C. strange
D. disappointing
23. A 100 kg adult flying to American Samoa would be charged _______.
A. $57
B. $75
C. $103
D. $125
24. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. 59.6% of Samoans are considered obese.
B. Samoa Air introduces pay-by-weight pricing.
C. Airlines should charge obese passengers more.
D. Baggage must be calculated as passengers’ weight.

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of sparkling stars.
You can see even more with a telescope. You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescope you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail.
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year.
That’s because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.
As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes(挤) into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball called a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the Earth were crushed(挤压) until it was the size of a tiny marble(弹球). That’s how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in towards its center with such power? It’s the same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything – even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness.
So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than meets the eyes! Scattered(散开) in the silent darkness are black holes – the great mystery of space.
25. According to the article, what causes a star to die?
A. As its gases run out, it cools down.
B. It crashes into other stars.
C. It can only live for about a million years.
D. As it gets hotter and hotter, it explodes.
26. Paragraph 6 and Paragraph 7 mainly tells us ______.
A. what a black hole is
B. why we can’t see black holes
C. black holes have enormous gravity
D. the formation of black holes
27. What happens AFTER a star dies?
A. It burns up all of its gases.
B. It becomes invisible.
C. It falls to Earth.
D. It becomes brighter and easier to see.
28. Why can’t you see light when you look at a black hole?
A. Most black holes are so far away.
B. Because the gravity of a black hole is so strong that it sucks the light inward.
C. Because as the star’s gases burn, it stops giving off heat and light.
D. Because as a star cools, its outer layers pull in toward its center.

Moving to a new city and state was difficult for me, especially in winter. Little did I know that a Colorado snowstorm would greet me after I had been in my new home for only a week.
I just missed home. But more than the old house and the beach, I missed Stacey, my best friend. And I missed our lovely tea. Going to a sweet little tearoom, we had discovered a special
treat for us. The place was a Victorian dream, with delicate teacups and tablecloths with flower prints. The hat shelf near the front door swept us back to childhood. Stacey and I became little girls, trying on different hats until we found the perfect one for our dress-up tea party. We would then choose a lovely table and order our tea. That was a precious time, filled with laughter between scones(煎饼)and sharing our lives between tiny cucumber sandwiches.
Springtime descended upon Denver, and the sun lightened my heart. But I still fought loneliness almost every day. I decided to explore the Denver area. While my husband went to the office, I took time to see what our new area had to offer.
One day, I was walking along the street when suddenly the words "Tea Leaves" caught my eye. A tea room? Here, in the land of loneliness and pain?
I walked through the doors, and tears came to my eyes. It was a beautiful room, not Victorian, but simple and lovely.
I sat down and ordered a pot of tea, a cucumber sandwich, and some scones. It felt silly and wonderful -- and it felt like home. For the first time since moving, I felt as if this new city and state could be, would eventually be, my home. I would come back here and bring new friends. When Stacey visited, we would come here.
I lifted my cup and made a silent toast. I toasted Stacey, whom I missed, and I toasted the sweet little tearoom that lessened my pain.
29. The underlined word "treat" in Paragraph 2 probable means ____________.

Anna Craig, 11, has a paper doll covered with stickers. Each sticker is labeled with a word such as creative, cheerful, smart or kind. ―We choose stickers that best describe us and put them on our dolls," explains Anna. "All these words are what makes me beautiful!"
The activity is part of a program called Beautiful Me. The Hance Family Foundation, which was created to honor three sisters killed in a car accident, offers the program for free to schools. The program’s goals are to help girls and young women build healthy levels of self-esteem and develop skills for handling problems and relationships with others. Beautiful Me explains that self-esteem means how you feel about yourself and what you think your value is as a person.
"Girls of all ages benefit from recognizing what makes each of us valuable and different," says Kate Tuffy, who helped create Beautiful Me. "Our goal is to offer the program to as many girls as possible across the United States." About 6,000 girls have benefited from it due to her efforts.
Beautiful Me organizers train teachers to present the program material to small groups of girls. It includes hands-on art activities, role-playing games about understanding body language and discussions on how to build friendships. Schools and groups present the program when they are ready.
"The Beautiful Me program helps girls understand their feelings, solve problems and get along better in and out of school. Girls and women who have built healthy levels of self-esteem are more likely to be better friends to others and know how to solve conflicts," says Tuffy.
Anna says she has learned all of that from the program. But most importantly, she has learned to appreciate the special qualities in people and that it’s important to feel good about yourself. "When you feel good about yourself," Anna says, "it is easy to make others feel good, too!
