The world's coral reefs(珊瑚礁)are increasingly being threatened, mostly because of human activities. A group of environmental organizations published a report about it. For the first time, it also considered the effect of climate change on these threatened sea organisms(生物体).

Jane Lubchenco is administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. She says the problem is serious. About 75 percent of the world's coral reefs are currently threatened by a combination of local and global pressures. Lubchenco says the threat to coral reefs will continue to increase unless something is done to save them.

Nancy Knowlton is with the Smithsonian Institution. She says the threat to coral reefs could have a major effect on sea life.

Millions of species of sea life depend on coral reefs for their survival. This makes them an important source of food for millions of people around the world.Coral reefs also protect coastlines from storms and

flooding. And, they provide economic security(安全) for many countries.

Lauretta Burke is with the World Resources Institute. She was one of the lead writers of the report. She says more than 275-million people are dependent on the resources from coral reefs, mostly in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.

The report noted overfishing and climate change as two of the most serious threats to the world's oceans.

Burke says while the reefs around Australia are the best preserved, those in Southeast Asia are the most threatened. Ninety percent of them are at risk, largely because of overfishing.

An analysis was done that suggests that one third of all coral species are actually at risk of extinction. This makes corals the most endangered animal on the planet.

The report says coral reefs are quite important. It says better management practices and policies must be established to reduce the threats to these valuable ecosystems(生态系统).

Eleven of the world's languages have at least one hundred million native speakers. The biggest are Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi. Next come Portuguese, Bengali, Russian, Japanese, French and German. The United Nations says these eleven languages are the mother

tongues of half the world's population.

Bud Lane works with linguist(语言学家) Gregory Anderson to record words for a talk dictionary. But the world has close to seven thousand languages. Linguists predict that quite a lot of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean another language dies every two weeks.

Members of the Siletz Indian tribe in the northwestern state of Oregon take pride in their language. Their language, they say, "is as old as time itself." But today very few people can speak it fluently. In fact, you can count the number of fluent speakers on one hand. Bud Lane is one of them. Several National Geographic Fellows helped him record fourteen thousand words and phrases in his native tongue. More than ten thousand entries(词条) can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary, first launched(推出) in 2007. Smartphone apps, YouTube videos and Facebook pages have all become digital tools for language activists and experts.

In Canada's far north, the Inuit people are struggling to preserve their native language, Inuktitut. Part of the effort involves Microsoft. The company is translating terms in its Windows operating system and Office software into Inuktitut. Microsoft has also worked with language activists in New Zealand, Spain and Wales to translate its software into Maori, Basque, Catalan and Welsh.

In Oregon, Bud Lane says technology alone cannot save endangered languages. He points to one sign of progress: young members of the tribe are now texting each other in tribal language.

1.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. The efforts to protect threatened languages.

B. The mother tongues of half the world’s population.

C. The disappearance of some tribal languages.

When many of us think of robots, we picture large, metal objects in the shape of humans, having difficulty moving around. But robots have come a long way. A team at Harvard University in Massachusetts recently developed a soft-bodied robot. The team based the design of its robot on sea creatures without hard shells or skeletons(骨架).

The robotic device was made with soft materials called

elastomers(弹性体). It is about thirteen centimeters long and has four legs that can move separately. The movements are controlled by compressed air and can be operated from a computer.

George Whitesides led the Harvard researchers. The United States Department of Defense paid for the project.

The robot itself took two months to develop. In tests, researchers have guided the robot under a plate of glass less than three centimeters high. The researchers say their invention can move at a speed of about thirteen meters an hour.

A report about the robot was published in November in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Increasingly, soft robots are being developed for difficult jobs like moving through a battlefield or wreckage(残骸) from a natural disaster. The robot can move across uneven surfaces including small rocks and wet dirt.

Earlier this year, scientists from Tufts University in Massachusetts developed another kind of soft robot made of silicone rubber(硅橡胶). This robot is about ten centimeters long and shaped like a caterpillar(毛毛虫). It is able to roll up into a ball shape and move itself forward.

But researchers say there are difficulties in making these robots move. For one, they want to find a way for the robot to transport its own power source. They are also hoping to improve its speed.

1. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The robots made of silicone rubber can move more easily than those made of metal.

B. A caterpillar can change its body like a ball and roll itself forward quickly.

C. The large metal robots in the shape of humans can’t be used to do some difficult jobs.

D. The soft robot developed by the Harvard researchers is useful after the earthquake.

2. The researchers at Harvard University came up with the idea of the soft-robots according to____

A. a science fiction

B. the animals under the sea

C. the aliens in the Mars

D. the balls in the playground

3. What does the underline word “uneven ” in the sixed paragraph probably mean?

A. Regular

B. Unsmooth

C. Polished

D. Flat

4. What should the researchers in Tufts University do more in the

development of the soft robot?

A. To raise more money for the research

B. To make the robot move more quickly

C. To make the robot useful in the emergency

D. To save the robot’s power and energy

5. We can infer that the author of the text is ____

A. objective in his introduction to the soft-bodied robot

B. curious about the future of the soft-bodied robot

C. doubtful about the speed of the soft-bodied robot

D. disappointed at the development of soft-bodied robot

When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined to a wheelchair. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of sitting there, he threw himself from the chair. He pulled himself across the grass, drawing his legs behind him. He worked his way to the white fence. With great effort, he raised himself up on the fence. Then, he began dragging himself along the fence, resolved that he would walk. Indeed, if we have been harmed, we should not forget it. We can learn from the past about how to avoid being harmed in the future. Nor is forgiveness a way of exonerating (免除责任) the one who has hurt us. We recognize that the harm did happen and the person must be responsible for this and must come to terms with their own guilt. When we forgive, we are not sacrificing anything or giving up our sense of self-worth. Indeed, we are doing just the opposite by taking a stand which says that we are strong and finally free of playing the role of victim. Forgiveness is a way of declaring our honesty. Forgiveness is a way of saying that the pain of the past should now be put behind me. Thus, forgiving is a reflection of positive self-esteem. It means that we have better things to do in life than continuing to live under the influence of the one who has caused us pain. Forgiveness signifies breaking the cycle of pain and abuse (辱骂), giving up the belief that the other person should hurt as much as we do. It means abandoning the myth that if we hurt the other person, it will make us feel better. Forgiveness implies giving up the unrealistic hope that an apology will
