Three months earlier, life could not have been any better. I had been chosen to play the role I wanted in our upcoming musical. This was a big accomplishment for any high school performer. However, it was a mix of feelings--I was suffering from cerebral palsy(大脑性麻痹).

One day, after our final dress rehearsal, I found myself standing backstage with Anthony, our director. The previews were happening the next day.

“I’m so afraid about tomorrow,” I started. “What if someone calls me Gimpy(瘸子)again? I don’t know if I

can handle it. It’s killing me!”

“But Annie,” he said, “why do you care what everyone out there thinks?” His question made me think: why did I care so much?

“Listen,” he went on, “go out there and forget about what every single person in the audience is thinking. You perform because it is what you love to do. So just go out there and make yourself happy.”

Those words rang in my ears for the rest of the night. “Make yourself happy.”

Anthony’s advice was so simple, yet so powerful. Somehow it helped me fin d the power to look at my situation differently. Whatever I look like, I still loved the feeling I had when I was performing. I was glad someone had faith that I could find it again.

The next morning, as I walked into the theater, Anthony looked at me with a smile and said, “Remember what I told you!” While I waited the wings, I whispered “Be happy.” to myself and let my mind go blank. The music started. I didn’t think, just performed, and I was once again blessed with the joy I thought I had lost. I consid er that afternoon to be one of my happiest moments because my heart felt ten pounds lighters as I walked off the stage.

Anthony’s words changed me and will always stay close to my heart. Every day I am grateful for the journey that helped me become a better, more positive person. One that began because of three simple words: make yourself happy.

27. What does the underlined word “one” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. My heart.

B. A. A person.

C. Every day.

C

More than 700 million people worldwide have trouble getting clean, safe water. That number comes from the Water Project, a non-profit group. It estimates that one in nine people do not have access to safe and clean drinking water.

Governments, non-govermental organizations and charities sent representatives to Stockholm, Sweden earlier this month for World Water Week activities. The subject for this year’s water week campaign was “water and waste, reduce and reuse.”

The United States Geological Survey defines(定义)wastewater as used water. It is the water that comes out of pipes from people’s homes — from their bathrooms, washing machines and dishwashers. Todd Gartner of the World Resources Institute spoke with VOA from Stockholm by Skype. He says only a small amount of wastewater is being reused for other purposes. “Even for drinking water, there are a lot of places where they are treating the water to drinkable standards.”

Treating wastewater is good for human beings because it provides fresh water for us. But it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. “Eighty percent of wastewater around the world is not treated at all. It means that it is running into oceans and bays.”

Todd Gartner believes there are two kinds of solutions. One is low technology, like reforestation, or planting trees, and fixing pipes that leak. More high-tech solutions include better watering methods for agriculture, and factories to remove salt from salt water.

On average, the world uses about 10 billion tons of water a day. And while 75 percent of our planet is covered with water, only about two percent is fresh water — that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98 percent of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. This is where desalination businesses come in. Scientists say finding a less costly desalination process would mean less pressure on natural sources of clean water.

And Todd Gartner says everyone should have access to clean water. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.

28. What does wastewater mentioned in the article refer to?

A. Undrinkable water.

B. Used water in daily life.

C. Water from chemical plants.

D. Polluted water from rivers.

29. In this article, what does the un derlined word “desalination” mean?

A. Drying sea water.

B. Absorbing waste in water.

C. Making sea water salty.

D. Making sea water drinkable.

30. Which is the best title for this article?

A. World Water Week Activities

B. Methods of Treating Wastewater

C. Water and Waste, Reduce and Reuse

D. Finding Solutions for World Water Shortage

31. How is the writing tone of the author?

A. Objective.

B. Critical.

C. Subjective.

D. Persuasive.

D

By now, you’ve probably been warned that a robot is coming for your job. But rather than repeat the warning, I’ve decided to throw down a challenge: man against machine.

Start with the task we’re engaged in right now: communicating in fluent human. We’re sharing abstract ideas through words that we choose with an understan ding of their difference and impact. We don’t just speak in human, we speak as humans.

Here’s another inbuilt advantage we take for granted: as humans we are limited by design. We are bound in time: we die. We are bound in space: we can’t be in more than o ne place at a time.

That means that when I speak to an audience, I am giving them something special. It’s a custom-made, one-off, 100% robot-free delivery, from today’s one-and-only Australian Chief Scientist.

Digital Alan seems to increase the appetite for human Alan, just as Spotify can boost the demand for a musician’s live performances.

Thanks to technology, many goods and services are cheaper, better and more accessible than ever before. We like our on-tap lectures and our automated FitBit advice.

Onli ne courses haven’t killed the bricks-and-mortar university. FitBit hasn’t killed the personal trainer. On the contrary, they’re all booming.

Here’s a third argument for the win. We humans have learned the habit of civilisation. Let me illustrate this point by a story.

A few years ago, some researchers set out to investigate the way that people interact with robots. They sent out a small robot to patrol(巡逻)the local mall. That robot had a terrible time – and the villains of the story were children. They kicked him, bullied him, smacked him in the head.

The point is not that the children were violent. The point is that the adults were not. They controlled whatever primitive impulse(原始冲动)they might have felt in childhood to smack something smaller and weaker in the head. We call it civilization

Together, these points suggest to me that humanity has a powerful competitive edge. We can coexist with our increasingly capable machines and we can make space for the full breadth of human talents to flourish.

32. What’s human’s second advantage according to the author?

A. Our language ability.

B. Our unique existence.

C. Our super intelligence.

D. Our special personality.

33. What’s the author’s attitude towards Spotify and FitBit?

A. Negative.

B. Doubtful.

C. Confused.

D. Grateful.

34. Why does the author tell the story of a small robot?

A. To prove humans can be educated well.

B. To show children are naughty in nature.

C. To suggest machines will become violent.

D. To indicate machines aren’t that dangerous.

35. What’s the author’s final conclusion about humans and machines?

A. We’ll live in harmony with each other.

B. Both sides will be losers in the fight.

C. Humans will completely defeat machines.

D. Machines will replace humans in many fields.
