1.★★★★★

My favorite shoes! I’ve been to many conferences where my business fellows have told me how much they like my shoes. Just wearing them makes me feel more calm and content in the office. I recommend them to all of my co-workers, and

I own a pair of each color.

2.★

These are the worst shoes I have ever worn! The leather came off after only one week, and everybody thought they were ugly. The bottom of the shoes made everything slippery. My employer fired me because he hated them! From then on,

I will only wear Brand X shoes!

3.★★★

These shoes do exactly what shoes are supposed to do. There isn’t anything too special about them. In the morning, I put them on and go about my day. They look delightful enough, and they are quite durable. I will probably buy another pair.

4.★★★★

These shoes are my most cherished possession. I met my bride while buying a pair of these shoes. She was the saleswoman at the store I bought them at, and after she sold me three pairs, I asked her for her phone number and we started dating. Soon after that, we were engaged. John Logie Baird will always be remembered as the man who invented television.

Baird was born on August 14, 1888. During the early 1920s, John Logie Baird had a small laboratory in the seaside town of Hastings. It was in that laboratory that he first succeeded in projecting a moving figure across the walls.

Unfortunately, during a later experiment he got a shock. Not only did this leave him shaken, but it also blew out the fuse(保险丝) box in the entire building. The owner of the house had been suspicious of the strange goings on in the curious Scottish man’s apartment and he was politely asked to leave. After that he moved to a department in Soho, London and continued his experiments.

Success finally smiled on him and on October 25, 1925 he was able to transmit his first moving image. This was the first time that any such success had been achieved. Unfortunately, his eyes were the only ones to witness it at the time. He called his new invention “the televisor”. On June 16, 1926 he showed his first work to an audience of interested witnesses. But none of them imagined just what an impact his invention would have on the modern world.

Over the following years, Baird worked hard for further improvement. He managed to transmit images over longer distances, achieving the first transatlantic broadcast in 1928. He became the pioneer of color television, too. He showed the first experimental color television images as early as 1928. By 1930 he had managed to develop a system for broadcasting simultaneous (同时发生的) sound along with the images. Television had truly been born. Baird continued to make many important contributions to the development of television. In 1944 he presented the first color television set to the world.

He died on June 14, 1946. His invention completely transformed how we communicate, how we see each other and the world and how we spend our time.

24. What happened after Braird got a shock during an experiment?

A. He was too frightened to carry on with his experiments.

B. The owner of the house began to suspect him..

C. He politely asked for his neighbors’ forgiveness.

D. He was driven out of the apartment in which he lived.

A. Baird had sharp eyes for detail.

B. He couldn’t believe what he saw.

C. Baird was the only one witnessing the great success.

D. Baird was too surprised to say a word.

There is one all-important law of human conduct. If we obey that law, we shall almost never get into trouble. In fact, that law, if obeyed, will bring us countless friends and constant happiness. But the very instant we break the law; we shall get into endless trouble. The law is this: Always make the other person feel important. John Dewey, as we have already noted, said that the desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature; and William James said: “The deepest principle in human nature is the wish to be appreciated.” As I have already pointed out, it is this urge that distinguishes us from the animals. It is this urge that has been responsible for civilization itself.

Philosophers have been speculating on the rules of human relationships for thousands of years, and out of all that speculation, there has evolved only one important precept(准则). It is not new. It is as old as history. Zoroaster taught it to his followers in Persia twenty-five hundred years ago. Confucius preached (宣扬) it in China twenty-four centuries ago. Lao-tse, the founder of Taoism, taught it to his disciples in the Valley of the Han. Jesus summed it up in one thought---probably the most important rule in the world: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

You want the approval of those with whom you come in contact. You want recognition of your true worth. You want a feeling that you are important in your little world. You don’t want to listen to cheap, insincere flattery, but you do crave sincere appreciation. You want your friends and associates to be, as Charles Schwab put it, “hearty in their appreciation and generous in their praise.”A ll of us want that.

So let’s obey the Golden Rule, and give unto others what we would have others give unto us, how? When? Where? The answer is: All the time, everywhere.

28. What makes us different from the animals according to the author?

A. The urge to appreciate others.

B. The desire to be important.

C. The ability to use languages.

D. The wish to achieve success.

29. The author develops the second paragraph mainly by __________.

A. listing some research results

B. analyzing some theories

C. providing some examples

D. using some famous sayings

30. What’s the aim of the last paragraph?

A. To look for solution.

B. To draw a conclusion.

C. To give some questions.

D. To appeal to action.

31. Which of the following proverbs can best summarize the main idea of the passage?

A. Love will find a way

B. Do as you would be done by

C. Live and let live

D. Nothing can challenge a kind man.

Most people feel terrible when they hear the sound of fingernails scratching a blackboard, or a knife scratching a plate. While there isn’t an English word to describe this feeling, Spanish speakers have a specific word for the feeling: grima. Grima can provoke physiological responses such as an increase in the heart rate, and it is so unique that psychologists now say it is an emotional experience rather than a reflex --- and as such, it could be treatable.

Dr Inge Schweiger Gallo is a researcher at Complutense University of Madrid and lead author of the study. Dr Gallo and her team of researchers began their study by asking Spanish speakers what the word grima means to them. Most people described it as an ‘unpleasant feeling’ and also used words such as ‘shivering,’‘sounds’and ‘repulsion’. Grima feelings can be caused by squeaking sounds,, scratching things with fingernails and scratching surfaces.

The Spanish participants were then asked to try to suppress(抑制) their responses to grima sounds. These participants then rated grima sounds as less unpleasant than before, but their ratings for ‘disgusting’ sounds didn’t change. The researchers said that this suggests reactions to grima sounds aren’t a reflex like they are for ‘disgusting’sounds, but are instead an emotional experience that can be influenced by thought.

So, while grima has similarities to disgust, its triggers(诱因) and effect on the body are different, and grima also has an effect on people who don’t have a word for it in their own language. And although grima is mostly associated with certain sounds, it can also be triggered by the feel of certain materials such as rubber, velvet(红丝绒) or sponges.

A 2012 study found that sounds in this range activate a part of the brain called the amygdala, which is involved in fearful responses and increases activity in the auditory cortex(听觉皮层)。Another reason why grima sounds trigger such strong responses is that they sound rough and have the same effect as when a person screams.

B. a reflex to the sounds of something scratching another thing

34. From the research, we can learn all of the following things EXCEPT that __________.

D. people who suppress their responses to grima sounds feel less disgusted

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska

A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
