The story mainly describes the talk between a girl of favourable image but firm sipirit and her fiance who is weak in personality on the planning of future life and job.The girl stakes her future on a writer’s career with the belief of her acute observation,however,the ignorance of the eight Japanese gentlemen around her just proves it wrong.So,this raises the author’s sympathy and great concern on the girl in the position of a vetaran writer and he hopes her to find a better career than writing.

W e can actually classify five characters from the article,they are the girl,the girl’s fiance,the publisher Dwight ,the narrator and the eight Japanese gentlemen.The girl who is pretty,attractive and also firm in spirit is the main character,she firmly believes her acute observasion because of the publisher Dwight’s exaggerate admiration,and she plans to spend her future life with her fiance both in the career of writing.However,her fiance is not quite interested in writing and doubts if they should really rely on the girl’s professional prospect and talent,he prefers a duller but safer life as a wine trading businessman,and this caused the girl who is aggressively self-assertive angry at him.

The story unfods with the presence of the eight Janpanese gentlemen in the perspective of the narrator who is a veteran writer about the girl’s mother’s age.As an experienced writer,the narration clearly notice those eight gentlemen and even the talking between the girl and her fiance,however,the girl who insits on her keen observation ignores everything even though having looked at them on a number of occasions.And this raises the narrators sympathy on her ,since he knows clearly what writing actually is,hard,demanding and requires great power of observation,obviously,the girl not up to the job,so he advises “she deserves a better job.”

Meanwhile,the man is described as weak in personality which serves as a perfect foil for the girl’s strong character.And the title of the article is epitomize the fact tha the girl’s exaggerated powers of observation are set well apart from a true writer’s watchfulness.
