Passage 1

Making foreign friend

With her black hair and pink cheeks (面颊), Chibi Maruko-chan is one of the most famous Japanese cartoon characters of all time.

On Sept 23, the new movie Chibi Maruko-chan: A Boy from Italy (《樱桃小丸子:来自意大利的少年》) hit Chinese theaters.

It begins with six international students coming to visit Maruko’s school. When Maruko is introduced, Andrea, a boy from Italy, asks to stay at her home. Andrea comes to Japan because he wants to find some of his uncle Marco’s old friends in Osaka, and luckily, Maruko’s school is going on a trip to that area.

“The movie not only explores international friendships, but also follows the search for Marco’s friends. In addition, it is about understanding a nd dealing with loss,” commented the Toho Kingdom website.

Chibi Maruko-chan always has something to share. Written and illustrated (绘图) by Momoko Sakura, the original cartoon series shows the everyday life of Maruko and her family. Maruko, a 9-year-old schoolgirl, lives with her parents, her grandparents and her older sister. Like many kids, she is lazy, disorganized and usually late for school, while her older sister is neat, calm and tidy. To avoid doing homework and chores, she always takes advantage of (利用) her grandfather’s kindness and argues with her sister.

Jun Takagi, director of the TV anime (动画), believes it’s Maruko’s casual (随意的) lifestyle that continues to make her popular. “Maruko is a tomboy (假小子) who doesn’t do much for her appearance most of the time. And she doesn’t just talk like a girl or a boy,” he told The Asahi Shimbun newspaper. “So it’s easy for both boys and girls to feel close to her.”

But Maruko isn’t just for kids. She is part of Japan’s cute culture, which has also produced cha racters like Hello Kitty. “The country needs cute characters partly because its people are sad about their lost innocence (天真无邪), their childhoods stolen from them by the education system,” Japanese fashion consultant (顾问) Maiko Seki told the Tofugu website.

The warm family life shown in the anime has also added to the series’ charm. “The nuclear (核心的) family trend (趋势) is increasing in East Asian countries like Japan,” Hyun Moo-am, an associate professor (副教授) of media and culture at Hokkaido University, told The Asahi Shimbun newspaper. “People feel nostalgic (怀旧的) about the Chibi Maruko-chan family, in which three generations (代) live closely together.

Passage 2

Giving visitors art tour

Yin Zihao (far left) explains the Dunhuang Mural to visitors. PROVIDED TO 21ST

The Dunhuang Mural is one of the best pieces of ancient Chinese fine art. This summer, the exhibition (展览) of the mural was held at my high school – Qingdao No 2 Middle School. I was lucky enough to be chosen as a volunteer. While I was volunteering, I learned how to reflect (反映) on life as well as a lot of knowledge about the Dunhuang painting.

The most famous masterpiece (杰作) of the exhibition, Flying Fairies, is still fresh in my memory. In its pictures, fairies (仙女) spread sweet smells, throw petals (花瓣) and play traditional Chinese instruments to give everyone a peaceful feeling while the Buddha speaks. Wearing clothes that

look like clouds, fairies fly quickly in the sky and gather floating clouds together. What an amazing scene!

As a volunteer, it was my job to explain these well-chosen pieces of art to visitors, including the work I mentioned above. However, remembering my lines was really difficult, simply because the re were about 30 pieces of art in total. With my teacher Ms Ding’s help, I spent three hours a day reciting (背诵) the descriptions. And five days later, I was able to repeat (重复) everything from memory.

Then the exhibition began and I got down to work. Visitors all looked at me in surprise when I explained the art to them just like a professional guide, which made me feel proud.

Learning to do this challenging job was just the tip of an iceberg (冰山), but it still needed hard work and patience (耐心). The same thing could be said about all kinds of growth. I will keep in mind that Rome wasn’t built in a day and take every chance to improve myself.

Passage 3

Studying chemistry in US

Doing experiments is one of the

most interesting things about

studying chemistry. In China, it’s

often teachers who do the

experiment in the front of the class

with students watching. But in the

US, students take action by

themselves.

The first time I took a class in my

school’s chemistry lab, I was

surprised to find that students were

fully “armed”. Everyone was

wearing goggles (护目镜), plastic gloves and aprons (围裙), as if there had been a bio-chemical attack! Safety is always the primary concern for science lab classes in America. The outfit (装备) prevents us from being exposed (暴露) to toxic (有毒的) chemical materials if they are accidentally spilled (泄露).

My chemistry teacher Mrs Zurolo usually gives us the instruction sheet (一张纸) the night before the lab class and lets us read it. During the class, she first goes over the procedures (步骤) and then puts us into groups of two to do the experiments. What’s special is that for every lab class, Mrs Zurolo switches (交换) everyone’s lab partner so that we can work with different classmates.

The class is often filled with screams and laughs. Once we tried to burn chemicals and observe the color of the flame (火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including

brigh t orange and dark green. Many students in my class were amazed. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures with their phones, posted them online and sent them to friends. Mrs Zurolo didn’t get angry with us at all for our “noises”. She even took selfies with us!

After finishing an experiment, we need to write a detailed lab report that includes the procedure, our observations and the final results. If there has been a major error in the experiment, we need to analyze (分析) why it occurred (发生) and what we should do to avoid it next time. The reports are important. They are graded and make up around 25 percent of our term grade.

Passage 4

Stories of Mao coming to US

Professor Han Yuhai gives a talk about his book Let’s Read About Mao Zedong. AFP

His face is on China’s banknotes. His statues (雕像) are found in some Chinese colleges. He is one of the most well-known Chinese people in the world. He is Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China.

Sept 9, 2016 marked the 40th anniversary of Mao’s death. Even 40 years on, he still interests many Chinese people. We have learned about the famous leader’s great stories since childhood.

But what do young American people know about Mao Zedong?

They will soon have a good way to read his stories.

Let’s Read About Mao Zedong, a book telling the story of Mao Zedong, will be published later this year in the US. It is aimed at young American readers, China Daily reported.

Let’s Read Abou t Mao Zedong is the English translation (翻译) of a Chinese book, written by

51-year-old Peking University professor Han Yuhai and published in February. The

English-language book is being published by US company Benchmark Education.u

“The book is designed for younger readers, I was told. So no notes, no long passages of quotations (引文), and it had to be beautifully illustrated (有插图的),” said Han.

Reading this book can help young people in the US develop their understanding of Mao and China. “We were drawn t o this book because we felt that Mao was a highly influential historical figure who is not widely studied in Western culture, particularly among young people,v” said Thomas Reycraft, CEO and president of Benchmark Education.

This book highlights how Mao encouraged Chinese people to build a national personality of someone who “dares (敢于) to dream, do and combine knowledge with practice”. As for Mao himself, he is shown as a man of courage and wisdom (智慧).

For example, on the night of Nov 18, 1917, Mao organized a few hundred students to fight against the enemy and save the city of Changsha. But the students only had wooden guns. Only around 20 policemen had real guns and went with them. Mao asked the policemen to fire a few shots (开枪). The students set off firecrackers (鞭炮). Then, they shouted: “Give up! You have no way out!” The enemy was scared and gave up.

This was Mao’s first battle (战役). Later, Mao led the Communist Party of China to victory. Mao was “a visionary (有远见的) young man with little formal education” who later became “a great mentor (导师) to more than 800 million people”, according to Han in the Chinese book.

III. 1. rewarding 2. communicate 3. access 4. embarrassing 5. positive 6. commitment 7. virtual 8. benefits 9. minimum 10. opportunities IV. 1. up 2. into 3. from 4. with 5. to 6. up 7. of 8. in 9. for 10.with V. 1.G 2.B 3.E 4.I 5.H 6.K 7.M 8.O 9.F 10.C Sentence Structure VI. 1. "Why do you do it?" they used to ask. "You aren't unhappy at home, are you? .... " "Of course not," Johnny replied. "Then why?" "I just like seeing places," Johnny told them. Johnny continued to "see places" although everyone tried to stop him.
