Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. What to Expect The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health. Accommodation Zones Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential(居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground. Meal Plans Available ? Continental Breakfast ? Breakfast and Dinner ? Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation

includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal (谷物类食品) , bread and tea or coffee. Friends If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy. Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. C Running, as most of you already know, is a sport that all sorts of people love. Running a marathon is alsosomething that many long-distance runners have as a goal. Now if you decide you want to train for a marathon, how do you go about getting yourself into excellent shape for the race of your life? Most marathon training schedules last around 20 weeks and are designed for runners who can run 4-5 days perweek. The secret of a successful training schedule lies in avoiding injury that can happen

through pushing yourself let's say,20 miles per week up to runs of 50 miles per week at some point before the actual marathon. Alternate (交替) hard days with easy days: an easy day could be a day off altogether or something else like a three-mile run which, although it might notseem to be really worth the effort to some of you, actually is a joy to do. Be careful how you warm up and slow down, because these are the times when injuries could happen. When you set off for a run, take the first mile slowly and when you break into a sweat, stop and do some stretching exercises for a couple of minutes. Always take the last mile slowly too---if you stop suddenly after a hard run, then those of you who might have heart attacks are putting yourselves at greater risk at the point. One word of warning: don't start a training schedule without some guidance from a properly qualified trainer. He or she will be able to tell you what you're doing right or wrong! Remember that under normal circumstances, health benefits from regular running are an increased sense of energy and well being, together with fitness . too fast or too hard. So, the idea is to increase your mileage gradually from,

D If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain

power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes gray matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London(UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals(通两种语言的人)”, who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that gray matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language e. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the earlier they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists. 32. What does the underlined part “gray matter” (in Paragraph 2) refer to? A. Material of the brain. B. Grey hair. C. Intelligence. D. Difficult situations. 33 The experience of learning a second language can ______. A. change one’s brain completely B. increase the ability to learn C. make one smarter than others D. improve one’s maths skills 34. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. the researchers from UCL did another study in Italy B. it will be easier for one to travel around the world by learning a second language C. the research done on the Italians showed a totally different result D. a similar study was done on native Italian speakers who learn English as a second language 35. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. You should learn a second language that is not your native language. B. Learning a second language can help improve your brain power.

C. If you want to learn a second language, you should do it at a certain age. D. The research done by the researchers from UCL is very successful. D
