47404061 In 1863 the first underground passenger railway in the world opened in London. It ran for just under seven kilometers and allowed people to avoid terrible 1.crowds (crowd) on the roads above as they travelled to and 2.from work. It took three years to complete and was built using an interesting method. This included digging up the road, https://www.360docs.net/doc/a85772423.html,ying (lay) the track and then building a strong roof over 4.the top. When all those had been done, the road surface was replaced.

Steam engines 5.were used (use) to pull the carriages and it must have been 6.fairly (fair)unpleasant for the passengers, with all the smoke and noise. However, the railway quickly proved to be a great success and within six months, more than 25,000 people were using 7.it every day.

Later, engineers 8.managed (manage) to construct railways in a system of deep tunnels (隧道), which became known to the tube. This development was only possible with the 9.introduction (introduce) of electric-powered engines and lifts. The Central London Railway was one of the most 10.successful (success) of these new lines, and was opened in 1900. It had white-painted tunnels and bright red carriages, and proved extremely popular with the public.

故填were used。

根据上文的“the railway quickly”可知,此处用it代替the railway。

Most of us are more focused 4.on our tasks in the morning than we are later in the day.So, get an early start and try to be as productive 5.as possible before lunch. This will give you the confidence you need to get you through the afternoon and go home feeling accomplished.

Recent 6.studies (study) show that we are far more productive at work if we take short breaks 7.regularly (regular).Give your body and brain a rest by stepping outside for 8.a while, exercising, or doing something you enjoy.

If you find something you love doing outside of the office, you'll be less likely 9.to bring (bring) your work home.It could be anything—gardening, cooking, music, sports—but whatever it is,10.make (make) sure it's a relief from daily stress rather than another thing to worry about.

阅读理解 A (2019·日照检测)Along with the standard pigments(颜料) and paintbrushes, artist Sean Yoro(known as Hula),requires an unconventional piece of equipment for his particular brand of mural(壁画) making:a paddleboard. The Hawaiian muralist, balanced on the top of the floating platform, describes women from various sites across the world, whose homelands are often threatened by the effects of global warming. For his most recent project, titled“What If You Fly”,Hula traveled to Baffin Island, off the coast of Nunavut,Canada,to paint a portrait of local Inuit woman Jesse Mike, who lives there with her daughter. In a short film telling of the artist's process,Mike explains her frustrating previous experiences working with filmmakers who reported on the terrible circumstances troubling her endangered landscape.“For most people,it's about the polar bears,it's not about the people,”she said.“Well, let's make it about the people.” Hula and his team spent 14 hours searching for the perfect iceberg canvas(油画布),knowing all the while that the ice itself, and any image created on the top of it,would soon melt away into nothing. “It's a little ambitious t o do this larger-than-life ice mural in the Arctic, and somehow,at the same time, make a connection to the human culture,”climber and filmmaker Renan Ozturk said of the project. When Hula found his proper ice,he painted a portrait of Jesse he took earlier on his camera.Working against the power of time and Mother Nature, the artist aimed to finish as much of Jesse's portrait as he could before the iceberg disappeared. The massive image,Hula's most remote and technically challenging piece yet, communicates a memorable reality—the consequences of climate change, first and foremost, affect people. 1.What is“What If You Fly”? A.A film about the muralist.

阅读理解综合练(十二) A (2016·10浙江) Digital technology—email and smart phones especially—have vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office.Even so,most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey(调查) of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are doubtful about remote working.Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it,and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated. Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced(加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient(高效的),because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example,to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush. The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker. More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value.Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home.Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently. 1.Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working? A.They fear losing control of their workers. B.They want to stick to their routine practice. C.The y have little trust in modern technology. D.They are used to face-to-face communication. 2.What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working? A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Reserved. D.Disapproving. 3.What does the author suggest smart firms do? A.Shorten their office hours. B.Give employees a pay raise.
