Pros and C ons of an ‘Arranged M arriage’

Arranged marriage is a type of marital union that people choose their lover by others instead of themselves. From the book I read in this semester named"The Giver", I could see that the marriage of Jonas' parents was arranged by their community. In their society, all the people have no choice to choose their lover. However, they can lead a harmonious and good life. Because the elder of the community had chosen the most suitable person for them to marry, they hardly had arguments and conflicts in their daily life. So, as far as I am concerned, the arranged marriage has both advantages and disadvantages.

Although nowadays many people object to the arranged marriage heavily, people cannot deny the fact that arranged marriage still has many merits. First, it saves a lot of time, energy, and money. As we all know, if people want to know a person completely, they need to get along well with him. During that period, we not only should spend plenty of time but also money. Take Jonas' family as an example, they do not need to be concerned about these bits and pieces, so they can use these time and money to do something useful. Second, I think all the people should have a husband or wife to accompany them. In Jonas' community, they are never afraid of being alone because the community will help them to find their spouse. However, in our society, many adults who are in the marriage age cannot find a person to marry, and they maybe alone for their whole life.

In addition, take Chinese people as an example. Traditionally, a wife should live with her husband's family after marriage. It is not easy to handle well the relationship

between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. But the arranged marriage always planned by parents, so the parents will be satisfied with their son-in-law or daughter-in law. So that many contradictions between parents and daughter-in-law can be avoided. Lastly, owing to being unfamiliar with their spouse before they get married. They will cherish the relationship between wife and husband and also they will pay more attention to consider each other.

Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the shortcoming of the arranged marriage. First, I think a loveless marriage is meaningless and will not last for long. For Jonas' parents,we know that they have no feeling of love, and they are allowed to tell lies when they become adults,it seems that they do not care about each other genuinely, and what they did is just for the sake of finishing their daily tasks. I think this relationship between them is meaningless. Second, in my view, everyone had imagined about his or her marriage. The psychological gap between imagination and reality will let them feel disappointed. Therefore, maybe they are not willing to treat the arranged marriage seriously and will not give their true hearts to each other. Third, because of being unacquainted with each other, they may not have too many common interests and hobbies. Being unfamiliar with characteristic and dietary habit of each other, they will hardly get along well with each other after marriage. What is more, it is unfair for their child because they cannot lead a harmonious life.

In conclusion, the arranged marriage has both its good points and bad points. But I think the most important thing to create a good family is that both husband and wife should devote themselves to the family with love.
