The Niowra say that if the boys think of their crocodile mothers and fathers, they don't feel the pain. The boys also play drums and even tell jokes during their time in the hut to take their minds off the pain. Amazingly, some boys sleep during the most painful parts of the ceremony!

The Niowra believe that this ceremony makes the boys stronger and braver. After the ceremony, the boys will have the marks of the cuts on their backs and chests for the rest of their lives. "You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family." That line comes from American writer Harper Lee's book "To Kill a Mockingbird." Now compare her words to another famous expression: "Blood is thicker than water." This means that family will always be with you while other people with no blood connection may come and go.

However, if forced to choose which is more important, American researchers now say friendship is more important than family. Their new study suggests that friends may be more important than family members, especially as we age.

The study comes from researchers at Michigan State University. They found the importance of friendship on health and happiness grows as people get older. William Chopik was one of the lead researchers in this study. He says, "keeping a few really good friends around can make a world of difference for our health and happiness.

Family can be helpful and enjoyable, but can also cause trouble.”

The Michigan State researchers considered information from two separate surveys. In the first group, both family and friendship might be good for health and happiness. However, in the second, researchers said that friendship “became a stronger predictor of health and happiness” as people get older. Unhealthy friendship led to increased chronic conditions (慢性病).

But keeping a friendship takes time. "If a friendship can be through the test of time," Chopik said, "you know it must be a good one, a person you can turn to ask for help and advice a nd a person you want in your life.”

This may be good news for people who don’t have strong ties with family members. Not all of us are born into the families we need. But we all have the ability to choose friends that we need.

Students in western Ohio(俄亥俄州) have to say “bye-bye” to snow days. Snow may fall, but students won’t be able to spend the days sledding (滑雪橇) outside. Classes will continue online. Officials say that holding electronic workdays (e-days) will help students keep up with their studies on snow days. It will also help students not to make up (弥补) schooldays later in June.

Which would you like better, spending a cold day on a computer, or sitting in school in June when you should be on vacation? Jordan Dewar, a student reporter, holds the opinion that having online work on snow days is the better choice, “You would be working on a day that you’ve already planned on having schoolwork.”

“Having extra days of school in summer can interfere with (妨碍) families’

vacation plans. Besides, what if your school does not have air-conditioning? Think about sweating (出汗) through seven hours at school on a hot June day when you could have been relaxing by a pool with your family. Doesn’t an e-day sound better than that?” Jordan Dewar said.

For some students, it would be easier to concentrate (专注) on e-days than on makeup days. “You can do a little work online, go play, and then come back later,” says Rachel Meyers, 12. “But on June days you would just have to sit there for seven hours, thinking about how you could be outside, so you may lose learning interest.”

There are some students arguing that it’s not fair to ditch snow days, however. They say that snow days give them a much-needed break. They also note that missing a day here and there is not enough to put them behind. Most students in Silver Valley School think one problem of e-days is that sometimes family members have to share computers at home.

“School budget cuts (预算削减) around the country are expected to continue into the 2017-2018 school year,” the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Web- site states. “The school wouldn’t be able to afford bo th online classes and taking care of the school,” Austin Krewson, an eighth grader, says.

Moreover, electricity is likely to be cut off during snowstorms. If kids don’t have power at home, the money and the time in running the new program would be wasted.

42. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that _________.

A. students will have sledding classes at school

B. students have to end snow days earlier than planned

C. officials believe snow days may put students behind in their studies

D. officials suggest students should have more schooldays in June

43. The student reporter, Jordan Dewar, believes that _____________.

A. students can help each other with their studies on e-days

B. there are more advantages to have classes on makeup days

C. having e-days in winter will save the cost of air-conditioning

D. students had better study online when it snows heavily on weekdays

44. The underlined word “ditch” in Paragraph 5 probably means“____________.”

A. give up

B. put off

C. carry out

D. pay for

45. The writer mentions the statement on the AASA Website to _____________.

A. explain the reason to hold the e-day program

B. show the difficulty of running the e-day program

C. suggest the government should spend more money on education

D. explain why some students can’t afford computers for online classes

Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country’s imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差)is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import

(英语) 英语阅读理解专题练习(及答案)

(英语)英语阅读理解专题练习(及答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Education is not a bystanders sport. Numerous researchers have shown that when students participate in classroom discussion they hold more positive attitudes toward school, and that positive attitudes promote learning. It is no coincidence that girls are more passive in the classroom discussion and score lower than boys on SATs. We found that at all grade levels in all communities and in all subject areas boys controlled classroom communication. They participated in more interactions than girls did, and their participation became greater as the year went on. Our research contradicted the traditional assumption that girls control classroom communication in reading while boys in math. We found that whether the subject was language arts and English or math and science, boys got more than their fair share of teacher attention. That teachers talk more to male students is simply because boys are more aggressive in grabbing their attention by calling out answers to the teachers' questions first. While girls sit patiently with their hands raised or keep silent. Psychologist Lisa Serbin and K.Daniel O'Leary, then at the state university of New York at stony brook studied classroom interaction at preschool level and found that teachers gave boys more attention, praised them more often and were at least twice as likely to have extended conversations with them. Years of experience have shown that the best way to learn something is to do it yourself. It is also important to give students specific and direct feedback about the quality of their work and answers. Teachers behave differently depending on whether boys or girls are active to provide answers during discussions. During classroom discussion, teachers in our study reacted to boys answers with powerful, precise and effective responses, while they often gave girls mild and unclear reactions because of their silence. Too often, girls remain in the dark about the quality of their answers. Active students receiving precise feedback are more likely to achieve academically. And they are more likely to be boys. This kind of communication game is played at work, as well as at school. As reported in numerous studies, it goes like this. Men speak more often and frequently interrupt women. Listeners recall more from male speakers than from female speakers, even when both use a similar speaking style and cover the same content. Women participate less actively in conversation. They do more smiling and gazing, and they are more often the passive by standers in professional and social conversations among peers. Women often their own statements into unsure comments. This is accomplished by using qualifiers and by adding tag question. These uncertain patterns weaken impact and signal a lack of power and influence. Only when girls are active and treated equally in the classroom will they be more likely to achieve equality in the workplace. (1)What does the authors mean when they say“Education is not a bystanders sport.”? A. Both boys and girls should do more sports. B. The girl students should be the audience to

But he says they also have more sugar and salt, so they taste better. The farmer grew carrots, cabbage, onions and beetroot.
