When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.

One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model.

I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer.

In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education.

A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.

(1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea?

A.It's time to shorten the learning process.

B.Best learning takes place over time.

C.University education should be watered down.

D.College education calls for reform.

(2)We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" model

B.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" model

C.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" model

D.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient

(3)In most US universities, ________.

A.college students are offered the co-op program

B.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required credits

C.all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation

D.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

(4)We can infer that________.

A.the author is a college professor exploring ways to make learning more efficient

B.the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to afford

C.the author considers the university education quality very important

D.the author pays special attention to the all-round development of college students

【答案】(1)B

(2)A

(3)D

Argentina

Argentina has been a popular tourist destination for many years. It has great restaurants, a rich history, and many places to explore. Not to mention, it's not very expensive to live here. A decent sized home can cost around $139000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United States.

The sound that woke Damian Languell at 8:15 in the morning was so loud he assumed it came from inside his house in Wade, Maine. As he got up to investigate, he heard another sound, this one coming most definitely from outside. Looking out of his bedroom window, he noticed a tree enveloped in smoke about 500 yards away. A car wrapped around the tree's base, its engine on

fire.

Grabbing buckets of water, he and his wife ran to the crash site. Up close, the accident looked worse. The car was split nearly in two, and the tree was where the driver's seat ought to have been, as if planted there. No one should have survived this crash, and yet there was 20- year-old Quintin Thompson, his terrified face pressed against the driver's side window, in visible pain.

Languell tried putting out the fire with his buckets of water but failed. When the flames got into the front seats, he knew he had to get the young man out. So Languell opened the car's back door and climbed in. Using a pocket knife he'd brought with him, he cut through Thompson's seat belt. Now that Thompson was free, Languell pulled him out, and dragged him to safety before the entire car was in flames.

It is empathy that drove Languell to help, just as he said, "My heart goes out to Thompson. When you are that close to that level of hurt, you feel it so directly." For his heroic action, Languell was added to the list of real-life heroes changing the world.

(1)Where was the first sound actually from?

A.A house on fire.

B.A car crash.

C.The bedroom window.

D.The basement.

(2)What do we know about Quintin Thompson?

A.He saved his car from fire.

B.He was successfully rescued.

C.He remained calm all the time.

D.He was capable of helping himself out.

(3)Which of the following best explains "empathy" underlined in the last paragraph?

A.Honesty.

B.Wisdom.

C.Sympathy.

D.Responsibility.

(4)Which words can best describe Damian Languell?

A.Daring and generous.

B.Caring and grateful.

There might be as many as 10 million species of complex life on this planet today —— a huge number. But add up all of the complex species that ever lived and some biologists think the grand total would be about five billion. The estimate leads to an astonishing conclusion: a staggering 99% of species are not around any more. They have been driven to extinction.

More species are joining the ranks of the extinct every year. Many scientists believe we are living through an episode of remarkably rapid extinction, on a scale that has been seen only five times in the last half a billion years.

They call this current episode the sixth mass extinction —— a large, global decline in a wide variety of species over a relatively short period of time. And they tend to agree that humans are the main cause.

Over-hunting, overfishing, and human-driven habitat loss are pushing many species to the brink. In fact, we have changed the planet so much that some geologists are now suggesting that we have entered a new phase in Earth's history; an epoch they call the "Anthropocene". By 2100, it is expected that humans will have caused the extinction of up to half of the world's

current species.

Because we are living through this extinction, it is relatively easy for us to study the driving forces behind it. But how do we determine what caused other mass die-offs that happened long ago? To do so we have to look at what archaeologists, palaeontologists, geologists and other scientists have concluded from the evidence they have gathered.

The trouble is, those scientists do not always agree with one another —— even about the most recent extinction event. As well as the five-or six- mass extinctions, there have also been many smaller extinctions.

One of these mini extinction events happened towards the end of the Pleistocene, a few tens

of thousands of years ago. It is sometimes called the "megafaunal" extinction because many of

the species it claimed were particularly large animals, weighing more than 97lb (44kg). However,

its cause remains a debate amongst scientists.

(1)What can we learn about the sixth mass extinction?

A. Humans are the main cause of it.

B. It means a global decline over a long time.

C. It occurred towards the end of the Pleistocene.

D. Scientists still disagree about the cause

of it.

(2)What can be inferred from the text about species?

A. 99% of species will not be around any more by 2100.

B. By the 22nd century, there will probably be about five million on this planet.

C. About eight years later we will enter what is called the "Anthropocene".

D. It is not easy for us to figure out causes behind the"Anthropocene".

(3)Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph ?

A. Land animals.

B. Marine life.

C. Huge animals.

D. Flesh-eating creatures.

【答案】(1)A

(2)B

(3)C

灭绝是在a relatively short period of time,所以B错误;最后一段提到大型动物的灭绝发生

在the end of the Pleistocene,而第六次大规模物种灭绝是当下正在发生的,所以C错误;

They call this current episode the sixth mass extinction ——a large, global decline in a wide variety of species over a relatively short period of time. And they tend to agree that humans are the main cause."

There mi ght be as many as 10 million species of complex

life on this planet today ”,以及第四段中的"By 2100, it is expected that humans will have caused the extinction of up to half of the world's current species."

根据最后一段中的"because many of the species it claimed were particularly large animals, weighing more than 97lb (44kg)."

Dutch beachcomber (海滩拾荒者) Wim Kruiswijk has accumulated a collection of 1,200 messages-in-bottles over the course of nearly 4 decades and has responded to almost all of them, 68-year-old Kruiswijk says that his unusual hobby began in 1983 when he found three drift bottles (漂流瓶) on his local beach, each containing letters and return addresses. He wrote to all three addresses and was surprised to receive responses from each one. It was this experience that aroused his interest in hunting and collecting messages in bottles, and he hasn't stopped looking for them since.

“I find my messages in bottles on the beach of Zandvoort, where I live, and on the Dutch Islands,” Kruiswijk recently told Great Big Story. “Messages in bottles is slow mail. It takes you days, or wee ks, or months to find a bottle. ”

In the early years, Kruiswijk would find as many as 50 bottles a year, but since 2000 that has slowed to around 20-30 finds, mainly due to beach cleaning efforts. He believes that the rise of the Internet has also played a role in the diminishing number of messages in bottles, telling Dutch newssite PZC, “I used to get a response at half the bottle messages that I answered. Now that's less; many people want 'instant satisfaction'.”

Throwing a message in a bottle out into the sea is a longstanding human tradition dating back to the time of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, about 310 BC,who used the bottles to study water currents. Scientists still apply the method to this day, as a means to help researchers develop ocean circulation maps, and to crowdsource scientific studies of ocean currents.

In the past bottles have also been used to send distress messages from sailors in trouble. They also have been used for memorial tributes, or to send loved ones' ashes on a final journey. One of the more common uses though is just to send invitations out to prospective pen pals, a quaint notion in these modern times, but, as Kruiswijk so clearly shows, an effective one.

(1)What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A. Kruiswijk found secrets hidden in drift bottles.

B. What made Kruiswijk become a beachcomber.

C. How Kruiswijk formed the hobby of collecting drift bottles.

D. Kruiswijk liked to do some research on bottles thrown into the sea.

(2)How did Kruiswijk feel the first time he received response from drift bottles?

A. Satisfied.

B. Asionished.

C. Frightened.

D. Disappointed.

(3)Why do Kruiswijk find fewer drift bottles than before?

A. People hate to receive messages from strangers.

B. Many drift bottles have not been washed up onto the beaches.

C. Drift bottles appearing on the beach are cleared up rapidly.

D. Fewer people are interested in Kruiswijk's message in bottles.

(4)What's the purpose of Theophrastus using the bottles?

A. To ask for rescue.

B. To look for a pen pal.

C. To study ocean currents.

D. To send a message to his loved person.

【答案】(1)C

Imagine waking up one day and finding that your beautiful local beach is no more—gone, its fine white sand swept away by an abnormal storm. You go about your daily business for 12 long years and then suddenly the beach is back, all its glory restored by another storm. This is what happened on the island of Achill, off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return of the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005.

That in itself is unusual enough, but the story gets even better! You see, another beach in Achill did a disappearing act once, but took much longer to return. The beach at Doonagh, located only

six miles away from Ashleam Bay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leaving just rock pools behind.

There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at Ashlcam Bay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again. But this time around it took a bit longer than that. It was last seen in 2005 and it stayed for a few months at that time before it was washed away again.

As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thrilled to have their sandy beach back, and even though no one knows how long it's going to be around for, they are making the most of the time they've got before it disappears again.

Some may be quick to believe climate changes cause the phenomenon, but that's not the reason these two beaches in Achill keep disappearing, Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics (流体力学) and sediment(沉积物) supply, rather than climate changes.

Regardless of what's causing them, disappearing and reappearing beaches are just part of what makes nature so fascinating.

(1)What is people's reaction to the return of the Ashleam Bay beach?

A. Full of fear.

B. Quite delighted.

C. Very disappointed.

D. Extremely con fused.(2)What can we learn about the beach at Doonagh?

A. It is not located in Ireland.

B. It disappeared 12 years ago.

C. It once disappeared for more than 30 years.

D. It is just made up of rocks and pools.

(3)According to the local legend, when should the Ashleam Bay beach have come back?

A. In 1982.

B. In 2012.

C. In 2016.

D. In 2018.

(4)What does Dr Kevin Lynch think of the phenomenon?

A. Some abnormal storms lead to ocean's enlargement,

B. It is hard to uncover the mystery of beach's disappearing.

C. Climate changes can result in beaches disappearing completely.

D. Hydrodynamics and sediment supply cause two beaches to disappear.

【答案】(1)B

(2)C

(3)B

(4)D

根据第一段中的” off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return of the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005.”及第四段中的“As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thri lled to have their sandy beach back,”。

Ashleam Bay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leavi ng just rock pools behind,”可知,Doonagh海滩于1984年被春天的风暴席卷了所有的沙子只留下岩石池,在2016年初恢复了。

根据第一段中的“the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005.” 第三段中的“There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at Ashlcam Bay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again.”

根据第五段中的“Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics (流体力学) and sediment(沉积物) supply, rather than climate changes.”

(What is the idea?What are facts?)

Children are always boasting.They say things like“My Dad's car is bigger than your Dad's,”“My Mom is smarter than yours.”and“My family has more money than yours.” The word“boasting” means __B___ A.骄傲 B.吹牛 C.顽皮 D.幼稚 Many plants and animals are going extinct.Mammoths,which are related(有关联的) with Asia elephants,are now extinct.There are no mammoths in the world today. 1.A mammoth is a kind of _C___. A.plant B.bird C.animal D.tree 2.The word extinct means _C_ A.出现 B.危险 C.灭绝

From the passage,we learn that___.答案为B: The rainforest people have done some- thing to protect their home. An illness had kept the boy home和下文写给Rick的信中可以猜测出意为“去世”。

使用教材:北师大版高中英语必修5 Unit 14 Lesson 3 Nine to Five Teaching Design 课题:The Road to Success 课型:阅读课课时:第一课时学段:高二上 一、指导思想与理论依据。
