Sounds crazy? Fans across the UAE (阿联酋) are so excited as Justin Bieber is scheduled to perform at a stadium in Dubai on May 4. In less than 36 hours all the tickets available were sold out.

If you have a teenager lying under your roof, it's likely that she has spent your hard-earned cash on some concert tickets. Clare Smart, a researcher on teenage development in Dubai, has some ideas about the pop phenomenon. "Justin Bieber is a teenager himself and therefore teenagers feel a connection to him, in the songs that he sings, his hairstyle and how he dresses… He represents what many teenagers would like for themselves, such as the latest clothing trends, exciting travel and high earnings. Besides, it gives teenagers the feeling of being part of a group and a shared experience with other teenagers who have the same interest in a particular celebrity…" says Smart.

It's easy to be sheltering as a parent and it's a good idea to talk to your teenagers about their idols, find out what they like about them and why. "You could accompany your teenagers to a concert or listen along to the latest song in the car with them," suggests Smart, "This shows that you are interested in the things they consider to be important."

Sometimes, however, a normal level of interest slips into an obsession(痴迷) and then it becomes a cause for concern. It is now considered a personality disorder, which is closely related to higher levels of depression, anxiety and stress. In practice, teenagers who are overly obsessed with stars often have damaged relationships with their parents.

The good news, however, is that there is plenty that parents can do to prevent their teenagers from becoming overly obsessed with those so-called celebrities. Let them know what their real life is like behind the story, and they can see these celebrities in a new angle.

46. What does the first paragraph intend to tell the readers?

A. How expensive the concert tickets are.

B. Why teenagers love music concerts.

C. How popular Justin Bieber is.

D. What idols teenagers worship.

47. According to Clare Smart, Justin Bieber represents teenagers' .

A. dreams

B. families

D. trouble

48. According to para. 2, teenagers can get from worshiping an idol.

A. a knowledge of pop culture

B. an easier way to become famous

C. a sense of belonging

D. a closer relationship with parents

49. What does Clare Smart tell us in para. 3?

A. Teenagers and parents often have a tense relationship.

B. Parents always have the same interests as the teenagers.

C. Celebrity worship exist among different age groups.

D. Parents should understand and protect the teenagers.

50. If teenagers are overly obsessed with celebrities, they .

A. will establish a connection with their idols

B. actually suffer from a personality disorder

C. often see themselves as a particular celebrity

D. always care too much about their friends

One of my best friends flew down from Alaska to celebrate her 40th birthday with me. We explored the countryside with no real agenda or constraint. The grand finale(压轴戏) was a beautiful outdoor dinner filled with memorable conversation and laughter. We headed out on the one-and-a-half-hour mountain pass drive in the pitch dark, still engaged in deep conversation.

About 45 miles from home, I noticed the low fuel light was on, and I looked on my car's computer to see that we had one mile until we were out of fuel. Oh, no! How could I have forgotten to check before heading out of the town? I didn't want to alarm my friend, and didn't interrupt her story. I started praying and told myself to keep calm.

Running out of fuel on this route would have been truly catastrophic at 10:30 p.m. It is incredibly dark and rugged(崎岖的), and there's not a lot of traffic. There are no towns, few people, and definitely no petrol stations. My mind raced as I considered the tragic possibilities.

I finally calmly told my friend about our situation. She started strategizing about what we would do and how we could call my husband, Steve, but I didn't want him to have to get our three children out of bed. There was the tow truck option, but we would have to be on the side of the road in the middle of the wilderness for at least 45 minutes! All of the options were truly terrible.

She was nervous, and all I could do was constantly tell her I was certain we would make it. Sure enough, we did. We literally made it over 40 miles with no fuel, and I know that my car's fuel measurement system is pretty accurate. Now, there is the logical part of my brain, trying to make excuses for the situation and the car and every other possible option. But inside, I heard the truth: we experienced a miracle.

51. From the first paragraph, we can infer that the author and her friend _______ .

D. made a phone call to the police

53. What does the underlined word probably mean in the third paragraph?

A. terrible

B. nervous

C. harmful

D. unexpected

54. Why didn't the author want to call her husband?

A. She was worried about bothering her husband.

B. She knew she could still drive a long way.

C. She thought her friend could find out a solution.

D .She didn't want her children to have to get up.

Unit 1 Growing up Understanding ideas The Age of Majority 成年 In most countries, turning 18 marks the start of adulthood. But what does reaching this milestone, the age of majority, really mean? Will you be completely in charge of your own life and be able to express yourself in new and exciting ways? What new responsibilities will this freedom bring? Here, young people tell us what turning 18 means,or meant, to them. I can’t wait to be 18. For instance, I’ve been working ever since leaving school, and yet I won’t be voting in the next election. Why? Because I still won’t be old enough. Surely, if you’re old enough to earn a wage and pay taxes, you should be allowed to have a say on how the government spends them! I’ve also been taking driving lessons, and in fact I will be taking my driving test on the very day I turn 18. My mum worries about me being behind the wheel. As an ambulance driver, she ‘s seen a lot of car accidents involving teenagers and thinks the legal age for getting a driving licence should be 21. Bur I think I’m already mature enough to understand that driving a car also means taking responsibility for my life and the lives of other people. I celebrated my 18th birthday just before I went to university. I expected to feel instantly different, as if I had closed the door on my childhood and stepped into a whole new adult world. But it wasn’t like that. When I woke up the next day, there were still rules to obey and lessons to attend. In fact, the change has been more subtle and gradual than I imagined. Instead of being the selfish teenager I used to be, I have begun to feel more aware of other people and to develop a stronger sense of social responsibility. To give an example, I will be signing an organ donation agreement this time tomorrow. This was a big decision for me and I made it without asking my parents(although I knew they would approve). Turning 18 also changed the way that society viewed me. I was really surprised when a bank contacted me with a credit card offer. Of course, I would like to have more freedom with money and doubt I will be getting a credit card at some point, but I currently don’t have a steady income, so getting a credit card might tempt me to spend more money than I have!
