As a kid, I was always around animals and I always enjoyed it.After my senior year of high school, we started leaving this farm. Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect. After about two-and-a-half years, I found that was not quite what I wanted to do. I felt I wanted to be an architect and had a hobby farm. But why not just have a farm and make it my career?

It's an exciting business.I think a lot of people don't realize what's involved with dairy farming(乳牛场).We took several trips to some progressive farms in New York when we first started. And it really changed my attitude to what you could do. You can be a successful businessperson with a lot of challenges. And those challenges are part of what makes it very exciting -it's not just milking cows. There's nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions.

Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is what we need to do. We don't just need the land for the animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. And there's a real balance there, a real recycling. You give the feed to the cows, the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure. And the best thing to do is to put it back on the land. You need 2 acres per cow basically.

The land that we rent is beautiful and the land that we own is beautiful. You get half a mile off the road and you're looking back at scenery across the valley. It's impressive. You get the rows of grass and the cows in the distance.

1.What major might the author choose when he studied at university?

A. Compute Science.

B. Language and Literature.

C. Architecture.

D. Science of Animals.

2.What work is included in the dairy farming according to the text?

A. Taking trips around the farm to enjoy life.

B. Milking cows, nutrition and decisions.

C. Playing with the cows around the farm.

D. Designing architect for the dairy farm.

3.Which of the following is the biggest challenge for the author?

A. Huge amount of money.

B. Quantities of workers.

C. High qualified milk cows.

D. Securing enough land.

根据文章第一段中的“Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect.”

根据文章第二段的“it's not just milking cows.”和“There's nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions.”

根据文章倒数第二段中的“Well,land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is what we need to do.”

请你以“Should universities limit the number of visitors?”

One Possible Version

Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly popular for tourists to visit famous universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University during the holidays. However, some universities decide to limit the number of visitors, which has caused heated argument in China.

I think the number of tourists should be limited. Here are my reasons: first of all, there are too many tourists wandering through the school yard, teaching buildings, or even the library, which has a negative effect on the students who are absorbed in learning. Second, with so many tourists coming, it is harder for security guards to keep order. Third, universities are designed to provide education rather than tourism service.

In summary, universities should limit the number of tourists to ensure a good learning environment.

There are 30 boys in this house and Anne Belles is their mom. Belles has wanted to help children since she was a kid. “I was intrigued by the movie Oliver! in the 1960s, a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I told my mom, …That?s what I want to do. …” Anne?s boys are from 3 to 25 years old. All of them are challenged in some way. “They each have special needs — physically, mentally (精神上), or at school,” says Belles. Every day, a small army of childcare workers, nurses, and volunteers comes in to help cook and clean, wash 30 loads of laundry a day, and take care of health needs. To find out how much such a large family costs, we followed Jim Silcock to the grocery store. He spent $880 on food for one week. Every month they spend $2,000 to run five cars, $15,000 for the fourteen paid helpers, and more than $10,000 on medical costs. The family receives $26,000 a month from the state government, and makes some money from a family business. All the money is spent on the children; having new clothes and fancy cars isn?t important to Belles. How do the kids feel? 17-year-old Anthony says, “The family is there whenever I need something ... I feel like I am loved.” “Everything I?m doing now is what I wanted to happen in my life,” says Anne Belles. “So, no regrets; this is perfect. Mother hands me the grocery list and puts money in my pocket, hoping it will be enough. She's had a hard day, and I've had a hard week. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when I get to the store. I grab the bread, some milk, and other things on the list. As I turn to head out, I see a beautiful dress in the window. I turn away, bitter that I could never own such a dress. Outside, I cannot stop thinking about that pretty dress. It's not fair that I can never have what I want. I work so hard to help my family and yet I get nothing in return, just another list to do. In my anger, I fail to realize the apples are rolling across the road. Suddenly, I see a pair of hands, offering me an apple. Looking up, I see the tanned (晒黑的) face of this stranger. His clothes are mismatched, borrowed or stolen. But his eyes are soft and kind. “Thanks,” I say. No other words are spok en as he continues to help me. I tell him “thank you” one more time and am on my way because I have many other things to finish. Suddenly, he says, “Have a good day, ma'am.” And then he gives me the biggest smile I have ever seen. Right then, he looks years younger — and I feel a fool.
