Dear Mr. Price,

I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service, but what happened last Saturday made me very angry. It was my son's birthday so we ordered a no-smoking table at your restaurant for 7:30 p.m. We arrived on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8:00 p. m., we were given a table in the smoking area. I asked to move but I was told that there were no other tables. A lot of people were smoking so it was

uncomfortable and unhealthy.

The first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found a little insect in her vegetables. She was surprised and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress told us it was a piece of garlic(大蒜). When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she said sorry and took the food away.

We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife's meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that he was on holiday. I complained again about the terrible insect. He told me Janet had finished work. He didn't believe my story and gave me a bill for the three meals including my wife's. I argued with him but had to pay in the end.

The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology(道歉)from your impolite head waiter and a full refund(退款)for our meal. It cost $68. Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone.

You can contact me on 742-3254 or through e-mail if you want more information.

Thank you for your attention.

Yours sincerely,

Raymond Yuen

Place: Find somewhere quiet and peaceful to write. This could be your bedroom, a park or a café. It should be relaxing to let you think freely.

Read, read, read: Good writers read about other writers' work. They don't copy but they do learn a lot from them.

Characters: Before you start writing, know your characters well. Your main character should be someone readers care about and have something in common with. For example, although Harry Porter can do magic, he's still a youngster with problems, like most of his readers. A main character should have at least one weakness. A perfect character will soon get boring and is difficult to care about. Fights are more exciting if the hero could lose or even die.

Most stories have a "bad guy". They shouldn't be totally bad since that's not believable. Most people become bad because of something that happened to them in the past.

Setting: Think about where and when your story is taking place, in the past, present or future. Most people write about places they know. If writing about the future, think carefully about how

life will change. If writing about the past, find out what life was like then. Most people like reading about places they have never been to.

Plot: The plot is usually about trouble or a conflict that the main character has to face. The trouble or conflict can be with one or more other characters, or a situation, such as a plane crash.

Structure: Stories usually have this structure:

1. Story starts happily. Reason for conflict soon comes out.

2. Something bad happens. The main character must become a hero.

3. The problem is solved in an exciting way.

4. Everything usually ends happily. We know what will happen to all the main characters.

Be creative: Think about each sentence and even each word. How can you make the story more exciting for readers? Make it different from other stories.

Have fun: The best stories are written by people who love writing. Enjoy it!

42. Where is the best place to write the story?

A. On a bench in a small garden.

B. In the living room with the TV on.

C. At a busy train station.

D. On a crowded bus.

43. What advice is given about the setting for a story?

A. Somewhere that is familiar to the reader.

B. Somewhere that is familiar to the writer.

C. Somewhere that is unfamiliar to the writer.

D. Somewhere that has never been written about before.

44. According to the passage, what is a good rule when writing?

A. Write about a perfect hero.

B. Give the story a happy ending.

C. Copy the best bits from different stories.

D. Write your story as quickly as possible.

45. What can be the best title of this passage?

A. The influence of writing.

B. The importance of writing.

C. Writing a good story.

D. Having fun in writing.

C

You are from a middle class family, and live in a normal size home without any showy possessions, but you are surrounded by surprising consumption(消费). This contrast is beginning to bother your 6-year-old son. You are worried that he will want to live as they do, and wonder if you should move.

Sometimes big pocket money, joyful birthday parties, special playrooms and super-big houses tell you that your neighbors probably have more money than you do, and that they’re not as careful as you are with money, but you may find that they cook and dig in the garden with their children just as often as you do, talk with them as freely and read to them every night.

Or you may find that some of these parents stay in one wing of their big house while children play by himself, way off in a wing of his own. In that unfortunate case, he is basically growing up alone without being looked after properly, but this can happen to a child who lives in a normal-size house, too, if he has a TV a computer and a few video games in his room. Even the most caring parent doesn’t walk in and out of it to see what show her child is watching, what Internet site he has found and if he’s playing that video game.

Too much uncontrolled screen then may lead to a certain loss of innocence(天真), and if it

doesn't, you might decide to move. Don't judge your neighbor too harshly(严厉地), though. There're some things that are right with almost any neighbor and some things that are wrong with the best of them—like those super-big houses. The wealth of their owners—and the way they throw money around—may make your son feel sorry for himself, unless you help him understand that you and his dad save some of the money, give some to people who don't have enough and use the rest to pay for whatever the family needs.

Children want—should be provided with—explanations when their parents don't give them what they want.

46. What is the problem with the worried parent in the passage?

A. Her neighbors may have a negative effect on her son.

B. She doesn’t have as much money as her neighbors.

C. She can’t afford special playrooms.

D. Her son wants to move into a bigger house.

47. We can infer from paragraph 2 and 3 that parents should .

A. work hard to live a richer lire

B. give their children more freedom

C. spend more time with their children

D. set an example for their children to follow

48. What do the underlined words in paragraph 4 mean?

A. help the poor people willingly.

B. save money for their children.

C. spend money carelessly.

D. 1eave money all around the house.

49. What does the author aim to express in the passage?

A. Children feel ashamed of themselves in a rich neighborhood.

B. Children are unfortunate to have poor parents.

C. Children should enjoy their comfortable life.

D. Children need proper guidance from their parents.

五、阅读还原。(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Big Ben is one of London's best-known landmarks, and looks most beautiful at night when the clock faces are lighted. The four dials(钟面)of the clock are 23 feet square. 50 Minutely adjusted with coins placed on the huge pendulum(钟摆), Big Ben is an excellent timekeeper, which has rarely stopped.

The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock-tower itself, but to the thirteen ton bell hung within. 51

This bell came from the old Palace of Westminster, which was given to the Dean of St. Paul's by William III. Before returning to Westminster, it was remade in White church in 1858. 52 During the Second World War in 1941, bombs destroyed many buildings, but the clock tower remained as it had been. 53 Its unique sound was broadcast to the nation and around the world, a welcome comfort of hope to all who heard it.

There are even cells within the clock tower where Members of Parliament(议会)can be imprisoned for not obeying the law, though this is rare. The last recorded case was in 1880.

54 However, those with a "special interest" may arrange a visit to the top of the

Clock Tower.

A. It is located by the River Thames.

B. The tower is not open to the general public.

C. Many people desire to get into Big Ben for a visit.

D. Big Ben continued to keep time and strike away the hours.

E. The minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high.

F. The BBC first broadcast the sound produced by it on the 31st December 1923.

G. The bell was named after the first commissioner(委员)of works, Sir Benjamin Hall.
