Can man’s best friend be replaced by a small animal? Busy pet lovers in Britain have been buying hedgehogs (刺猬), whose living habits make them loved by the modem workers, because they wake up in the evening when their owners arrive home after a day in the office.

Although Britain has its own wild hedgehogs, the latest pet fever is African hedgehogs. “They are very good little animals. The way they move and the way they poke their noses into everything are very lovely,” Bonnie Martin said.

“Costs f or the animal and equipment needed can cost up to 300 pounds, but hedgehogs, who can survive on cat food, are cheaper to feed because they eat a third, of what a household cat would normally eat,”Martin said, “People often travel very far in order to get a good hedgehog.”

However, animal protectors say that the trend is a serious threat to the decreasing population of Britain’s native wild hedgehogs. The baby hedgehogs will die without their mum because they are completely dependent on their mother for four weeks.

Bullen, an animal protector, said that introduction of a foreign species could cause a secondary wildlife problem if pet owners, who get tired of their hedgeh ogs, set them free into the wild. “People will probably think they can exist in our country, but we are not sure if they can and what harm they might

There are usually few things people want to do less than housework. But while washing the dishes and dusting the shelves can seem like a troublesome thing, a new study has revealed just how important they are to general health and happiness.

In fact, scientists now believe cleaning the home is more important to mental and physical health than other factors, such as the area you live in or how much you earn. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University say the benefit of housework is because of the exercise it takes to get the daily job done, which in turn affects mental health.

Dr Wright, at the university’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and a research team wanted to find out how income, education, environment and health behaviors, like smoking and exercise, affect an older person’s health. The study’s 337 participants, from 65 to 94 years old, had to have at least one chronic (慢性的) illness. They also had to have physical restrictions (限制) that prevented them from 4oing at least one basic daily task, such as bathing and dressing.

Dr Wright said she was surprised to learn that housework and keeping their property affected the participants, physical and mental well-being more than other factors. “House cleaning kept them up and moving,” said Dr Wright. “A clean environment is helpful to treat some illnesses. What I found was that neighborhood poverty did not directly affect mental or physical heal th.”

The study provided evidence that Wright had observed in her visits: people living in a chaotic (混乱的) environment seemed less satisfied than those in a place that was neat and tidy. Wright hopes the study shows how important it is for older adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses to continue physical activities, such as doing reaching exercises while sitting, arm curls and standing up and sitting down in a chair.
