When I was growing up in Wyoming, my mom became the state’s first female US marshall (执法官). I’ll never forget the local newspaper headline that read, “Just one of the boys”. I was pleased that she could be so successful in a field that’s traditionally for men.

Some might say I’ve followed in her footsteps—I’ve made a name for myself in sailing, a sport often considered “a man’s world”. I’m taking part in the V olvo Ocean Race — the most competitive and dangerous offshore race in the world. This year, for the first time in over 10 years, there’s an all-female team, and I’m a part of it.

In the summer of 2008, I went to St. Croix through a college internship (实习) program focused on educating locals about HIV and AIDS. There, I discovered my l ove for sailing and later, offshore racing. Because I grew up in Wyoming, I didn’t know that sailing was a members-only activity. My lack of fear allowed me to talk to lots of sailors.

SCA, a global hygiene (卫生) company, made the decision to support an all-female team because women buy most of its products. When they began accepting applications(申请), I made it my duty to become a part of the team.

After a stressful, two-year application process, I finally got the call. I moved to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and began training with the team immediately. I made Team SCA and would be sailing in the big race with only six years of experience.

Getting here wasn’t easy. I’m often asked how I made the team, not only because I didn’t have much experience, but also because sailing is considered a male sport. But I didn’t know that, so I gave it everything I had.

As women, we need to approach(靠近) our dreams as if we deserve to achieve them as much as men, because we do. Plenty of jobs, including sailing, are done by few women —but that’s not because women shouldn’t do them. We need to focus on our goals and passions, no matter how difficult they may seem.

Babies work hard to get ready to talk. They listen attentively, and at around 6 months of age start to babble(含糊不清地说) while their brains figure out how to make sounds understood by others. A new study suggests babies might also learn to gab by using their eyes.

“Babies start to lip-read(唇读) when they learn to babble,” said David Lewkowicz, a psychologist who worked on the study. At that time, he says, babies probably connect the sound of a word to the shape a person's mouth makes when saying the word.

Lewkowicz and Amy Hansen-Tift conducted the experiments showing babies' lip-reading skills. The scientists studied 179 babies from families where English is the main language spoken at home.

The children, who were divided into groups by age, wore special tools while they watched videos of a woman speaking English or speaking Spanish, which was a foreign language to the babies. The tool kept track of where the child looked while watching each video.

Babbling babies between the age of 8 and 12 months watched the speaker's lips during every video. Babies who could talk also watched the speaker's lips—but only while viewing Spanish videos. While watching the English videos, babies who could talk changed to watching the woman's eyes.The scientists say these findings suggest that babies who already use words can look away from a speaker's mouth and toward the eyes for additional, nonverbal(非语言的) communication signs.

The new study is useful for understanding how babies learn to speak, but it also might help researchers understand disorders like autism( 自闭症). Children with autism have a hard time communicating clearly and forming relationships with people. The new experiments suggest that lip-reading for a long time in younger children, between 1 and 2 years old, may be an early sign of autism.

Which English do you speak? English is the first language of several countries.
