I am a junior in high school. There is a lady at my school 16 job is to hand out call-slips(索书单) and prevent students from leaving campus 17 permission. Before today I had never seen her smile.

The other day my friends and I were eating in the cafeteria and I saw her walking around. When she came 18 (close) to us I could see that she was crying. She pulled out a tissue and quickly wiped her eyes. I thought to myself that this lady is

so under-appreciated and needs 19 (recognize) for all her hard work. So I wrote a note telling her that the students appreciated everything she did and 20 her contribution to our school made a difference in all of our lives. I signed it "Some thankful students" and slipped it into 21 envelope. Then I realized I didn't even know her name. I asked all of my professors but 22 knew her name. I finally went to ask the lady at student services and 23 (tell) that her name is Kathy. I bought her a bouquet of 24 (colour) sunflowers and taped the envelope to it. I brought the flowers to school and left 25 in her office.

She came into my third period class shortly afterwards to deliver a call-slip, and there it was - a smile on her face!

Ⅱ阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When I was a boy I always wanted to be a cowboy. I remember my Mom worrying about me getting sick from the heat in the summer, because I wore a

thick blue sweater all the time. No respectable cowboy, however, would wear short sleeves so I sweated while I played.

One day my parents gave me a bb gun. It looked just like a gun that all the cowboys used in the movies. I spent hours each day during those summer months shooting at stumps and pretending to be John Wayne (film actor who played tough heroes). As I was coming into the house one afternoon, though, I tried it one time too many. The gun that I thought was empty let out a soft pop and a bullet flew across the room and parted the hair of my Dad who was asleep on the couch. My Dad took one look at the bb hole a half inch above his head, walked over to me, took my gun, walked outside, and calmly broke it in half.

I didn’t cry too much over this. I knew how close I had come to hurting my Dad with my stupidity. I didn’t expect to ever get another bb gun either. Tha t is why I was so surprised when my Dad bought me another one the next year. I guess he thought I had wised up enough to know how to use it this time. I never put a single bb in the new gun, but in my imagination John Wayne rode again.

I eventually outgrew my cowboy stage, but I never did outgrow my appreciation for my Father’s forgiveness. He showed me that even when I messed up in the worse way I was still loved. He gave me another chance and let me know that I was forgiven whether I deserved it or not. He shared with me some of the unconditional love and forgiveness. May we always embrace and share that love and forgiveness as well.

It’s never easy moving schools. You’re settled in the school you’re in, you have your friends and you know your teachers and you just don’t want the change. But unfortunately some times it is necessary to move schools and start again. Once you’ve started at the new school there are little tips and tricks you could try to help you fit in and make new friends easily.

When you start at a new school you may be nervous and be keen to make new friends as soon as possible. You may feel like you need to make friends by changing who you are. If you want to make friends quickly you may feel like to fit in your need to alter your personality. This is not a good idea. Changing who you are for other people will only make you feel insecure and pressured. Be yourself, you don’t need to change and you soon enough will find friends who like you for what you are.

When you move to a new school in a new area you may want to keep in touch with friends from your last school and, depending on how far you now live from the old school, you usually can. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid making friends at your new school. If you are invited to another pupil’s house for tea, take up the offer. You may prefer to go out with your old friends but by getting involved with other pupils you’ll find yourself making friend s much more easily.

The teachers at your new school will be happy to help you settle in. If you are having any trouble fitting in or even if you just want to talk to someone who understands, have a word with your teacher. He or she will be happy to listen to you. If you are having trouble with another class member and you don’t know what to do about it, talk with your teacher. Your teacher is there to help so be sure to confide in him or her whenever you need to.

Moving to a new school in an unfamiliar area can be hard. You’ll be keen to fit in but don’t worry too much. Before long you’ll have made lots of friends and you’ll be having fun again.

31. Why does the author think moving schools difficult?

A. You are used to your old environment.

B. Your teachers don’t want you to change school.

C. It is never easy to get permission of the authority.

D. It is difficult to make new friends in a new school.

32. After moving to a new school, you should ___________ .

A. listen to your teacher

B. try to be yourself

C. change your personality

D. forget your old friends

33. The underlined words “confide in” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by

________ .

A. believe in

B. have respect for

C. have confidence in

D. tell your thoughts to

34. Which of the following is NOT the suggestion made by the author?

A. Take up invites

B. Talk to your teachers

C. Always be yourself

D. Keep in touch with your old friends.

35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. Giving advice on how to move to a new school.

B. Giving advice on how to learn well in a new school.

C. Giving advice on how to fit in at your new school.

D. Giving advice on how to make friends in a new school.

C

We live in a “now” culture. If it takes more than five seconds for a website to load, we won’t view it. We want to call our friends now, even if we’ll see them in 10 minutes. The “now” culture is one of convenience, and let’s face it, convenience can make our lives easier.

Unfortunately, by gaining convenience, we’ve lost some of our patience. If you’re like me, patience does not come naturally. Here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way to cultivate more patience in my life:

Ask yourself why you’re in a hurry. If you feel rushed while going about your normal day, ask yourself why. Will the world end if you get home five minutes late? What if you stop to talk to the random people you meet each day? If you do stop to talk, you’ll be amazed how much more connected you’ll feel to your community.

Hang around people who have patience. I had a lot less patience before I met my husband. Being around him daily has certainly given me a greater appreciation for the art of waiting. He’s not only a great example of someone who lives his li fe patiently, but he tells me if I’m getting too anxious or impatient. If you don’t know someone who’s patient in your immediate circle of friends, take a clas s like yoga where meditation is part of the art.

_____________________. Sometimes you can lose sight of long-term goals in the rush towards instant gratification. Most people trying to lose weight have a hard time cutting out sugary or carb-loaded foods completely. It helps to cut these lofty long-term goals into smaller chunks. To encourage weight loss, you can slowly cut back on your calorie intake or increase your exercise regimen each week. Whatever route you take, setting those little goals will help you achieve the big ones faster.

Think of the things you’ve gained by being patient. When all else fails, I think of the good things that have happened in my life because I waited. Passing up on a few “so-so” job offers last year paved the way for me to lan d a job I really wanted. When you can think of positive outcomes that have come from waiting, it puts into perspective why it’s not always the best strategy to rush into things.

36. What does the author think of patience?

A. It makes our life easier.

B. It brings convenience to life.

C. It can be gained by slowing yourself down.

D. It is a common phenomenon in a “now” culture.

37. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that ________ .

A. patience can be learned from others

B. women get more patient after marriage

C. patience plays an important role in marriage

D. the author gets more patient by taking a yoga class

38. What is the best title for the fifth paragraph?

A. Never lose sight of your long-term goals.

B. Set a long-term goal and achieve big ones.

C. Focus on short-term goals to reach long-term ones.

D. Set both long-term goals and short-term ones to lose weight.

39. The underlined phrase “Passing up on” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ________ .

A. Seizing the chance of

B. Doing well in

C. Making full use of

D. Refusing to accept

40. The author supports her arguments mainly by ______.

A. analyzing causes

B. giving examples

C. describing process

D. making comparison

D

Global Positioning Systems(全球定位系统)are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. However, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.

Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Mr. Brown says, “They just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of 'garbage in garbage out'.”

Mr. Brown says this is a common human error, but what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. He says, “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it’s going to the wrong place.”

Mr. Brown says, “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you’re doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies(资格)that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong. This goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills.”

Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.

41. According to Barry Brow, in most cases, ________ are blame for the problems.

A. human errors

B. GPS errors

C. errors caused by both drivers and GPS

D. errors caused by putting in a wrong address

42. The example of Barry Brown’s friend is used to show that _________ .

A. GPS is nothing but garbage

B. GPS is still not accurate enough

C. it is difficult for drivers to use GPS equipment.

D. sometimes drivers are responsible for the problem

43. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that _______ .

A. It’s impossible to drive from the east to the west in the US.

B. Barry Brown’s friend went to Stockholm, Sweden by plane.

C. Given wrong instructions, the GPS will produce wrong results.

D. GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills.

44. Which of the followings is one of the shortcomings of GPS equipment?

A. It tells the driver to turn once at a time.

B. It gives the driver the overview.

C. Its screen is too small to be seen clearly.

D. It is only suitable for passive drivers.

45. What’s the main idea of the text?

A. GPS systems need to be improved.

B. Driving with GPS can be difficult to navigate.

C. Drivers should understand how GPS systems work.

D. Drivers should learn to use GPS systems correctly.

第二节读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

As a kid, I was a little fat. In college, I was less active, and I started blowing up. It got out of control when I went to law school. At the age of 30, I weighed 414 pounds. I was always tired. I have a family history of heart disease, and I was scared.

I also wanted to look better. So a few weeks after my birthday, in the spring of 2006, I started to lose weight.

Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking to a subway stop a few blocks away instead of the one closest to my apartment. I gradually increased the distance. A year later, I started to run. At first I could run for only two minutes, but I kept on.

I made a difference. I was losing nine or ten pounds a month, and I had a lot more energy. I started to think about the New York City Marathon, which goes right past my apartment building. For years, I thought I could never do that. But now I realized that maybe I could…

By my 33rd birthday, in the spring of 2009, I was down to 180 pounds. That summer, I started formally training for the marathon. And on the morning of November 1, I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than 40,000 other runners, waiting for the event to start.

When we started moving, it was an amazing feeling to have people cheering me on, handing me cups of water. In Harlem, my mom and brother stood on a street corner, waving. And then I crossed the finishing line in Central Park, and somebody put a medal around my neck. I was in tears from being so happy.

Above all, you should be persistent, because only in this way can you become slim in the near future.

第二节读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

The author was getting very fat when young and he tried to lose weight step by step. He tried hard and even joined in the City Marathon. At last he achieved great success.

Having read the passage, I was deeply touched and admired the author for his insistence. If he had not been so determined and persistent, he would not have lost so much weight and lived an exciting life. His story shows that if one sets his mind to something, nothing is impossible.

It reminds me of a similar experience. One day it was announced that there would be a rope-skipping competition in our class. On hearing the announcement, I felt nervous because I had never done rope skipping before. But my sister, who promised to teach me, persuaded me to have a try. At the beginning I found it hard to learn to skip because my feet always blocked the rope. However, I didn’t lose heart but changed my way of learning. Gradually I could skip faster and faster. Thanks to my sister’s help and my perseverance I took part in the co mpetition confidently, in which I skipped 155 times and ranked fifth.

So my dear friends, I strongly recommend that only with insistence can your dream eventually come true!

广州二模英语试题

2019年广州二模英语试题 A The country is India. A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping- on- a- chair -at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men. “A woman's reaction in any crisis, "the officer says, “is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has." The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place-under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone." I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred-that's five minutes-and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"

A Many people would love to leave their jobs behind and have a life-changing adventure overseas. They imagine lying under palm trees as the sun goes down. However, life overseas is not always easy, and many are not prepared for the shock of living in an alien culture. The honeymoon period At first, for those who actually decide to move abroad, life is an exciting adventure. They enjoy exploring their new surroundings, and life seems like an extended holiday. They don’t mind trying the local cuisine and discovering the local culture. They can even afford to practice their foreign-language skills without fear of making mistakes. Trouble in paradise In many cases, when people consider moving to another country, they often fail to realize how different life will be. As time goes by, they become frustrated when language and cultural misunderstandings become a daily headache. In this stage, the visitors begin to withdraw from life in the host country and avoid spending time with local people in favor of mixing with others from their own cultural background. The road to recovery Gradually, most visitors realize they must accept the differences and not fight against them. This change encourages them to improve their language skills and slowly they manage to do the things they could easily do at home, such as opening a bank account. This new-found confidence enables them to see a side of life which very few tourists get to witness. Adjusting to life abroad can often be a real problem. The secret to overcoming it is to stop trying to change your host country: you will not succeed. If not, you risk losing your dream and having to return to the old life you wanted to leave behind. 21. Why do people moving abroad feel excited at first? A. They find foreign living much easier. B. They have the necessary language skills. C. They love the adventure and exploration. D. They enjoy meeting people from different cultures. 22. According to the author, what is the main problem many people moving abroad face? A. Homesickness. B. Culture shock C. Health problems. D. Lack of employment. 23. What would the author suggest people moving abroad do? A. Study the local language. B. Go on holidays frequently. C. Learn how to open a bank account. D. Seek out people from their home country. B Australia loves interesting money. In 1988, it was the first country to replace paper money with special plastic banknotes. Now it’s introduced a new five-dollar bill so technologically advanced that many experts are calling it the money of the future! At first glance, the new note looks much like the old one. It has the same pink colour and main pictures on the front and back. But look closer, and you will notice a clear window running down the middle, surrounded by images of the yellow Prickly Moses, a type of Australian plant. Tilt(使倾斜)the note a little and you will see the Eastern Spinebill, an Australian bird, beating its wings as if trying to fly away. Turn the bill from side to side, and you will notice the picture of a small building at the bottom of the note spins, and the image of “5” changes position. While these moveable features are impressive and entertaining, that was not the reason Australian government officials spent ten years developing them. Their primary purpose was to make it impossible for criminals to produce their own fake notes. The new five-dollar note also has something to help blind people easily identify the money. It has a raised bump alongside the top and bottom, enabling blind people to quickly determine its value. The credit for persuading the Australian government to add this all-important bump goes to 15-year-old Connor McLeod. The blind Sydney teenager came up with the idea in 2014 after being unable to tell how much money he had received for Christmas. Connor says he was so embarrassed at not being able to see the difference between notes that he only carried coins to pay for food at the school cafeteria. To
