A

An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe, but is close to it.

All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices---just

about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed.

There are other phrases meaning th e same thing as “apple-polishing” --- “soft-soaping” or “butter-up”. A gift is just one way to “soft-soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise --- telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.

Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love or hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who gets so little of it.

We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But we just lap it up for its food value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.

Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to the endless sickening flattery of his courtiers (朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless power.

He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery.

61. Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple-polishing” ?

A. A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.

B. An employee tells his boss how good he is at management.

C. A knight (骑士) is said to be of limitless power by his followers.

D. A teacher praised his students for their talent and wisdom.

62. Which of the following statement about flattery is TRUE according to the author?

A. Too much flattery can carry us away.

B. Flattery is too empty to do people any good.

C. Flattery can get nothing but excessive pride.

D. Flattery is one of the ways to apple-polish people.

Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life

The Power of Choice.

Every one of us makes countless choices every day. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.

How Do You Make Choices?

If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all. Imagine a world where every parent, spouse (配偶), friend, teacher, businessperson, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.

It's the Intention.

“But how do I know what is really best?” you might ask. The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all. If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt. Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.

What's Best for Me, Too!

Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly (过度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.

63. According to the passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?

A. Every one of us makes countless choices every day.

B. Every choice, however big or small, has an influence on us.

C. People act differently towards the person who treated them badly.

D. People tend to reach for a junk snack when hunger strikes.

64. How should we make choices?

A. To be interested in a richer, fuller life.

B. To make life better for ourselves.

C. To base our choices on what's best for all.

D. To imagine a world where everyone did their best.

65. To choose what is best for us, we’d better _______.

A. try to be selfish all the time

B. sacrifice ourselves for others

C. set aside some time for ourselves

D. control our temper before children

Given all the heated debates about how America's children should be taught, it may come as a surprise to learn that students spend less than 15% of their time in school. While there's no doubt that school is important, a series of recent studies remind us that parents are even more so. A study, for example, finds that parental involvement—checking homework, attending school meetings and events, discussing school activities at home—has a more powerful influence on students' academic performance than anything about the school the students attend. Another study, reports that the effort put forth by parents has a bigger impact on their children's educational achievement than the effort devoted by either teachers or the students themselves. And a third study concludes that schools would have to increase their spending by more than $1,000 per pupil in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement .

So parents matter a lot—a point made clear by decades of research showing that a major part of the academic advantage held by children from wealthy families comes from the “concerted cultivation(协作培养)of children” as compared to the more laissez-faire style of parenting common in working-class families. But this research also reveals something else: that parents, of all backgrounds, don't need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an edge. They don't need to chauffeur their offspring to enrichment classes or test-prep courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler: talk.

But not just any talk. Although well-known research by psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risley has shown that professional parents talk more to their children than less-affluent parents—a lot more, resulting in a 30 million “word gap” by the time children reach age three—more recent researches are raising our sense of exactly what kinds of talks at home contributed to children's success at school. For example, a study conducted by researchers at the UCLA School of Public Health and published in the journal Pediatrics found that two-way adult-child conversations were six times as effective in promoting language development as interludes in which the adult did all the talking. Engaging in this reciprocal back-and-forth gives children a chance to try out language for themselves, and also gives them the sense that their thoughts and opinions matter. As they grow older, this feeling helps middle- and upper-class kids develop into confident supporters for their own interests, while working-class students tend to avoid asking for help or arguing their own case with teachers, according to a research presented at American Sociological Association conference earlier this year.

The content of parents' conversations with kids matters, too. Children who hear talk about counting and numbers at home start school with much more extensive mathematical knowledge, which predicts future achievement in the subject. Psychologist Susan Levine, who led the study on number words, has also found that the amount of talk young children hear about the spatial properties of the physical world—how big or small or round or sharp objects are—predicts kids’ problem-solving abilities as they prepare to enter kindergarten.

While the conversations parents have with their children change as kids grow older, the effect of these exchanges on academic achievement remains strong. And again, the way mothers and fathers talk to their middle-school students makes a difference. Research by Nancy Hill, a professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, finds that parents play an important rol e in what Hill calls “academic socialization”—setting expectations and making connections between current behavior and future goals (going to college, getting a good job). Engaging in these sorts of conversations, Hill reports, has a greater impact on educational accomplishment than volunteering at a child's school or going to PTA meetings, or even taking children to libraries and museums. When it comes to promot ing students’ success, it seems, it’s not so much what parents do as what they say.

70. The first paragraph mainly tells us that ______________.

A. Teaching methods are vital to students in the USA

B. schooling is necessary for American students

C. parents affect their children’s achievement greatly

D. schools have paid more money to get the same results as parental involvement

A. children from rich families may have more academic advantages

B. working-class parents tend to talk to their children more

C. wealthy families tend to adopt laissez-faire style of parenting

D. parents have many ways to give their children an advantage

72. What is the most effective talk between parents and children in improving language

development ?

A. Professional parents’ tal k.

B. Two-way conservation.

C. Adults talking all the time.

D. Children speaking as interludes.

73. How are the second and third paragraphs developed?

A. By offering explanation.

B. By giving examples.

C. By making comparisons.

D. By providing analysis.

74. What can we infer from last paragraph?

A. It’s necessary for children to follow the example of their parents.

B. Children should be active in their educational accomplishment.

C. P arents should often communicate with the teachers of their children.

D. Parents’ influence stays with children for a long time.

When living out our daily lives, it’s often easy to blame the world for our problems. While it’s true that there are things in the outside world we can’t control, the biggest difference between two people is simply their reaction towards it. Having understood this for a while, I’ve often asked the question, “How?”

How is it possible to change your reaction to a particular event or situation?

Why should you stop complaining? Here are three reasons that I believe—if you truly understand them—will help you move forward and live a less stressful life:

1. The world owes you nothing

The world really does have nothing to do with you or anyone else. The planet will continue to exist without you on it, which—as depressing as it sounds—should also provide you with a first glimpse of the reality of what your life should truly be about.

You suddenly start to realize that while we were nurtured and looked after as kids, this really isn’t the case once we’re an adult. The world doesn’t provide us with the same blanket of comfort as our carers once did, which only means one thing: It’s up to us to provide that blanket for ourselves and no one else,w hich brings me on to the second reason…

2. You are in charge of your own life

If you look back at your own life, you’ll begin to realize that everything you have ever done up to the present moment was all a result of the decisions you’ve m ade. Sure there may have been people around you who have convinced you to do some of the things you may have done. But it all ultimately depends on your decisions: So who’s really to blame?

You begin to see that amongst everything that’s happening arou nd you, what you have is a blank canvas. Suddenly, your hopes and dreams aren’t dreams at all but are within the realm of possibility.

What are your dreams? What are your hopes and goals for the future? Do you have a plan? Start to think about what it might be and remind yourself daily that it’s all up to you to make

things happen.

3. You can’t be a leader if you behave like a victim

Would you rather live a life with rules, or lead a life that is governed by you? I’m certain the answer is simple.

It’s really easy to put blame on things that are external to you, as it avoids personal responsibility and allows you to refuse the possibility that you may have things that can be changed. So what can you change?

Being a leader in your life takes courage and requires the willingness to face your fears, experience failure, and take complete personal responsibility of everything that happens to you. I challenge you to turn the mirror on yourself and to ask yourself the following question: “What can I now do to turn my life around?”

You have no one else but you to make it happen.

Dear God,

Now that I am no longer young, I have friends whose mothers or/and fathers have passed away. I have heard these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers or/and fathers until it was too late to tell them.

I am blessed with my dear mother and father who are still alive. I appreciate them more each day. My mother and father do not change, but I do. As I grow older and wiser, I realize what extraordinary people they are. How sad that I am unable to speak these words in their presence, but they flow easily from my pen.

How does a person begin to thank his mother or/and father for life itself? For the love, patience and just plain hard work that go into raising a child? For running after a baby, for understanding a moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything?

How does a person thank a mother or/and a father for continuing to be a mother or/and a father? For being ready with advice (when asked) or remaining silent when it is most appreciated? For not saying: "I told you so", when she/he could have uttered these words dozens of times?

I don't know how, dear God, except to bless her/him as richly as she/he deserves and to help me live up to the example she/he has set. I pray that I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother or/and father look(s) in mine.

A daughter writes to God recalling her unforgettable past about experiencing the love from her loving, thoughtful, patient and forgiving parents, deciding to follow her parents’perfect example.

What a touching letter! Undoubtedly, we all have experienced parent s’love countless times during the process of our growth. It is they who keep, at all times, focusing their mind and energy on raising us, ensuring our lifelong safety and happiness.

We are never short of such stories as parents’ love. As a child, once I felt terribly sick at midnight. Hearing this, my parents rose immediately and took me to the nearest hospital. Accompanying me by my bed, they didn’t even sleep a second the whole night.

We can never thank our parents enough. Never ever will I let them down from now on. Studying hard is the only way, in my opinion, to express my gratitude to them. Only in this way can I guarantee to live up to their expectations in the future.

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23.

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2. What might people benefit from the new technology mentioned above? A. Living a life free from stress. B. Improving the heart function gradually. C. Accessing health services for free. D. Knowing abnormal blood pressure earlier. 3. What can be done for a better Anura? A. Equipping phones with better cameras. B. Allowing phones to record longer videos. C. Collecting data from more diverse samples. D. Persuading participants not to take medicine. 4. Why does the author write this text? A. To predict future applications of TOI. B. To introduce TOI and an app related. C. To describe functions of cameras on phones. D. To evaluate the quality of an app called Anura.

As has been all too apparent in recent days at Balcombe, few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms; yet they never take "direct action", even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies (财政补贴) , which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents (居民) . Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion(比例) to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace. Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewables, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU ( European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation. Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms' impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition (联合) government are in disagreement over what it should say. We have some advice for the two parties: publish the report, and let the country be the judge. Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful, it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them. Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention. The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an "acceptable" report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way. Given the sensitivities involved, all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion (猜疑)that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.
