A

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. In spite of the hopeless condition, two of the children, Albrecht Durer and Albert, had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art. After many long discussions, the two boys finally worked out an agreement. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother who attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy.Tossing a coin, Albrecht Durer won and went off to Nuremberg.Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, supported his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation(轰动).By the time he graduated, he had earned considerable fees for his outstanding works.

When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner to celebrate Albrecht’s triumphant(胜利的)homecoming.Albrecht drank a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled him to complete his dream.“And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to look for your dream, and I will take care of you.”

Tears streaming down his pale face, Albert sobbed, “No...no...It is too late for me.Look...look at what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been broken at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis(关节炎)so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less draw delicate lines with a pen or a brush.”

To show thanks to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother’s injured hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply “Hands”, but the entire world almost

immediately open ed their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed it “The Praying Hands”.The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, let it be your reminder—no one ever makes any success alone!

1. Why did the two brothers work out the agreement?

A. They were so curious as to make a joke.

B. Their family couldn’t afford the academy.

C. One of the brothers was supposed to go into mines.

第三部分阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡将该项涂黑。

【福建省福州一中2013模拟】A

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person

could not have a "complicated idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (嘲讽) or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)

There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life," the professor told the reporter with finality , " these books have made me all that I am ." That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信) of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.

56. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer thought it was impossible for one to read two thousand books.

B. While at high school, the writer had plans for reading.

C. The writer only read books no more than 100 pages.

D. The writer thought the teacher was not being serious about the suggestion of reading.

57. The underlined phrase "with finality" most probably means ____________.

A. firmly

B. immediately

C. simply

D. pleasantly

58. The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to________.

A. explain why it was included in the list

B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list

C. show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand

D. prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word

59. The writer provides two book lists to ________.

A. show how he developed his point of view

B. tell his reading experience at high school

C. introduce the two persons' reading methods

D. explain that he read many books at high school

In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery”(control)—feeling important and worthwhile —and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”—finding life enjoyable — are not always the same.Women often are told “You can’t have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You choose a career, so you can’t expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life.” or “You have a wonderful husband and children —what’s all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they are to feel good about themselves.

Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two aspects. One is mastery, which includes self-respect, a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression.Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity.Pleasure is the other aspect, and it is made up of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other.A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa(反之亦然).For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.

The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and correct past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being.But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work.In our study, all the groups of employed women were valued significantly higher in mastery than women who were not employed.

A woman’s well-being is developed when she takes on various roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles —marriages,

motherhood, and employment — were the highest in well-being, in spite of warnings about stress and strain(极度紧张).

4. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.

A. for women, a sense of “mastery” is more important than a sense of “pleasure”

B. for women, a sense of “pleasure” is more important than a sense of “mastery”

C. women can’t have a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” at the same

time

D. a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” are both necessary to women

5. The author’s attitude towards women having a career is________.

A. Negative B.positive C. indifferent

D. realistic

6 . One can conclude from the passage that if a woman takes on several social roles,

___________________.

A. it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strain

B. she will be more successful in her career

C. her chances of getting promoted will be greater

D. her life will be richer and more meaningful

7 Which of the f ollowing can be considered as a source of “pleasure” for women?

A. Family life

B. Various roles in society

C. Regular employment

D. Freedom from anxiety

Some people who like to eat very hot chili(辣椒)peppers say that they can help you breathe better if you have a cold. Others believe that chilies give you added energy. People have been growing chilies for centuries, and there are many kinds.

Want to fire up your meals with homegrown chilies? They need a warm climate. If you plant the seeds outside when the weather is cool, place the seeds under a glass.

That will add warmth from the sun and protect them from wind. You can also start the seeds in your home or a greenhouse.

If you plant inside, fill a 7.5-centimeter pot with soil. The pot should have holes in the bottom so water can run out. Tap the sides of the pot to settle the soil.Drop several seeds over the surface of the pot and cover it with a thin layer of vermiculite(蛭石), a substance that can hold air, water and nutrients. Then cover the top of the pot with a see-through plastic bag. Place the pot in a warm area. When the chilies start growing, take off the bag. When the plants have reached about two centimeters high, place each one carefully in its own 7.5-centimeter pot. When the roots show through the holes in the bottom of the pot, transplant each seeding into a twelve-centimeter pot. When the plants are twenty centimeters high, tie the plants to a stick placed in the pot to support them.

When the chili peppers are thirty centimeters high, pinch the tops off with your finger. That should make new branches grow. When the first flowers show, give the plants some potash fertilizers (化肥). When the weather is warm, put them into five-liter pots and place them outside. Make sure they get a good amount of light and water.

8. The most important condition that chili seeds need in cool weather is . A.enough heat B. enough sunshine C.enough water D. no wind 9. The underlined word “pinch” in the last paragraph probably means . A.cut B.give

C.1eave D.bring

10 According to this passage, how many times are chili plants moved altogether?

A.Once B.Twice

C.Three times D.Four times

11. From the passage we can infer that .

A.people who like eating chilies are energetic

B.the pot has holes in the bottom to let the air in

C.whenever the plants blossom, give them some fertilizers

D.it is not easy to eat homegrown chilies of your own

As hand-held devices such as smartphones are becoming more common, users are reporting some new physical problems. Florida chiropractor Dean Fishman began noticing an increased number of patients talking about neck and shoulder pain. He discovered these symptoms were due to the overuse of hand-held devices, particularly the action of bending the neck, and then coined the term “Text Neck.” As if the painful symptoms weren’t bad enough, Fishman warns that an untreated case of Text Neck could lead to permanent spinal(脊椎) damage.

Other doctors have warned about “iPad Hand,”a condition that occurs when people use tablets like the iPad for hours at a time. Most people use their left hand to support the tablet and their right hand to tap or scroll. Doing this for long periods without changing positions can result in severe joint pain.

In order to avoid or reduce the possibility of getting Text Neck or iPad Hand, use the following basic ergonomic(人体工学的) principles:

Avoid awkward positioning. Don’t strain your neck, and stay aware of how you are positioned in relation to the device. Make sure that both your neck and shoulders are relaxed and that you aren’t leaning over for a long period of time.

Take frequent breaks when using any kind of mobile device. Many doctors recommend that users change their position every 15 minutes.

When using a tablet, use a case that can support the device on a table or your lap at a comfortable viewing angle.

Along with a case, use a separate keyboard with your tablet. This will be more comfortable since you’ll be resting both hands on the keyboard. And since you won’t be holding the tablet, you’ll be less likely to experience hand or arm pain.

60. What kind of product for hand-held devices does the writer discuss?

A. One for recording.

B. One for charging.

C. One for telephoning.

D. One for typing.

61. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “coined”(Para1)?

A. cashed

B. created

C. changed

D. completed

62. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. If you are holding an iPad for long periods, it could cause spinal damage.

B. Text Neck symptoms include long-term damage in the back.

C. You are advised to lean over in relation to the device.

D. You should rest your hands on the keyboard at times.

63. In which magazine would you most likely find this article?

A. Personal Finance

B. Science Fiction Monthly

C. Mind and Body

D. Smartphone World
