B: Well, of course, there were some misunderstandings. Like the grammar of Indian English is a little different. And sometimes I couldn‘t understand someone‘s accent. But the amazing thing was here we were, all these different people, with all these we were, all these different people, with all these different accents, and we could communicate.

1. One of the things I really like about living in Costa Rica is that it‘s so safe. I mean, I can go walk around the streets with 50,000 pesetas in my w allet and I don‘t even worry about it. In American cities, I used to worry about waling around with 20 dollars in my wallet. And another thing is that sometimes I go into a restaurant and I can leave my backpack sitting at a table and I go up to order and I come back knowing that my backpack is going to be safe and no one‘s even touched it .

2. People in the States are so connected to their cars. They are so concerned whether their cars look good, and they talk about their cars a lot. I think that cars isolate people. Public transportation brings people together…and it‘s better for the environment. Americans live in their cars. This is one thing about living here that I just can‘t get used to.

3. People in Tokyo overreact when I can use chopsticks or speak t he language. I‘ve been living here for three years—of course I can eat with chopsticks and say some things in their language. They act as if I were some kind of genius who had broken a secret code, or as if I had just done them a really big favor. I don‘t congratulate them when they speak English to me. I don't get what the big is.

4. I‘ll never get over how helpful people are in Tel Aviv. The other day I was shopping for a certain book, right? The bookstore I usually go to didn‘t have it, so the clerk cal led a couple of his competitors until he found a store to hold a copy for me. After that, he photo-copied a map and highlighted where the store was, and marked the easiest route for me to get there. They would never do that in the U.S.
