第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Juliette married William Mackay Low and they went to England to live. Juliette became interested in the Girl Guides Association there. She observed their meetings and was very impressed because the girls acquired many useful skills. They learned how to cook, knit, tie knots and give first aid. They also learned about the history of the flag. Moreover, they developed important social skills as they learned how to work together. Juliette thought that girls everywhere should have this opportunity, so she decided to organize more troops.

Juliette organized several Girl Guides troops in both England and Scotland. Since she could not do all the work herself, she had to ask other women to help her. Sometimes the women were reluctant to give their time due to family responsibilities. However, Juliette was a very determined woman. When the women refused, she would pretend that she didn't understand what they said. As a result,

the women helped her in spite of being busy.

Juliette always persisted until she motivated others to help her with her goals. One encounter(遭遇) that required her persistence happened while she was in Scotland. She was walking along a road one day when she came to a stream. The only way across the stream was by a foot log, and Juliette was afraid to cross it alone. She was wondering what to do when she saw a peddler coming down the road. She told the peddler to go across the bridge first, and she would follow with her hand on his shoulder. Although the peddler started to protest, her insistence again paid off. He reluctantly led her across the foot bridge. Once they were safely on the other side, the peddler explained to her that he was blind!

When Juliette came back to America for a visit, she started the first Girl Guides troop in the country in her home town, Savannah. By the time she went back to England six months later, there were six Girl Guide troops in Savannah. At that time, the girls each made their own uniforms.

In 1913, the Girl Guides changed its name to the Girl Scouts. Juliette Low came back to Savannah that same year. She decided that there should be Girl Scout troops all over the United States, so she worked toward that goal. The first national Girl Scout conference was held in Washington, DC, on June 10, 1915.

Thanks to her, there are now Girl Scouts all over the world. Juliette's home in Savannah is a national Girl Scout center.

61. "Sometimes the women were reluctant to give their time due to family responsibilities." This

sentence means_____

A. The women were eager to help her start Girl Guides troops.

B. The women wanted to help, but had something due that they needed to work on.

C. The women were in charge of other families.

D. The women didn't want to help her because they were too busy with their families.

62. The main idea of this passage can best be stated as _____

A. Juliette Low used determination and persistence to start Girl Scout troops all over the

world.

B. Juliette Low was very pushy and always got what she wanted.

C. Juliette Low traveled to many different places in her life time but ended up back in

Savannah.

D. Without Juliette, the Girl Scouts would still only be a British phenomenon.

63. "...Juliette started the first Girl Guides troop in the country in her home town of Savannah. By

the time she went back to England six months later, there were six Girl Guide troops in Savannah." From this statement we can assume that_____

A. Juliette liked the uniforms the Girl Guides wore.

B. Other people set up their own troops because they were jealous of Juliette.

C. Juliette helped to start all six of these troops.

D. The girls in the first troop argued and had to be separated into six different troops.

64. After reading the passage, we can assume that_____

A. Juliette had to work because her husband didn't make enough money.

B. Juliette enjoyed being busy and helping others.

C. Juliette wanted to be a Girl Guide herself, but she was too old.

D. Juliette's husband didn't approve of her involvement in this association.

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock, is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we meet when we move from one culture to another.

Culture begins with the "honeymoon stage". This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from "jet lag" but we are excited to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.

Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, working or studying, buying groceries, doing laundry, or living with a home-stay family, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, girlfriend/boyfriend, pets. All the little problems that everybody in life has seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This "rejection stage" can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits.

The third stage of culture shock is called the "adjustment stage". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!

The fourth stage can be called "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock.

There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don't know about. This is called "reverse(颠倒) culture shock". Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!

65. How do you feel during the first stage of culture shock? _____

A. lonely and upset

B. bored and homesick

C. happy and excited

D. angry and discouraged

66. How could the third stage be described? _____

A. adjustment

B. rejection

C. enthusiasm

D. anger

67. What is the feature of the fourth stage of culture shock? _____

A. tense, but positive

B. relaxed

C. negative and stressed

D. afraid

68. Why might reverse culture shock be a problem?

A. It hardly ever happens.

B. It is extremely stressful.

C. Most people do not expect it.

D. It only happens to young people.

Anyone who is familiar with American media receives the impression that Americans are not too far removed from the days of the Wild West when guys with guns took care of business, both private and public. While American media, like media everywhere, exaggerate and distort(歪曲), there is a core(核心) of truth in these reports. Compared to many countries and cultures, America,

especially urban America, does appear to be constantly plagued by violence of all sorts. To avoid being a victim, use your common sense as you would when traveling anywhere else. Don't be studying maps and guidebooks at street corners; avoid wandering, especially alone, in dimly-lit streets or dark alleys; even if that's where the "real" bars and clubs are; don't leave valuables in your hotel room; don't go off jogging or walking very early in the morning until you have familiarized yourself with the neighborhood. Finally mugging is a very familiar word among Americans. It means someone pointed a gun, a knife, or some other killing object and demanded your money and valuables. It can happen anywhere, anytime. Do not think that because you are in a "nice" neighborhood or an exclusive(高级的) shopping area it will not happen. People can follow you to your expensive hotel room, confront(遭遇) you in a city park or even when you are in your car (known as carjacking). Do not argue or resist. Do what you are told and hope that you will be able to report it to the police later.

69. According to American media, _____.

A . America is a dangerous country B. America is an old country

C. America is a distant country

D. Americans like weapons

70. It can be infered that _____.

A. criminals have preference to attack strangers

B. criminals have an interest in maps and guidebooks

C. maps and guidebooks are not reliable

D. it is against law to read maps and gidebooks in the street

71. “plauged” in line 4 probably means _____

A. imagined

B. troubled

C. interviewed

D. warned

72. If you are pointed at with a weapon _____

A. call the police

B. do as you like

C. obey the criminals

D. keep silent

D

Believe it or not, visual illusion can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (锯齿形),painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

High speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related dangers are the greatest------curves(曲线), exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal(水平的) bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a road appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

73. The passage mainly discusses _____

A. a new way of highway speed control

B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new approach to training drivers

D. a new type of visual illusion

74. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former _____

A. can keep drivers awake

B. can cut road accidents in half

C. will have a longer effect on drivers

D. will look more attractive

75. The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety Plans to _____

A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas

B. change the road signs across the country

C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons

D. improve the Japanese road patterns

76. What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads? _____

A. They are falling out of use in the United States.

B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.

C. They are applicable only on broad roads.

D. They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.

E

It is hard to track the blue whale the ocean’s largest creature which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior.

So biologists were delighted early this year when with the help of the Navy they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning(覆盖) the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential(潜在的) enemies.

Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important, different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds focusing them in the same way a stethoscope(听诊器)does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean especially low-frequency ones can often travel thousands of miles.

77. The passage is chiefly about ____ .

A. an effort to protect an endangered marine species.

B. the civilian use of a military detection system.

C. the exposure of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon.

D. a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales.

78. The underwater listening system was originally designed ____ .

A. to trace and locate enemy vessels

B. to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptions

C. to study the movement of ocean currents

D. to replace the global radio communications network

79. It can be inferred from the passage that____.

A. new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whales

B. blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening system

C. opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military

technology

D. military technology has great potential in civilian use

80. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network﹖_____

A. It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists.

B. It has been replaced by a more advanced system.

C. It became useless to the military after the cold war.

D. It is indispensable (不可少的) in protecting endangered species.
