W: Those stories are also great for class use.

M: How is that?

W: Well, take a typical Dr. Hughes? book like The Cat in a Hat. It has a controlled vocabulary of about only 200 words.

M: So, that means the children get a lot of practice, using a small number of words over and over.

M: Oh, so what are you going to do?

W: Miss Harper advised me to delete Chapter Three, and enrich the other chapters. She also recommended a few books. I think that will be of great help. And I?m goi ng to the library this afternoon.

M: I wish I could have Miss Harper be my supervisor. She tends to help her students with patience.

W: Who is your supervisor, then?

M: Mr. Simpson. You should know that he is famous for being strict, and rather picky.

Section B

Passage One

uneasy feeling among many Japanese.

That product is foreign words. Gairaigo — words that come from outside — have been part of the Japanese

language for centuries. Mostly borrowed from English and Chinese, these terms are often changed into forms no longer understood by native speakers.

But in the last few years the trickle of foreign words has become a flood, and people fear the increasing use of foreign words is making it hard for the Japanese to understand each other and could lead to many people forgetting the good qualities of traditional Japanese.

“The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new,” says university lecturer and writer Takashi Saito. “By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new, which makes it easier for the media to pick up.”

“Experts often study abroad and use English terms when they speak with people in their own fields. Those terms are then included in government white papers,” said Muturo Kai, president of the National Language Research Institute. “Foreign words find their way easily into announcements made to the general public, when they should really be explained in Japanese.”

Against the flow of new words, many Jap anese are turning back to the study of their own language. Saito?s Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of the many language books that are now flying off booksellers? shelves.

“We are expecting to sell the books to young people,” said the writer, “but it turn s out they are more popular with the older generation, who seem uneasy about the future of the Japanese.”

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What advantage do foreign words have over traditional Japanese terms?

Foreign words, suited for announcements, make new subject easier等表明,本题可能与外来词的优点有关。 By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new…

[B]中的sound new对应的是seem new。

27. What do Takashi Saito say about Japanese people?

The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new可知,Takashi Saito认为日本人是很乐意学习新知识的,故答案为[C]。

[C]的内容是对the Japanese interest in anything new的同义转述。

28. Which plays an important part in the spread of foreign words?

【解析】选[D]。短文中提到的…which makes it easier for the media to pick up和Those terms are then included in government white papers表明,媒体和政府白皮书在外来词的传播上起到了很重要的作用,故答案为[D]。

【点睛】问题中的the spread of foreign words是听音重点。

29. What do we know about the book Japanese to Be Read Aloud?

【解析】选[A]。 Saito?s Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of many language books that are now flying off booksellers? shelves.可知,Japanese to Be Read Aloud这本书在日本很畅销,故答案为[A]。

Japanese to Be Read Aloud是听音重点。

Passage Two

Members of the working class have blue-collar jobs. They are construction workers, truck drivers, mechanics, steel workers, electricians, and the like. What makes this class differ from the lower class is, first, longer periods of employment — and therefore, more fixed incomes — and, second, employment in skilled or semi-skilled occupations, not unskilled ones. Although unemployment hits all levels of the American economy, including those of skilled and

semi-skilled workers, it is most common at the bottom of the class structure and increasingly less common at each level upward. They consider themselves to be respectable and hard-working and they look down upon members of the “lower” class, whom they often consider to be lazy, dishonest, and too ready to exploit public assistance.

Most people in the working class have at least high-school education. Many have some experience of college (especially community college), though few are college graduates. Unionization has helped the working class, but a rapidly changing economy and frequent periods of high unemployment make it difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly. Purchasing a house for people in this class is extremely difficult, although a certain percentage may receive houses from their parents. (Home-owning rises with social class.)

A greater number of the members of the working class take relatively little satisfaction in their jobs, because much of their work is ordinary and boring. As a result, they seek their main satisfaction in recreational activities. Many members of this class would like to earn enough money to leave their jobs and start their own businesses, though few make it. Many place their expectations on their children, hoping that they at least will rise in the ladder of success, American style.

Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

30. What is the feature of the working class?

由短文中提到的employment in skilled or semi-skilled occupations可知,答案为[D]。

31. What is said about most people in the working class?

短文中的difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly表明,工人的储蓄很难大幅增加,故答案为[D]。

【点睛】[D]的内容是对difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly的同义转述。

32. Why are many members from the working class not satisfied with their jobs?

【解析】选[C]。短文中提到because much of their work is ordinary and boring,由此可知,他们对工作不满意是因为工作普通、枯燥,即他们对工作不感兴趣,故答案为[C]。

Passage Three

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been

set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week, Hewlett Packard Company announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet, the greater demand for printers.

Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away.

“I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of because of recycling,” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What is the growing demand for paper in recent years largely due to?

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself可知,近年来对纸的需求量渐增是因为电脑和因特网的使用增加,故答案为[C]。

【点睛】短文中提到的pushes up demand for paper与问题中的growing demand for paper对应。

34. What do environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation?

【解析】选[B]。选项中的plant more...trees,find new materials, develop new printers等表明,本题可能考查解决办法。 The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood可知,环境保护者相信改变用纸状况的一种可能的方法是找到新的造纸材料,故答案为[B]。

【点睛】other than意为“除了”。

35. Why has Hewlett Packard Company decided to develop new technologies?

【解析】选[A]。 As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet, the greater demand for printers可知,Hewlett Packard发展新技术是因为看到了市场对打印机需求的增加,故答案为[A]。

M: We?re definitely going abroad, dear. But I don?t think we?ll go away in May. I doubt if we?ll have enough money saved up by then.

Q: Why can?t the couple go abroad in May?

I don?t think we?ll go away in May. I doubt if we?ll have enough money saved up by then可知,他们五月不能出去是因为钱不能攒够,即经济问题,故答案为[C]。

M: Sure, now are you interested in trying out for the water polo or swim team?

W: Well, come to think of it, I would like to join some kind of team. However, I was initially just wondering when

the pool had an open swim. I like to do laps a couple of times a week if possible. Now I?m thinking, water pol o sounds way more interesting.

M: Here?s a schedule for the times offered for open swimming. As you can see, there are several times a day you can go for a dip. Now, if you are seriously interested in water polo, the try-outs are in two weeks. There is, however,

a “warm-up” practice for the next two weeks at 9:30 pm every weeknight. So, if you think you are interested in

water polo, check these nights out as you can practice your skills before the official tryout.

W: Wow, that?s great! Lucky timing. Now, ho w much does all this cost?

M: All the fees are in that schedule I gave you, and they are quite reasonable.

W: Oh, OK.

M: The drop-in price for swimming is $2.25. However, it?s a much better deal to buy a ten punch card for $15. The water polo warm-up pract ice costs the same as the open swim. Now if you make the team, you needn?t pay these charges. However, there is a nominal fee of $45 to help pay for the referees.

W: That?s great, thanks a lot for all the information.

M: Hi. Professor Whitaker.

W: Oh, George, hello, come in, have a seat.

M: I just wanted to know if you?ve had a chance to look at my design proposal, the one on ergonomics.

W: As a matter of fact, I guess you want some feedback.

M: Yes, if you have time.

W: Well, I have a class in about ten minutes, but I suppose I can give you some pointers, maybe just to help you rethink your ideas before I hand the proposals back. Don?t look disappointed now. You had some very interesting ideas. It?s the first time I get a proposal to redesign the cell phone for ease of use.

M: No one else has made a similar proposal? I would have thought schemes had been made to change the typical cell phone design.

W: Well, that?s just it, George. Why did you decide on the cell phone?

M: I guess because I have such a hard time using it.

W: Have you done a sort of mini-survey to check what other people think?

M: Well…no, I hadn?t thought about that. I just assumed everybody else was having a hard time.

W: Although I think your concept for making the cell phone easier to use is definitely worth looking into, I didn?t think you had sufficient basis for suggesting that the design be changed to one easier to use. You might want to check how other cell phone users cope with the buttons, how they use their finger to send messages or make phone calls to an unrecorded number. Have you compared how you use it with the way others use theirs? Do you see what I?m getting at?

M: OK, Professor. I see your point.

W: Anyhow, let?s talk more tomorrow. I really must go.

M: OK, thanks for your advice.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

22. What’s the man’s real purpose of meeting the woman?

23. What’s the man’s design proposal about?

Make…more attractive,Adding more interesting games等等表明,本题可能与对手机进行改进有关。

24. What can be inferred about the man’s design proposal?

It,not well-written,lacked...research,ideas were weak等表明,本题与It的不足或缺陷有关。

25. What is the woman going to do after the conversation?

Section B

Passage One

University of Pittsburgh indicates spell-check software may level the playing field between people with differing levels of language skills, hampering the work of writers and editors who place too much trust in the software.

In the study, 33 undergraduate students were asked to proofread a one-page business letter — half of them using Microsoft Word with its red and green lines underlining potential errors. The other half did it in the old-fashioned way, using only their heads. Without grammar or spelling software, students with higher SAT verbal scores made, on average, five errors, compared with 12.3 errors for students with lower scores. Using the software, students with higher verbal scores reading the same passage made, on average, 16 errors, compared with 17 errors for students with lower scores.

Dennis Galletta, a professor of information systems at the Katz Business School, said spell-check software is so sophisticated that some have come to trust it too thoroughly. “It?s not a software problem, it?s a behavior problem,” he said. Microsoft technical specialist Tim Pash said grammar and spelling technology is meant to help writers and editors, not solve all their problems. The study found the software helped students find and correct errors in the letter, but in some cases they also changed phrases and sentences flagged by the software as grammatically suspicious, even though they were correct.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What are the students asked to do in the study?

【解析】选[C]。短文中提到在一项研究中,学生被要求校对一封商业信函(were asked to proofread a one-page business letter),[C]中的find out the mistakes of是对短文中proofread的同义转述,故答案为[C]。

27. Who made the most mistakes in the study?

Who made the most mistakes是解答本题的关键。

28. What is the speaker’s opinion of grammar and spelling software?

suggests holiday postcards are being emailed and texted into extinction. More than half of the 1,000 holiday-makers interviewed said they had decided to send fewer cards, turning instead to their electronic rivals. A quarter of the respondents dismissed postcards as old-fashioned and slow to arrive. A further 14% admitted that thinking of something to fill the space was too challenging, compared with a call home.

Thomson Holidays commissioned the poll. Its head, Chris Motters said that if the British postcard did become extinct, they would lose for ever something of great importance to the nation. He was backed by Marie Angelou of Sussex University, wh o had investigated the importance of sending and receiving postcards. “Postcards are nothing like phone calls, instant texting and direct photo shots via the mobile,” she said. “All these are useful, practical devices, but postcards offer something else, something additional that is not ordinary and simply functional, but imaginative and personal. They can evoke the real atmosphere of your holiday in a way that nothing else can do. They?re also for more than a moment —with some people adding them to collections built up over years and years.”

Postcard-collecting is third only to coins and stamps in Britain?s allied tradition of collecting things. The country?s uniquely postcard-related achievements include the invention in 1902 of the “divided back”. With the address taking up half of the writing area, brief postcard scribbles became the pioneer to today?s text messages. Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What do we learn from the passage?

30. What does Marie Angelou think of the electronic communication devices?

【解析】选[A]。 All these are useful, practical devices,其中的All these就是指前面提到的phone calls, instant texting and direct photo shots via the mobile,这三者均属于the electronic communication devices,由此可知,其特点就是useful和practical,故答案为[A]。

31. What are the top three collections in Britain?

Postcard-collecting is third only to coins and stamps in Britain?s…collecting things,由此可知,Postcard-collecting,coins and stamps是排在英国收集榜前三的物品,故答案为[C]。

【点睛】问题中the top three collections in Britain是对短文中提到的Postcard-collecting is third only to coins and stamps in Britain?s…collecting things的同义转述。

In the past industries had more freedom than they have now, and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them; often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.

Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of government and which showed need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of the workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disaster or the problems. New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who had died or become seriously ill.

Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U.S., for example, there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow. Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell. A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking laws which protect the health and safety of workers.

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

32. Comp ared with today’s industries, what were the industries in the past like?

In the past industries had more freedom than they have now,由此可知,过去的企业有更多的自主权,也就是说政府当局管控较松,故答案为[D]。

33. What did the government do years ago?

【解析】选[C]。短文中提到的…sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of government…however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who had died or become seriously ill表明,

34. What does the speaker say about industries in the U.S. today?

【解析】选[A]。 A third department looks…places…people work …reports any companies…breaking laws,由此可知,只要公司的工作环境不符合要求,有关部门就会上报,当然这家公司就会受到相应的惩罚。

35. What is the speaker mainly talking about?

to my words for once?

M: Shut up! You?re driving me mad with your constant complaining.

Q: What does the woman complain about the man?

对话中女士提到you just turn a deaf ear to me,[C]的内容是对女士的话的同义转述,故为答案。turn a deaf ear to sb. [A]和[B]是针对a deaf ear 和mad所设的干扰项。

12. M: There?s something different about Paula, but I can?t put my finger on it.

W: I heard that she had had cosmetic surgery. Want to bet she had a nose job?

Q: What probably happened to Paula?

对话中女士提到she had a nose job,[D]中的an operation on her nose是对a nose job的同义转述,故答案为[D]。 put one?s finger on sth. bet that…

13. W: Hi, Bob. Come on in. I?m glad you could make it to the party this evening. But where?s Jane?

M: She sends her apologies. She has a big exam tomorrow and wants to be sure she?s ready for it.

Q: What is Jane doing now?

She has a big exam tomorrow,结合女士提到的where?s Jane?

14. W: This school is lucky to have a teacher as good as Prof. Helen Johnson.

M: She is one in a million.

Q: What does the man mean?

【解析】选[A]。 She is one in a million,[A]中的rare是对one in a million的同义转述,故答案为[A]。

15. M: Congratulations! You certainly did quite well and I must say you deserve that grade.

W: Well, I really studied hard for that exam. I?ve been preparing for it for more than a month. Now, I can relax for a while.

Q: Why is the woman so happy?

【解析】选[A]。 You certainly did quite well(你确实考得相当好)可知,答案为[A]。女士只提到I can relax,并未提到going away,故排除干扰项[B]。sb. deserves sth.

16. W: You know, the Browns have invested all their money in stocks.

M: They may think that?s a wise move, but that?s the last thing I?d do.

Q: What?s the man?s opinion about the Browns? investment?

They may think that?s a wise move, but…可知,男士认为They(The Browns)的举动不明智,故答案为[C]。 the last thing sb. do意为“某人最不想做的事情”。

17. M: I?m frustrated. We?re supposed to do our assignment on the computer, but I have difficulty getting access to

the computers in the library.

W: I understand the way you feel. I?m looking forward to the day when I can afford to get my own.

Q: What does the woman mean?

I?m looking forward…afford to get my own.(我期望… [B]。afford to get sth.

18. M: The visiting economist is s peaking tonight, but Dr. Johnson doesn?t seem to think much of him.

W: That?s because Dr. Johnson comes from an entirely different school of thought.

Q: What do we learn from the woman?s remark?

Now you will hear the two long conversations.

M: I?m afraid not, madam. Not yet, anyhow. We?re still checking on stolen cars.

W: Mm.

M: Where do you think he?ll head for, madam?

W: Well, he definitely won?t try to leave the country yet. He may try to get a passport, and he?ll certainly need clothes and money. He?ll probably get in touch with Cornfield for those, so I expect he?ll make for Birmingham. M: Right. I?ll put some men on the house.

W: Yes, do that. Mind you, I doubt if he?ll show up there in person. Hammond?s no fool, you know. I should think he?ll probably use a telephone.

M: What about his wife?

W: Mm. I shouldn?t think he?ll go anywhere near her —though he might get her to join him after he?s left the country. And when he does leave, he probably won?t use a major airport, either. So you?d better notify the coastguard, and keep an eye on the private airfields.

M: Right, madam. I?d better get his description circulated.

W: Yes. He may change his appearance, of course. And John — be careful. He could be armed. And if I know Hammond, he certainly won?t give himself up without a fight.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. According to the woman, where might the wanted man first go?

head for和make for均意为“前往,动身去”。

20. How will the wanted man probably get in touch with Cornfield according to the women?

【解析】选[D]。对话中女士分析嫌疑犯不会show up there in person(亲自在那儿现身),而是probably use a telephone(可能会打电话),故答案为[D],其中的make a call对应女士提到的use a telephone。

21. What will the wanted man deal with his wife?

【解析】选[A]。对话中男士询问What about his wife?

[D] He will appear somewhere near her是根据I shouldn?t think he?ll go anywhere near her中的宾语从句设的干扰项,若没听到shouldn?t很容易选错。

22. According to the police, how will the wanted man try to leave the country?

【解析】选[A]。 由对话中女士提到的keep an eye on the private airfields可知,女士认为他会乘坐私人飞机逃跑,故答案为[A]。

M: Good evening, Alice. What is your question?

W: I?ve been studying Spanish for some years. I go to Spain on holiday sometimes. I?ve learnt quite a lot of grammar and vocabulary. But I find it very difficult to speak, and when I went to Spain this summer I couldn?t understand the Spanish people at all. I got really disheartened.

M: Yes, it is a problem. How long have you been studying Spanish?

W: About four years.

M: Yes, how exactly? Go to an evening class, using tape s …?

W: I?ve been going to an evening class and I?ve watched quite a lot of the BBC television programs.

M: Oh, they?re very good. Did you buy the BBC book?

W: No, we just use a different book in the class.

M: Yes, I see, Alice. I always think that learnin g a language is rather like learning to drive. Now, you couldn?t learn to drive a car by sitting in a classroom or watching television. I think what you need is a lot of practice in using the language.

W: That?s all very well if you live in the country where they speak the language, but I don?t.

M: Yes, I understand the problem. Though even if you live in the country where the language is spoken, you have to reach a certain standard before you are able to have conversations with the natives. I was thinking perhaps you might arrange with another student or students to have regular conversation practice.

W: I see what you mean. Thank you very much, professor.

M: You are welcome, Alice.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

23. What made Alice feel disheartened?

But I find it very difficult to speak…couldn?t understand the Spanish people…I got really disheartened可知,Alice感到沮丧的原因是她不能跟西班牙人很好地交流,故答案为[B]。

24. What is one of the ways Alice learns Spanish?

【解析】选[C]。选项均以By开头以及选项中的reading…book, going to an evening class, talk with Spanish people 等表明,本题可能考查学习西班牙语的方式。 I?ve watched…the BBC television programs可知,答案为[C]。

25. What does the professor think Alice needs?

I was thinking perhaps you…have regular conversation practice可知,教授给Alice的建议是让她多练习讲西班牙语,故答案为[D]。

Section B

As more women in the United States move up to the professional ladder, more are finding it necessary to make business trips alone. Since this is new for many, some trips are certainly in order. If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be much happier and probably enjoy the experience. If you will be eating a good meal alone, choose good restaurants. In the end, they will be much better for your digestion. You may also find it useful to call the restaurant in advance and state that you will be eating alone. You will probably get better service and almost certainly a better table. Finally, and most importantly, anticipate your travel needs as a businesswoman; this starts with lightweight luggage which you can easily manage even when fully packed. Take a folding case inside your suitcase; it will come in extremely handy for dirty clothes, as well as for business documents and papers you no longer need on the trip. And make sure you have a briefcase so that you can keep currently-required papers separate. Obviously, experience helps, but you can make things easier on yourself from the first by careful planning, so that right from the start you really can have a good trip!

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. Who is the speaker’s intended audience?

27. Why is lightweight luggage important for the traveling businesswoman?

短文中lightweight luggage之后的you can easily manage即为原因,故答案为[C]。

[C] It is easy to remove是对you can easily manage 的同义转述。

28. Where would this passage most likely appear?

【解析】选[A]。 In a magazine/guide/journal等表明,本题考查短文的出处。 (If you…If you…Finally…

main joy in life. He grew flowers of every color under the sun. He grew these flowers in order to enter them for competition. His greatest hope in life was to grow a rose of an entirely new color that would win him the silver cup for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers? glasshouse was close to a public path, which was always used by children walking to and from school. Boys were often attracted to throw a stone or two at his glasshouse. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or close by his glasshouse at the beginning and end of the school day.

However, it was not convenient or possible to be on guard all the time. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to prevent harm to his glasshouse, but nothing that he had done had been successful.

Then, just as he was giving up hope of ever winning the battle, and of growing the Rose of the Year, he had a truly wonderful idea. He put up a large notice made of good, strong wood, some meters away from the glasshouse, where it could be clearly seen from the path. He had painted on the board the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble. The boys were much more attracted to throw stones at the notice than at the glasshouse.

Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What was Mr. Flowers’ greatest hope?

His grea test hope…was to grow a rose of an entirely new color that…win…the silver cup…

that引导定语从句,先行词为a rose of an entirely new color。30. Why did the boys often throw a stone or two at the glasshouse?

【解析】选[A]。

31. Why was Mr. Flowers not able to prevent harm to his glasshouse?

However, it was not convenient or possible to be on guard all the time可知,Mr.

32. Why did the boys throw stones at Mr. Flowers’ notice?

【解析】选[A]。

things by himself by reading and experimenting. He built a lab for himself to work in, and he worked very hard in his sixty years of scientific activities. He made over a thousand inventions. Few inventors in the world could have such great success. Edison?s first invention was made in 1868. He was then a telegraph operator. He wished to work out a new method to improve the old telegraph system because it was impossible at that time for the system to send more than one message along the same line at the same time. He read all the works of Faraday, another great scientist, before starting his invention. Sometimes he didn?t go to bed and didn?t even stop to eat. He thought he had very much to do and there was no time to lose. Days and nights he was reading and reading. After he read through Faraday?s writings, he began his experiments. A few months later he succeeded in building a double transmitter and improved the old telegraph system.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

UNIT 5 VI. Further Listening and Speaking Task1: Hot Business Ideas Business ideas are all around you. Many business ideas come from a careful analysis of market and consumer needs. If you are interested in starting a business, but don’t know what product or service you might sell, here are some ways that may help you find one. First of all, you should study how to value to an existing product. The difference raw wood and finished wooden products is a good example of putting a product through an additional process that increases its value. But additional processes are not the only way value can be added. You might also add services, or combine one product with other products. For instance, a local farm which sells produce can also offer a vegetable delivery service—for a free. What business ideas can you develop along these lines? Focus on what products you might buy, and what you might do to them or with them to create a profitable business. Some people have another way of making profit. They improve an existing products or service. We all know that the person who can build a better mousetrap will make a lot of money. That person could be you! A local entrepreneur has created an improved version of the hula hoop. It’s bigger and heavier, so hula-hoopers can control it more easily and do more tricks. How did she come up with this business idea? She thought hula hooping would be a fun thing to do with her daughter, but found the commercially available product too flimsy. There are very few products or services that can’t be improved. Start generating business ideas by looking at the products and services you use and brainstorming ideas as to how they could be better. 1. What is the first way the speaker mentions that helps you produce a business idea? 2. Which of the following methods does the speaker NOT mention? 3. Why does the speaker mention the mousetrap? 4. Which of the following is true according to the passage? 5. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? Keys: 1.C 2.B 3.B 4.A 5.D Task 2: What do you know about business? Historically, the term business referred to activities or interests. By extension, the word became, as recently as the 18th century, synonymous with “an individual commercial enterprise”. When referring to activities, the terms business and industry sometimes appear interchangeable. Thus a fisherman might say either that he is in the “fishing business”, which is a bit colloquial or that he works in the “fishing industry”, which sounds somewhat formal. The word “trade” m ay serve as an equivalent of both “business” and “industry”. People establish business in order to perform economic activities. With some exceptions, such as non-profit organizations and institutions of the government, businesses exist to product profit. In other words, the owners and operators of a business have receiving or generating a financial return for their time, effort and capital as one of their main objectives. One can classify businesses in many different ways. In recent years, service businesses have become increasingly popular. They offer intangible products and typically have different, usually smaller, capital requirements than manufacturers. Distributors need smaller funds than manufacturers. Most laws specify the forms that a business can take, and a body of commercial law has been developed for each type. Some common types include partnerships, corporations, also called limited liability companies, and sole ownerships. Task3: An office boy or a billionaire? A jobless man applied for the po sition of “office boy” at Microsoft. The human resource manger interviewed him, and gave him a test: clean the floor. “You are engaged,” he said, “give me your email address, and I’ll send you the application form to fill and tell you when you will start.”The man replied, “I don’t have a computer or an email.”

I want some money. [Yes] I'll tell you quite frankly what it is. I'm wanting to buy a new car. [Yes] I don't know whether it's possible to raise any money from the bank in this way. B: Er, I see no reason why not. J: I've got an old car ... B: What's your proposition? J: Well, I've got this old car which is an eight-year-old Morris 1000, and I don't think there's any point in having it repaired any more because it just isn't worth it. I feel that I could probably get about a hundred pounds for it and then that means that I would need about another four hundred-odd, three hundred and fifty ... [Mhm] er, on top of that, to buy a, a, not a new car exactly, but a newer one. [Mhm] Um, ... B: Do you use the car for your business, for your work? J: Er; yes I do, up to a point. That is to say, sometimes I take it to work and sometimes I don't, because I'm almost within walking distance of the College. [Mhm] Does this have some bearing on the, on the question of whether I can get an overdraft? B: No, I don't think so. I, er, it was just a matter of interest that I asked you, really. You think three hundred and fifty? J: I would say about three hundred and fifty to four hundred. With the other, with the other [Yes] hundred pounds then it would be about, er, five hundred pounds; well, one can get quite a decent car for five hundred pounds [Quite] — second hand, of course. B: Quite. And what sort of period of time could you repay us? J: Well, erm, this rather depends on you. Um, I would like to ... I, er, what is the normal procedure for such a sum of money? B: Well, for such a sum of money we could expect repayment within twenty-four months. J: Two years. B: Two years. J: I see. B: We are lenders in the short term, remember, not long term. J: Yes. Er, is there ... Do you, do I pay interest on this? B: You will pay interest on — well, the type of loan I have in mind is a Personal Loan, as I assume you've got no form of collateral to offer.
