I always experienced guilt when I passed by without giving a coin or two to a beggar.

My conscience was pricked again on a tour of Venice in 2010. I had taken refuge(庇护) from the crowds in a quiet canal-side café. Outside the café was an old woman kneeling on the ancient cobbled stones, begging. Steady streams of tourists were walking past her. A lone young back-packer stood away from the throng drinking something, but I noticed he was also observing the woman.

A tourist group glanced at the woman and walked on. Another group of tourists arrived and, again, walked past her. The backpacker watched. Then, as I prepared to leave, I stopped at the sight of the backpacker stepping forward an d placing some money in the woman’s cup. He did this rather ostentatiously(炫耀地), just before the arrival of another tourist group. I watched as the leader of the group stopped and put some money in the cup. Having been shown the way, other tourists followe d suit and added more coins to the woman’s cup.

The young backpacker repeated this process in front of the next tour party going past.

Once again, the subtle peer (同伴)pressure worked on the tourists, who all added coins to the cup. His work done, the young man walked over to the old beggar woman, patted her shoulder and said, “I hope that helps a bit.”

I don’t know if the woman understood his English or realized what had just happened, but I did. I placed some money in the woman’s cup and continued my trave ls, light-hearted after witnessing such an astute act of caring.

What do working mothers worry about the most? It’s the kids of course. Whatever the setting, the question I get asked the most is “Will the kids be alright?” It’s made me realize that we tend to look at the glass half-empty rather than half-filled when it comes to mixing work and family. We forget about all the benefits that we bring to our children when we work——and I’m not talking about the obvious financial benefits, although these of course shouldn’t be taken for granted.

About a year ago I remember getting a call from the school just as I was pulling up to the house aft er having driven 20 minutes to the school and 20 minutes back. “Mrs. Brown Quinn, your son asked us to call. He forgot his sports clothes. Can you come back to the school and drop them off?”I was exasperated(恼火)! I had already spent 40 minutes in aggressive weekday morning traffic. I replied, “Sorry, I’m working at the moment. I’m afraid my son

needs to learn to be organized.”

Being a good parent requires delivering tough love sometimes. Kids need to learn to be independent. It can be a cruel and competitive world out there. Seeking interests, including business, outside of your kids, can give you that extra idea that you need not care for your kids with attention. This benefit of working isn’t always immedia tely evident.

It wasn’t until our daughter went away to college that she realized why we(a dual(双的)career couple)had raised her in the way that we did. “Mom, I can’t believe how so many of my friends struggle to manage things on their own. They are constantly calling their parents for help.” You’ll love that moment! After all those years of complaining about why you don’t do this or why you don’t give them that, your kids realize that tough love has made them better people.

60. The author refused to drop off her son’s sports clothes because ______.

A. she was caught in heavy traffic

B. she was busy working

C. she thought her son was lying

D. she wanted her son to be organized

61. How can kids become better people according to the author?

A. By giving them all your attention.

B. By giving them freedom to do things on their own.

C. By showing them your deep love.

D. By giving them tough love.

62. The daughter’s attitude towards the author is ______ when she grows up.

A. complaining

B. caring

C. understanding

D. disappointed

63. The purpose of the author is to ______.

A. analyze a special benefit of working

B. advise us to blend work and family

C. argue for working mothers

D. describe her own experience in raising children

(Reuters)—Ceremonies to celebrate divorces have gained momentum(势头)in Japan after the massive March earthquake and tsunami, followed by an ongoing nuclear crisis, caused unhappy couples to reassess their lives.

The ceremony to mark a couple's transition to being single again costs 55,000 yen ($690),includes a buffet meal and culminates with the ritual smashing of their wedding rings with a

Tomoharu Saito, who took part in Tokyo with his wife Miki days before they were set to file for divorce, said crushing the rings felt cathartic.(情感宣泄的).

“I did not think the ring could be crushed that easily, but it did,”he said.

“I was shocked but at the same time, I feel i t helped me make a clean break.”

The ceremony also includes a “divorce dress,”and Miki Saito chose a daisy-yellow summer dress. In Japan, daisies are believed to symbolize an a “friendly relationship”.

Designer Akiue Go said he created the dress with emphasis on the back for a specific reason.

“I designed this dress so the woman's back looks the most beautiful when she turns around and walks away,” he said。

Hiroki Terai, a 31-year-old former salesman, spotted a gap in the market and pioneered the divorce ceremony two years ago. Since then, he's celebrated more than 80 breakups.

Requests for the ceremony have tripled since the March 11 9.0 magnitude quake set off a massive tsunami.

“The March 11 disaster made many couples rethink their priorities. Some found that work was a higher priority to them than family, and this helped people gain the confidence to decide on a divorce,” Terai said.

“Those who want an amicable divorce are doing these ceremonies.”

Miki Saito said the earthquake made her realize she wanted to be closer to her parents, who live in northeastern Japan in one of the areas badly affected by the quake.

“After the quake, my desire to go back and live with my parents grew stronger,” she said.

Guest Hiroko Tada was present for both the beginning and the end of the Saitos' marriage. “I'd say congratulations to the amicable divorce,” she said. “I could have never imagined this day would come because I was at their wedding, but since they did break up, this is one of the best ways to do it.”

The European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporar-ily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代)of clones from the United States and elsewhere.

The report from the European Commission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat.

The Commission said a temporary five-year EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade.

“Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare,” EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.

Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable, Dalli said.

“Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products)from third countries allowing the cloning technique,” the report said.

“We’re not going to regulate for the world,” Dalli added.

But animal welfare groups criticized the Commission’s decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries.

“We do not accept the Commission’s position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals, as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, direct or of the Eurogroup for Animals.

67. From the passage we can infer that the ban is .

A. justified

B. welcome

C. controversial

D. meaningless

68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The ban is permanent.

B. The imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned.

C. Animal welfare groups support the ban.

A. The origin of food derived from the offspring of clones is Untraceable.

B. Food from cloned animals is safe.

C. The issue is for animal welfare.

D. The pressure comes from third countries.

70. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. The plans of the European Union

B. A temporary five-year EU ban

C. The EU proposes a ban on animal cloning for food

Each of us experiences setbacks in life. all of which provide us with valuable lessons about the human condition. 71 You’ve heard the adage many times about turning lemons into lemonade, right? Well, this sentiment is absolutely true and can tremendously improve your quality of life.

Turning a negative experience into something more positive isn’t always easy. In fact, some of the most tragic moments in our life seem never. ending when we aye experiencing them. However, there is always a way to take a bad situation and extract something positive from it. 72

1. “This too shall pass.” That is what you should initially tell yourself when something bad happens. Repeat those words in your head and even aloud if it helps. The important thing is that you do not panic, as this will only exasperate the negative experience. Every bad moment in your life will end, which can be a comfort during the worst time.

2. 73 Some people believe that everything happens for a reason . While you may not buy into that philosophy, you can at least give each experience a purpose. Try to think of a lesson that the experience has taught you. Did you meet a new friend while going through this time? Did you learn how not to do something?

3. Keep your sense of humor handy. This applies to everything in your life. 74 Even if it isn’t appropriate to joke about something aloud, you can make humorous observations in

your mind to keep you on a positive track.

4. Don’t dwell on negative moments. You will not help anyone by stewing in a moment that has already passed. Whether you were hurt, embarrassed or both, the negative emotions you felt before should not remain fresh in your psyche. If you continue to dwell in the negative, you will never find your way out again.

5. Set a new goal to work towards. As I said before, you should never dwell in your past negative experiences. Some times it is hard to get out of a funk. However. 75 ,This will give you something good to strive for and will take your mind off whatever has occurred.A.The best way to rise us from a bad experience and move on from a situation is to set new, positive goals to focus on.

B.Failure is the mother of success.

C.Almost every situation allows for a bit of levity, so remain humble and try seeing the humorous side of things.

D.Find purpose in the experience.

E.Setbacks in life are necessary and unavoidable and we have to get used to them.

F.It is not the setback it self that influences your future, but rather how to react to the negative situation.

G.Below aye five ways to do just that.

lose“迷失”;absorb“吸收”;dress“穿衣服,装饰”;cover“覆盖,掩盖”。

A。

根据第二段的“The ceremony to mark a couple’stransition to being

single again costs 55,000 yen($690)”和第九段的“Since then,he’s celebrated more than 80 breakups”提供的数据计算可知D项正确。

由文中第一段的“Ceremonies to celebrate divorces have gained

momentum(势头)in Japan after the massive March earthquake and tsunami”以及第

十段中的“Requests for the ceremony have tripled since the March 1 l 9.0 magnitude quake set off a massive tsunami”可推知B项正确。

Justified“合乎情理的”;welcome“受欢迎的”;meaningless“没有意义的”。68.
