coverletters

General Guidelines
• 4. Clearly Describe Ways You Will Contribute After carefully reading the job description, write a paragraph outlining one or two specific examples of how your skills and experiences will fit the company’s needs. • 5. Match, But Don’t Reiterate, Your Resume This is one point many job seekers find tricky. You should never claim experience in your cover letter that isn’t reflected on your resume. At the same time, your cover letter shouldn’t simply restate your resume. When you explain the ways you will contribute, refer to an experience or skill on your resume to show how you will add value to the company. • 6. Don’t Say You’re Not Qualified Even if you think the position is out of your reach, your job is to convince the recruiter you are qualified. If the recruiter thinks you’re unqualified, a confessional letter is not going to get you interview. Keep the letter positive by focusing on your transferable skills and unusual accomplishments.

It can demonstrate your communication skills, showcase your qualifications, and show your enthusiasm for the position. A poorly written cover letter, on the other hand, can cost you the job even if you have all thequalifications. So, how do you write an effective cover letter? Here are some tips:1. Make sure to mention the specific job you are applying for and how your skills and experience match the job requirements.2. Address the hiring manager or recruiter by name if possible. Avoid using generic salutationslike "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam." If you cannot find the name of the person who will be reading your cover letter, then use a generic salutation like "Dear Hiring Manager."3. Start with a strong opening. Your opening should grab the reader's attention and make them want to read more. You can start with a personal anecdote, a question, or a statement that shows your enthusiasm for the job.4. cover letter注意事项及范文

Covering letters

Cover Letters are Necessary! Cover letters are simply a letter of introduction. In these letters you are explaining who you are and why you are writing to the resume reader. It is a matter of courtesy that you introduce yourself when you are requesting something of them, in this case an interview.COVER LETTER是简历天然的伴侣。

Who are you and where are you?" This should be stated in the first paragraph. "Where did you hear about me?" "What can you do for me? What can you provide relevant to the job?"一般你可以通过INTERNET或其它途径(newspapers and magazines, word -of-mouth or the public library.

Cover LettersWhat is the purpose of a cover letter?A cover letter is a method of introducing yourself to the company for whom you would like to work. If you do not make a clear and positive first impression, you might be eliminated from a position without even speaking with the employer. In general, your letter will either be a letter of application or a letter of inquiry depending on whether or not you are writing to apply for an open position. A letter of application will include specific details about the position for which you are applying; whereas a letter of inquiry is asking the employer to consider you for any existing or future positions that suit your experience.Response to an AdvertisementThis is perhaps the most common type of cover letter, or at least the one most often thought of when hearing the term. A response to an advertisement will include: ∙The company name and address∙ A specific person to whom to address the letter∙How the candidate heard about the position (where it was listed)∙The name of the position the candidate is applying for∙Information in the letter that addresses the requirements listed in the job posting Response to a Blind AdvertisementIn this type of job posting, the name of the company is not included. For those already employed, this can be tricky as it is not known if the person's current company is the one placing the ad. For new job seekers this is not an issue. Letters responding to a blind advertisement will include:∙The address provided∙ A generic salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager"∙How the candidate heard about the position (where it was listed)∙The name of the position the candidate is applying for∙Information in the letter that addresses the requirements listed in the job postingCover Letter TemplateContact InformationThe first section of your cover letter should include information on how the employer can contact you. If you have contact information for the employer, include that. Otherwise, just list your information.Your NameYour AddressYour City, State, Zip CodeYour Phone NumberYour Email AddressDateEmployer Contact InformationNameTitleCompanyAddressCity, State, Zip CodeSalutationDear Mr./Ms. (Last Name):Body of Cover LetterThe body of your cover letter lets the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, and how you will follow-up.First Paragraph:The first paragraph of your letter should include information on why you are writing. Mention the position you are applying for. Include the name of a mutual contact, if you have one. Be clear and concise regarding your request.Middle Paragraphs:The next section of your cover letter should describe what you have to offer the employer. Convince the reader that they should grant the interview or appointment you requested in the first paragraph. Make strong connections between your abilities and their needs. Mention specifically how your skills and experience match the job you are applying for. Remember, you are interpreting your resume, not repeating it. Try to support each statement you make with a piece of evidence. Use several shorter paragraphs or bullets rather than one large block of text.Final Paragraph:Conclude your cover letter by thanking the employer for considering you for the position. Include information on how you will follow-up. State that you will do so and indicate when (one week's time is typical). You may want to reduce the time between sending out your resume and follow up if you fax or e-mail it.Complimentary Close:Respectfully yours,Signature:Handwritten Signature (for a mailed letter)Typed Signature。

Teaching aims:

Dear Ms. Markley:
Introductory Paragraph
Your first paragraph should: • Get the reader’s attention, stimulate interest, and be appropriate for the job you are seeking. • Make your goal clear to readers. • Preview the rest of your letter. Highlight the qualifications you will discuss throughout the letter.
Mailing Your Letter With Your Resume
• Coordinate the design of your letter with the design of your resume. • Be sure to send both to prospective employers; they both reveal different kinds of information about you.
Solicited Application Letters
• Solicited application letters are letters written in response to an advertised job opening. • It is appropriate to mention where you learned of the opening in the first paragraph.
Key Points to Remember
• Appeal to company values, attitudes, goals, projects, etc. • Elaborate on the information in your resume. • Provide evidence of your qualifications. • Proofread carefully for grammatical and typographical errors. The letter should be error-free.
Unsolicited Application Letters
• Unsolicited application letters are written to companies that have not posted a job opening. • It is important to gain the reader’s attention and persuade them that you can contribute to the company’s goals.
Organizing Your Letter
• In general, cover letters should be no longer than one typed page. • Organize your body paragraphs to emphasize your strongest and most relevant qualifications. Only include the two or three strongest qualifications from your resume. • Make it easy for readers to scan your letter by beginning each paragraph with a topic sentence.
Using Active Language—Do’s
• Use concrete words to describe your experience. • Use present tense to discuss current activities and past tense for previous job duties or accomplishments. • Be as specific as possible in descriptions; list dollar amounts and figures when you can. Vague: I worked as a researcher at Oncogene. Specific: As a researcher, I conducted lab experiments on innovative cancer drugs and composed laboratory reports. Weak: I attempted to attract customers. Strong: I initiated a program to attract customers to BankOne, which resulted in a 5% increase in new accounts for the month of June.
Writing Cover Letters
What Is a Cover Letter?
A cover letter expresses your interest in and qualifications for a position to a prospective employer.
What Should My Cover Letter Accomplish?
As a member of one of the fastest growing publishing houses in the world, do you have an opening in your acquisitions department for a recent college graduate with a major in English and publishing and editing experience?
Goals of the Body Paragraphs
• Highlight your strongest qualifications for the position for which you are applying. • Demonstrate how these qualifications will benefit the employer. • Refer employers to your enclosed resume.
Concluding Your Letter
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these and other qualifications with you. If you are interested, please contact me at (317) 5550118, or feel free to leave a message. • Conclude by asking for a personal interview. • Be flexible regarding a date and time for the interview. • Be specific about how the interviewer should contact you. • Include a thank you.
• Your cover letter should introduce the main points of your resume. • It should also help you to “sell” your qualifications to the prospective employer.
