第三部分阅读理解(共15小题)

A

Junk food is everywhere. We’re eating way too much of it. Most of us know what we’re doing and yet we do it anyway.

So here's a suggestion offered by two researchers at the Rand Corporation: Why not take a lesson from alcohol control policies and apply them to where food is sold and how it’s displayed?

"Many policy measures to control obesity (肥胖症)assume that people consciously and rationally choose what and how much they eat and therefore focus on providing information and more access to healthier foods," note the two researchers.

"In contrast," the researchers continue, "many regulations that don't assume people make rational choices have been successfully applied to control alcohol, a substance --- like food --- of which immoderate consumption leads to serious health problems."

Th e research references studies of people’s behavior with food and alcohol and results of alcohol restrictions, and then lists five regulations that the researchers think might be promising if applied to junk foods. Among them:

Density restrictions: licenses to sell alcohol aren't handed out unplanned to all comers but are allotted (分配)based on the number of places in an area that already sell alcohol. These make alcohol less easy to get and reduce the number of psychological cues to drink.

Similarly, the researchers say, being presented with junk food stimulates our desire to eat it. So why not limit the density of food outlets, particularly ones that sell food rich in empty calories? And why not limit sale of food in places tha t aren’t primarily food sto res?

Display and sales restrictions: California has a rule prohibiting alcohol displays near the cash registers in gas stations, and in most places you can’t buy alcohol at drive-through facilities. At supermarkets, food companies pay to have their wares in places where they're easily seen. One could remove junk food to the back of the store and ban them from the shelves at checkout lines. The other measures include restricting portion sizes, taxing and prohibiting special price deals for junk foods, and placing warning labels on the products.

56. What do the Rand researchers think of many of the policy measures to control obesity?

A. They should be implemented effectively.

B. They provide misleading information.

C. They are based on wrong assumptions.

D. They help people make rational choices.

57. Why do policymakers of alcohol control place density restrictions?

A. Few people are able to resist alcohol’s temptations.

B. There are already too many stores selling alcohol.

C. Drinking strong alcohol can cause social problems.

D. Easy access leads to customers' over-consumption.

58. What is the purpose of California’s rule about alcohol display in gas stations?

A. To effectively limit the density of alcohol outlets.

B. To help drivers to give up the habit of drinking.

C. To prevent possible traffic jams in nearby areas.

D. To get alcohol out of drivers’ immediate sight.

59. What is the general guideline the Rand researchers suggest about junk food control?

A. Guiding people to make rational choices about food.

B. Enhancing p eople’s awareness of their own health.

C. Borrowing ideas from alcohol control measures.

D. Resorting to economic, legal and psychological means

B

It’s said that someone somewhere in the world is always eating sus hi (寿司). It’s the healthy snack of choice for people of all cultures.

Ingredients

200 grams of raw salmon (三文鱼) in one piece (other raw fish like tuna is fine)

2 cups of rice

2 cups of water

1/2 cups of vinegar

1 teaspoon of salt

2 tablespoons of sugar

Wasabi (芥末酱)

Japanese soy sauce (酱油) Instructions

Wash your hands before you start.

Put the sugar and salt in the vinegar (醋) to make a mixture. Keep it in a container.

Boil the rice in the 2 cups of water. This is a little less water than usual to make the rice slightly harder.

Leave the rice to cool down for 10 minutes after it’s boiled.

Put the rice into a large container. Add half of the mixture.

Mix it all together with your hands. Keep mixing until it sticks together. You may need to add more of the mixture.

Let the rice cool down.

Wet your hands. Make balls of rice. Each one should be about the size of a table tennis ball.

Take a sharp knife and cut the salmon into thin slices. Each slice should be about 3 mm thick.

With the rice ball in one hand, press the cut salmon on top. Make it into a rectangular (矩形的) shape.

Put the sushi on a plate.

Put a little wasabi and soy sauce in a small dish.

Attention

The biggest concern people have about sushi is its freshness. Raw fish can attract bacteria, which can make us ill or even cause death. When choosing a whole fish, the eyes should be clear. The skin should be bright and smooth and not breaking-up. When choosing cut fish, the meat ought not to give off an unpleasant smell. It should also “bounce back” at you when you touch it. In other wo rds, it should look fairly hard. Don’t buy sushi in the street. Buy from shops or supermarkets that others can recommend.

Lots of wasabi also helps kill bacteria. It also makes your head want to explode.

Serve the sushi to your friends. It goes

well with green tea.

60. To make sushi more delicious, you may as well ______.

A. pour some green tea into rice

B. eat it with a bit soy sauce and wasabi

C. add as much wasabi as possible to get a healthy snack

D. choose cooked fish rather than fish that are uncooked

61. What does this passage mainly discuss?

A. Making sushi is easy and fun

B. popular Japanese fast food

C. Making your own sushi

D. There are different recipes for making sushi

62. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. Sushi has become a multi-billion industry

B. Making sushi is a demanding job for every one

C. Sushi is popular not only in Japan but also in China

D. You should buy sushi in shops or supermarkets only on people’s recommendation

C

Barack Obama urged congressional leaders on Monday to act quickly to pass a huge stimulus package for the U.S. economy. He met with a bipartisan (concerning or involving two different political parties) group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Later he met individually with Democratic and Republican House and Senate leaders and spoke to a bipartisan leadership gathering. In comments to reporters early on Monday, he emphasized the urgency of finalizing economic legislation (立法). “We have got an extraordinary economic challenge ahead of us,” he said, “We are expecting a sobering job report at the end of the week. Nancy Pelosi and her staff have been extraordinarily helpful in working with our team so that we can shape an economic recovery and reinvestment plan that starts putting people back to work.”

Mr. Obama wants tax cuts for individual Americans and businesses to make up a significant portion of expected legislation. This could involve as much as $300 billion of a bill that is likely to go beyond $700 billion and include aid to cash-poor U.S. states, and money for alternative energy and a range of infrastructure (基础设施) projects. Later, Mr. Obama said he expects to be able to sign legislation as soon as the end of this month, adding that quick action is necessary to “break the drive of the U.S. economic depression”.

Emerging later from bipartisan talks with Mr. Obama, Nancy Pelosi said lawmakers discussed with the president how to pass a stimulus package as quickly as possible. “An economic recovery package that will create jobs immediately and will grow the economy and that is what we talked about today,” said Nancy Pelosi. “How we could do this fast, deliberatively and to act upon it soon.” Just how soon that would be, Pelosi would not say.

How much support Democrats can obtain from Republicans will depend on the details. But the severity of the U.S. economic depression has created considerable bipartisan backing for quick action. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid said: “There are investments that we need to make on behalf of the American people to turn around this economy. We felt very good about the meeting; we ar e confident that we can do this and we have to do this.”

“I think the best thing I can do is to decline to comment on what they are going to do going

forward,” said Dana Perino. “Obviously, we think that tax cuts were the right way to help our economy get out of the economic depression that this president inherited and we know that tax cuts can stimulate innovation.” Asked by reporters how large the economic stimulus package might be, Senate Majority Leader Reid said Obama indicated that all but one of some 28 economists advising him had said it should range from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion.

63. Barack Obama urged congressional leaders and met with bipartisan leaders to _____.

A. take over the White House

B. end economic decline

C. understand each other better

D. negotiate political issues

64. If the stimulus package is passed quickly and successfully, it can _____.

A. obtain support from Republicans

B. finalize economic legislation

C. enhance America’s international position

D. provide job opportunities

65. What is the bipartisan leaders’ attitude towards this meeting?

A. Uncertain.

B. Hopeful.

C. Disappointed.

D. Indifferent.

66. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The best way out of the economic depression is tax cuts.

B. The Republic Party plays the key role in coping with the economic depression.

C. Democrats and Republicans will team up in the economic depression.

D. When the stimulus package will be passed is known to the lawmakers.

D

“To be or not to be.” Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be ---- to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly (丰富地) and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying, “I think, therefore I am.”

But the best definition of existence I ever saw was one written by another philosopher who said, “To be is to be in relations.” If this is true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity (强度) of our relations. Unfortunately, we are so constituted (组成) that we get to love our routine. But other than our regular occupation, how much are we alive? If you are interested only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned ---- poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs ---- you are dead.

On the contrary, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest ---- even more, a new accomplishment ---- you increase your power of life. No one who is deeply interested in different kinds of subjects can remain unhappy. The real pessimist is the person who has lost interest.

Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loses a friend. But we gain new life by contacts with new friends, and new ideas and thoughts, too. Where your thoughts are, there will be your life also. If your thoughts are limited only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to your narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow restricted life. But if you are interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interested people; if you listen intently (专注地) to fine music, you are always away from immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination.

To be or not to be ---- to live intensely and richly, or merely to exist, depends on ourselves.

Let us widen and intensify (增强) our relations. While we live, let us live.

67. What does the author mainly want to do by this passage?

A. The author wants to argue against an idea.

B. The author wants to put forward an idea.

C. The author wants to introduce some famous sayings.

D. The author wants to explain some famous sayings.

68. What does the underlined word “pessimist” most probably mean?

A. It means somebody who always expects the worst to happen.

B. It means somebody who is always interested in making new friends.

C. It means somebody who always lives in a world of passion and imagination.

D. It means somebody who likes to live a rich and abundant life.

B. Exposing ourselves to new friends, ideas and thoughts.

C. Getting along with those highly interested people.

B. I think, therefore I am.

C. To be is to be in relations.

D. A man dies as often as he loses a friend.

第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题)

Family structure had changed dramatically over the last 50 years. The following are the types of families existing today.

Nuclear Family

The nuclear family is a traditional type of family structure. This family type consists of mother, father and children. The nuclear family was long held in esteem by society as being the ideal in which to raise children because children in nuclear families receive strength and stability from the two-parent structure.

Single Parent Family

The single parent family consists of one parent raising one or more children on his own. When only one parent is at home, it may be a struggle to find childcare, as there is only one parent working. This limits income and opportunities in many cases, although many single parent families have help from relatives and friends.

Extended Family

The extended family structure consists of two or more adults who are related, either by blood or marriage, living in the same home. This family includes many relatives living together and working toward common goals. This type of family structure may be formed due to financial difficulties or because older relatives are unable to care for themselves alone.

Childless Family

While most people think of family as including children, there are couples who either cannot or choose not to have children. Many childless families take on the responsibility of pet ownership or have extensive contact with their nieces and nephews as a substitute for having their own children.

Stepfamily

Over half of all marriages end in divorce, and many of these individuals choose to get remarried. This creates the stepfamily, which involves two separate families merging into one new unit. Stepfamilies tend to have more problems, such as adjustment periods and discipline issues.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to what is the best type of family structure. As long as a family is filled with love and support for one another, it tends to be successful and thrive.

The New grading system in Our School

In order to help students develop their abilities in all fields, our school now has asked the teachers to make some changes in the grading system. This chart shows how it works.

The students’ final score will be made up of 5 parts. About 30% of it will come from their test results. The rest of the score is decided by the performances of the students in the following parts: 20% comes from your notes, and another 20% is decided by how you do your homework. If you take an active part in classroom activities, you can get another 20% of the score. Teamwork in class is also important. If you want a higher score, you should be good at working together with your classmates.

In my opinion, our school has made a good decision. This new grading system will certainly help to improve ourselves in all ways.
