【篇一:公共英语三级阅读题和答案】

t>students of united states history, seeking to identify the circumstances that encouraged the emergence of feminist movements, have thoroughly investigated the mid-nineteenth-century american economic and social condition that affected the status of women. these historians, however, have analyzed less fully the development of specifically feminist ideas and activities during the same period. furthermore, the ideological origins of feminism in the united state have been obscured because, even when historians did take into account those feminist ideas and activities occurring within the united states, they failed to recognize that feminism was then a truly international movement actually centered in europe. american feminist activists who have been described as “solitary” and “individual theorists” were in reality connected to a movement — utopian socialism — which was already popularizing feminist ideas in europe during the two decades that culminated in the first women’s rights conference held at seneca falls, new york, in 1848. thus, a complete understanding of the origins and development of nineteenth-century

feminism in the united states requires that the geographical focus be widened to include europe and that the detailed study already made of social conditions be expanded to include the ideological development of feminism.

saint-simon’s followers, many of whom were women, based their feminism on an interpretation of his project to reorganize the globe by replacing brute force with the rule of spiritual powers. the new world order would be ruled together by a male, to represent reflection, and a female, to represent sentiment. this complementarity reflects the fact that, while the saint-simonians did not reject the belief that there were innate differences between men and women, they nevertheless foresaw an equally important social and political role for both sexes in their utopia.only a few saint-simonians opposed a definition of sexual equality based on gender distinction. this minority believe that individuals of both sexes were born

similar in capacity and character, and they ascribed male-female differences to socialization and education. the envisioned result of both currents of thought, however, was that women would enter public life in the new age and that sexual equality would reward men as well as women with an improved way of life.

1. it can be inferred that the author consider those historians who describe early feminists in the united states as “solitary” to be

[a] insufficiently familiar with the international origins of

nineteenth-century american feminist thought.

[b] overly concerned with the regional diversity of feminist ideas in the period before 1848.

[c] not focused narrowly enough in their geographical scope.

[d] insufficiently aware of the ideological consequences of the seneca falls conference.

2. the author’s attitude toward european historians who have studied the saint-simonians is primarily one of

[a] approval of the specific focus of their research.

[b] disapproval of their lack of attention to the issue that absorbed most of the saint-simonians’ energy after 1832.

[c] approval of their general focus on social conditions.

[d] disapproval of their lack of attention to links between the saint-simonians and their american counterparts.

3. the author mentions all of the following as characteristic of the saint-simonians except

[a] the group included many women among its members.

[b] the group believed in a world that would be characterized by sexual equality.

[c] the group was among the earliest european socialist groups.

[d] most members believed that women and men were inherently similar in ability and character.

4. it can be inferred from the text that the saint-simonians envisioned a utopian society having which of the following characteristics?

[a] it would be worldwide.

[b] it would emphasize dogmatic religious principles.

[c] it would most influence the united states.

[d] it would have armies composed of women rather than of men.

5. according to the text, which of the following would be the most accurate

description of the society envisioned by most saint-simonians?

[a] a society in which women were highly regarded for their extensive education.

[b] a society in which the two genders played complementary roles and had equal status.

[c] a society in which women did not enter public life.

[d] a social order in which a body of men and women would

rule together on the basis of their spiritual power.

certain animals have an intuitive awareness of quantities. they know without analysis the difference between a number of objects ands a smaller number. in his book the natural history of selbourne (1786), the naturalist gilbert white tells how he surreptitiously removed one egg a day to make up plover’s nest, and how the mother laid another egg each day to make up for the missing one. he noted that other species of birds ignore the absence of a single egg but abandon their nest if more than one egg has been removed. it has also been noted by naturalist that a certain type of wasp always provides five-never four, never six-caterpillars for each of their eggs so that their young have something to eat when the eggs hatch. research has also shown that both mice and pigeons can be taught to distinguish between odd and even numbers of food pieces.

these and similar accounts have led some people to infer that creatures other than human can actually count. they also point to dogs that have been taught to respond to numerical questions with the correct number of barks, or to horses that seem to solve arithmetic problem by stomping their hooves number of times.animals respond to quantities only when they are connected to survive as a species-as in the case of the eggs-or survive as individuals -as in the case of food. there is on transfer to other situations or from concrete reality to the

abstract notion of numbers. animals can “count” only when the objects are present and only when the numbers involved are small-no more than seven or eight. in lab experiments, animals trained to count one kind of object were unable to count any other type. the objects, not the numbers, are what interest them. animal’s admittedly

remarkable achievements simply do not amount to evidence of counting, nor do they reveal more than innate instinct, refined by the genes of successive generations, or the results of clever, careful conditioning by trainers.

Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "Smith Enterprises", she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no reply. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no answer. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had the interview with Mr. Smith, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. In the front of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Made. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. Smith, who would arrive at any moment. Then Made realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. Smith arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35,so that his staff knew exactly when to start working. Made felt nervous when she knocked at the door because______. A it was her first day in a new job B she was a little bit late for work C she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong place D there was no answer from inside the office

The Princess of Cambridge has finally been revealed to the world as Charlotte Elizabeth Dianain a touching nod to her grandfather, her grandmother and her great-grandmother. The name has long tradition which can be traced hack to the royal background. Charlotte, derived from French name, pays tribute to her grandfather, prince of Wales. And Charlotte is also Kate's sister, Pippa Middleton's middle name. Kensington Palace revealed the royal baby's full name yesterday after days of speculation and close friends of Princess Diana immediately said the choice means the spirit of Prince William's beloved mother 'lives on'. William was, however, clear that his baby girl should not have Diana as a first name. "It would have been a millstone around her neck," said one of the princess' s longtime friends. Within minutes of the name being announced this afternoon, Diana's closest friend Rosa Monckton said: "Diana's spirit lives on in her sons, and now her name lives on in her granddaughter 'Charlotte Elizabeth Diana'. "Diana was the godmother of Mrs. Monckton's daughter Dominica The British citizens show their satisfaction with this name via Intemet. They said it is the perfect name for their lovely princess.

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another's hands for reassurance. They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger_cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts. 1.In this passage, the author wants to tell ________. 2014年公共英语三级阅读理解专项试题(一)

公共英语三级阅读理解专项试题(一) 一、Reading Comprehension(共60小题,共120.0分)Read the following three texts.Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. 第1题 I. Q. stands for "Intelligence Quotient" which is measure of a person's intelligence found by means of an intelligence test. Before marks gained in such a test can be useful as information about a person, they must be compared with some standard, or norm. It is not enough simply to know that a boy of thirteen has scored, say, ninety marks m a particular test. To know whether he is clever, average, or dull, his marks must be compared with the average achieved by boys of thirteen in that test. In 1906 the psychologist, Alfred Binet, devised the standard in relation to which intelligence has since been assessed. Binet was asked to find a method of selecting all children in the schools of Paris who should be taken out of ordinary classes and put in special classes for defectives. The problem brought home to him the need for a standard of intelligence, and he hit upon the very simple concept of" mental age". First, he invented a variety of tests and put large numbers of children of different ages through them. He then found at what age each test was passed by the average child. Binet arranged the various tests in order of difficulty, and used them as a scale by which he could measure every individual. If, for example, a boy aged twelve could only do tests that were passed by the average boy of nine, Binet held that he was three years below average, and that he had a mental age of nine. The concept of mental age provided Binet, and through him, other psychologists with the required standard. It enabled him to state scores in intelligence tests m terms of norm. At first, it was usual to express the result of a test by the difference between the" mental" and the" chronological" age. Then the boy in the example given would be" three years retarded". Soon, however, the" mental ratio" was introduced; that is to say, the ratio of the mental age to the chronological age. Thus a boy of twelve with mental age of nine has a mental ratio of 0.75. The mental age was replaced by the intelligence quotient or" I. Q". Clearly, since the mental age of the average child is equal to the chronological age, the average I. Q. is 100. To judge a child's standard, his marks in a test must be compared with marks gained by ______. A others of the same age
