Everything except the weather

My old friend, Harrison, had lived in the Mediterranean

for many years before he returned to England. He had

often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to

settle down in the country. He had no sooner returned

than he bought a fine house and went to live there.

Almost immediately he began to complain about the

weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained

continually and it was often bitterly cold. After so many

years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock. He acted as if

he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was

more than he could bear. He had hardly had time to

settle down when he sold the house and left the country.

The dream he had had for so many years ended there.

Part 3 Grammar

He had finished the task by last weekend.

He had left by the time I arrived.

When I woke up,it had stopped raining.

He told me that he had written a new book.

此时多与already, yet, still, just, before, never 等时间副词及by,before, until 等引导的短语或从句连用。如:He said that he had learned some English before.

Peter had collected more than 300 Chinese stamps by the time he was ten.

Tom was disappointed that most of the guests had left when he arrived at the party.

By the end of last year,he had worked in the factory for twenty years.

Exercise 1

1. When he arrived at the bus stop, the bus ________ for 20 minutes.

A. has left

B. had left

C. had been away

2. I ______ the League for 5 years so far.

A. joined

C. have been in

4. Mary and Rose _______friends since they met in 2000.

A. have made

B. have been

C. made

5. You mustn't ________ until he comes back.

A. be away

B. leave

C. be left

no sooner…than与hardly…when

no sooner / hardly+过去完成时+than / when+一般过去时

He had no sooner returned than he bought a house and went to live there.

He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country.

He had hardly got into the bus when it began moving.

就”,句型a 中的hardly 也可换成scarcely,barely;其中的when 也可换成before。

但是,千万不要将句型a 中的when 与句型b 中的than 弄混。

Exercise 2

1. I had hardly closed my eyes __the telephone rang.

A. when

C. than

Anger is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite video game and then breaks it, you can get really angry.

Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.

In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s important for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting others or yourself.

When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It’s helpful to talk about your anger with

an adult, such as a parent, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away. Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: talk to a good friend; count from 1 to 100; give someone a hug; go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.

Remember that how you act when you are angry can make everything better or worse. Don’t let your anger control you.

There was a man who had a little boy that he loved very much. Every day after work the man would come home and play with the little boy. He would always spend all of his spare time playing with the little boy.

One day, while the man was at work, he realized that he had extra work to do for the evening, and that he wou ldn’t be able to play with his little boy. But, he wanted to be able to give the boy something to keep him busy. So, looking around his office, he saw a magazine with a large map of the world on the cover. He got an idea. He removed the map, and then patiently tore it up into small pieces. Then he put all the pieces in his coat pocket.

When he got home, the little boy came running to him and was ready to play. The man explained that he had extra work to do and couldn’t play with him, but he led the little boy into the dining room. He took out all the pieces of the map and spread them on the table. He explained that it was a map of the world, and that by the time he put it back together, his extra work would be finished and they could both play. Surely this would keep the child busy for hours, he thought.

About half an hour later the boy came to the man and said, “Okay, it’s finished. Can we play now?”

The man was surprised, saying, “That’s impossible. Let’s go and see.” And sure enough, there was the picture of the world; all put together, every piece in its place.

The man said, “That's amazing! How did you do that?” The boy said, “It was simple. On the back of the page was a picture of a man. When I put the man together, the whole world fell into place.”

My aunt Edith, working as a secretary, was a single mother. Doctors discovered that she got a very serious heart disease when she was 50.

1 She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about

a well-known heart surgeon(外科医生), Dr. Michael DeBakey, in Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said Dr. DeBakey’s fees(诊疗费) were very high. 2 But could Dr. Michael tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?

So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to be alive. She had three children, and they would be on their own in three or four more years. 3 There wasn’t a word of self-pity—only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.

A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in. She stood in the hall and read aloud: “Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation. Signed—Michael DeBakey.”

That was seven years ago. 4 Her three children are happily married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people I know—all because of an open heart surgeon who knew how to honor his profession, and how to open his own heart.

A. Since then, Aunt Edith has been around the world.

B. Aunt Edith couldn’t poss ibly pay them.

C. Aunt Edith didn’t give up.

D. Aunt Edith decided to ask him to save her.

E. She had dreamt of traveling and seeing the world since she was a little girl.
