Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?

The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils (灾祸).

(82) People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions (反应) toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.

Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites (食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye.

Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So, if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help.

Passage Three - Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. (83) But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So, the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be demonstrated by the

case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was brought up in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark’s I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

13. According to the passage, the average I.Q. is _____.

A.85

B.100

C.110 Dd.125

A. individual with identical brains seldom test at same level

B. an individual’s intelligence is determined only by his environment

C. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence

D. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

15. This passage suggests that an individual ‘s I.Q.______.

A. can be predicted at birth

B. stays the same throughout his life

C. can be increased by education

Passage Four - Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

Unions are organizations of workers that bargain with employers for economic and job benefits. They exist to create political and economic power against private management and the government to achieve their goals.

(84) These goals are primarily higher wages, better working conditions, and job security. The arrangements made to achieve these goals are usually complex in their social and psychological detail.

Union movements occurred in the latter years of the 1700s in the US. Carpenters, printers, and shoemakers formed organizations as early as 1791 in Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. These arose largely over economic conflicts between workers and employers when rapid changes in a young developing country began to break down the familiar methods of production and the close ties between worker and employer.

A long, hard drive for legalization of union followed. Unions fought with companies and unsympathetic courts for legitimacy and status. Unions were seen as a threat to free enterprise and private property, and therefore to political and economic stability. They were also considered radical, and companies resisted them vigorously. Violence was frequent on both sides. The government at times moved in state police to suppress the fiercer conflicts. (85) Union workers themselves often punish other workers who did not support their policies.

Unions in the US have always maintained a practical direction. They have not adopted radical ideologies or unrealistic goals. A major force in union organizing in the early part of the century, Samuel Gompers, took a practical approach. He was for “bread and butter unionism” or “pure and simple unionism.”

He was interested in immediate, practical gains ---- higher wages and shorter hours. He sided with no political party, only with politicians who could help.

Sports and Health

A healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind. As is known to us, to have a sound mind, we must first have a sound body. This is of vital importance. Only keeping ourselves healthy and strong can we feel energetic and vigorous in studying and working and live a happy life.

To keep ourselves fit, physical exercise is the best way. In taking part in out-door sports, we are closer to nature and can take in fresh air. The beauty of nature will keep us clear-headed, which is essential to our health.

Besides, sports stimulate the circulation of blood and help to excrete the wastes in the body. Sports can also work up our appetite and activate our digestion. As a result, we can become strong-bodied.

I always take an active part in physical exercise and enjoy good health. I seldom get sick but feel vigorous even if I work a whole day long. I shall keep up doing physical exercise so as to live longer and do more for the country.

The overuse of or over-reliance on cell phones may cause problems to people’s emotional health. To begin with, the overuse of mobile phones will invade people’s private time that should have been spent on relaxation. For instance, the use of mobile phones enables your boss to find you whenever and wherever you are, even when you are enjoying a dinner at home. Secondly, the frequent sending and receiving of short messages may keep a person continually alert to any sound similar to that of a cell phone. According to psychologists, being constantly sensitive to some sounds will make people feel under pressure. Do you want to stay away from the harm of overusing mobile phones? Many even tend to force their ideas of jobs on their children. However, many children believe they should be left free to choose their own careers. Firstly, parents and children may not share the same interests. Secondly, children grow up in an age different from their parents’. Therefore they should be allowed to choose for themselves. In my opinion, mutual understanding is important. On one hand, parents’ view reflects their concern for children. On the other, it is the children who will be doing the job. Therefore, it is wise for parents to give them this freedom while children should consult their parents when necessary. Without certain certificates showing their English ability, it may be hard even to find a job, even though most jobs have nothing to do with English. For some, it is a waste of time and resources for so many people to learn English. On the other hand, it is believed that grasping a foreign language means obtaining a useful skill, which could make a person be able to fulfill more jobs and demands in the society. To me, the most time-consuming task for students in China is learning English. They have to spend a lot of precious time reading, memorizing words, and doing exercises. To them, the only meaning in English learning is to deal with tests. Therefore, it is not necessary for all the people to learn English. (139 words)

专升本英语作文(各种范文)

英语作文Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 miniutes to write a composition on the title:make our city greener, your composition should be based on the following outline: 1:城市绿色的状况2:绿化的好处(如:清洁空气,美化城市,改善气候......)3:怎样才能实现绿化范文:Recent efforts toward the greening of our cities have achieved much, although the results are still far from satisfactory. In recent years many trees have been planted in the cities and much care has been taken of the planted trees. In spite of all this, the greening process is relatively slow compared with cities in many other countries. For example, the green space available on average to each Shanghai citizen is only 0.4 Mu while every Londoner has more than 20 Mu. We can benefit much from making our cities greener by planting trees. First, trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen which is essential to the health of human beings. Second, trees and other greenery make our cities more beautiful. Third, trees can also improve the climate of the cities. Since we can get so much from making our cities greener, we should spare no effort to do that. We should plant more trees and take better care of them. We also should not cut down the trees. In a word, we should do everything to add to the greening of our cities. Directions: For this part, you are allowed30 minutes to write a composition based on, the following two questions: 1.你在英语学习中有哪些困难? 2.你是如何克服这些困难的? Y our composition should be no less than 100 words. Write this composition on the Answer Sheet. Remember to write it clearly. 范文:To a Chinese, the task of learning English well is not easy. So I, like many other English learners, have met with difficulties in learning English during the past seven years. But I managed to overcome them and made much progress. The spelling and meaning of words can be said to be the first difficulty I met as a beginner. But I found our my own way to deal with them. As to spelling, I never copied a new work again and again to remember it, but tried to find its relevance to the sound. In fact, as long as I can read the word out, I can write it out. As to the meaning, I rarely recite its Chinese translation but often put the word into the sentence to learn its meaning. Moreover, if you use a word quite often, its spelling and meaning will be no problem. After all, we are learning English in order to use it. Grammar and idioms may be another difficulty. But I have also got over it. I have not read lots of grammar books. But I spent much time reading the articles written by native speakers or specialists in English. By doing so, I came to gain “a sense of English language”. I began to gain a feel for which sentences are “good English” and which are not. Finally, I want to say that overcoming all these difficulties requires perseverance. In the past seven years I spent at least an hour on English each day. I believe this is an important reason why I am able to make progress in learning English. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Positive and Negative Aspects of Sport. Y ou should write no less than 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. 运动的积极因素;2. 运动的消极因素; 3. 你的体会范文:Sports benefit us in many respects. When taking part in sports, we get the chance to train almost all parts of our body. There is no doubt that properly balanced physical activities keep us physically fit. Furthermore, sports can enrich our life and maintain our psychological health. Through participation, everyone can learn that on the playing field he not only competes for himself but also for his team. Sports teach us about consideration, cooperation
